Yep, I've said it before, GM has lost their way, and seems Ram picked up right where they left off, lol. Nice rig dude, just one quick tip though, either run longer license plate bolts in the front or run no cover/frame, the stock bolts are super short and just thread into the plastic bracket. Yes I have seen at least one license plate get ripped off by a carwarsh.

Agree about GM, sad really.

Nice option lost though, keyless go is one of my favourite things, my wife absolutely loves that option on her Cherokee.

Another small thing you should know about, 3rd brake lights often let water by, the factory foam is pathetic. Slightly thicker foam should cure it, I've seen many be sealed with silicone after leaking......
Other than that, those are great trucks.

It seems the GM trucks have a very cheap feel since the late '00s, lotsa plastic and cheap materials, the older ones had really nice interiors and seemed to ride much better. Regardless, I'm sure you'll be happy with the Ram, we sell tons of them.

That happened on my '04 Lariat crew...the high mount brake light seal leaked and screwed up the security module behind the rear passenger seat. Ford dealer had my truck for a week with the interior torn out of it. They found a couple wonky door sensors and a bad security module. Thing was the new module they ordered was bad outta the box. Cost them over $5k in tech hours to figure it out...cost me ~ $500 plus they gave me a rental pickup and my truck was out of warranty.

Didn't even notice that.
I don't care for the "large shifter", but I do like the idea of a mechanical shift linkage.

No worse than the old pushbutton gear selectors.

Lol, I've seen a few of those, very weird. Although the rotary shifter is very common, Ford uses it I'm sure of that, and Ford also uses push-buttons on the console I'm quite sure. Sadly I doubt any "mechanical linkage" is mostly gone now, most are electronic weather there is a traditional shifter or not.

We had one at work for a couple of days, the dial a gear messed with me every time I drove it. Other than that I enjoyed it, and uconnect is very user friendly. And I'm sure that after a week or so I'd be used to the different shifter, no different than getting used to different positions for lights or wipers.

Only a few hundred km's under my belt but feeling more familiar with each drive. Except for what I feel is a substantial blind spot in the drivers side mirror, nothing about it to fault as of yet, new convex are ordered. Engine makes big jam, trans is always in the right gear, truck drives n feels terrific.

So big question(s)....when is the levelling kit going on and when does exhaust get swapped?

ZR
07-24-2017, 06:12 PM
Rake is just enough I like as is. Long term review of my former Bilstein leveling struts was not favorable, did start off good though.
No loud exhaust on the daily driver, factory duals will work just fine.

Intmdtr
07-24-2017, 06:56 PM
did you get the adjustable suspension in this truck?

ZR
07-24-2017, 07:01 PM
Specifically bought one without air ride.
Will be adding bags to the rear.

Intmdtr
07-24-2017, 07:12 PM
Whats your take on the air ride? several on my list have the air ride. wondering if it will have any effect on adding the leveling kit....interference etc?

ZR
07-24-2017, 07:16 PM
For me it came down to. . . . . .

-didn't think I wanted the complication of 4 corner air ride, especially once it got older
-drove one of each, conventional suspension had the feel I'm looking for.
-if additional capacity is needed out back, air bags for these trucks are under $200 and very easy to install (goes inside rear coil springs).

ZR
07-24-2017, 07:18 PM
Once my Bilsteins got some miles on them, ride degraded an appreciable amount. I don't like the idea of spacers which can allow the wheel enough travel to potentially bind / break a ball joint.
If the rake bothered me enough, would look to lower the rear vs raise front, would never go leveling kit again.
Rake on this truck, just enough that I really like how it looks.

Intmdtr
07-24-2017, 07:28 PM
right on. guess when I pull the trigger it will come down to who has the truck I want and if they want to sell it bad enough....meaning working with me on the price.

first purchase may be some 305/55-20's for it. next might be exhaust, or tint. heard one on youtube with muffler delete and didn't sound to bad, but a little raspy higher in the rpm's.

Ponyryd
07-24-2017, 09:35 PM
^We have a customer with a muffler delete, truck is also dropped and sounds/looks awesome. The main problem is when it goes into Mds mode it will be unbearable.......apparently the only exhaust to give good sound and still absorb the Mds noise is a made company called Solo, actually I believe they're in T.O., and they'll do the install for free if you buy the system.

All true.

We've had a few issues with the air ride, a small amount though considering how many trucks are sold with it (a ton). But for me it all comes down to longevity, I've repaired and often eliminated many Ford air ride systems, and I know of several Mercedes cars that are off the road due to the cost of replacing air springs. Great system if you want a real pillowy ride (although really the Ram trucks ride great with coils) and are planning to own for only a few years, but for a keeper you'd be better with coils.

The thing with trucks are the "must need" accessories that go along with an already expensive purchase.

It does add up pretty fast.
Lovin the new ride so cost is what it is.
This truck reminds me of how much I liked my former '03 Sierra SLT, extremely comfortable.

There are 17" alloys available, most low-line trucks come with them. If it was me I'd list those 20s for trade on some 17s, save some coin.

Why not use the existing rims for winter and use the new blingy rims for summer? Are the new ones cast or the same as what you have?

I really like the stock Laramie wheels, will keep em outta the snow so they'll stay nice. Do too much driving in shitty conditions n some off the beaten path when sledding, don't want to regret not running full on snow tires.

I've run these on a couple of other trucks n came away nothing but impressed. Will likely look to Defender LTX for summer tires next spring.

Oil test Hemi style

Approx 1200kms on fresh oil and filter change running factory 5w20, oil looked like it had never been changed.
Approx 1500kms on fresh oil and filter with 10w30 full syn, oil looks like it was poured in yesterday.
Absolute bs the cylinder deactivation won't work properly on heavier oil. It actually goes into deactivation easier vs on 5w plus fuel economy numbers speak for themselves.

Wish I could get rid of the cylinder deactivation without a tuner. I hate it and I feel it does nothing for gas mileage.

Is it normal for the exhaust to have a bit of a gurgle sound when driving with no load applied and then a light press of the pedal it cleans up?

Oddly, more noticeable in some vs others but yes / my GM did the same. In my current ride, hard pressed to tell when it's in 4cyl mode. My brother says it's terrible in his 6 speed Grand Cherokee but barely noticeable in his 8spd Ram. I suspect how much you notice is more of a 6 vs 8 spd kinda deal.

Switch from 5w20 to 10w30 syn.

Results continue to impress, at 4200kms, oil is just starting to change color, considerable difference vs just over 1000kms and jet black with 5w20 in the pan. Opposite to what I was expecting, cylinder deactivation comes in easier / earlier and stays in a hair longer when you accelerate. The 10.3ltr/100 going to the track was also on 10w30 so no mileage did not drop off (at least in mine) as so many claim with heavier oil.
I saw exact same results in my former 5.3 GM plus took it from chugging a ltr of oil every 22-2500kms to using zero in between it's 5000km oil changes.
