View Full Version : Tell me about Seafoam...

So I seem to have a loud ticking from my Engine, and from the multiple mechanics that I know, they have told me top end, somehow related to the lifters. According to my Uncle, which is kind of a mechanic, if I put seafoam into my oil and fuel it might loosen up the lifter, and that I do not need to change my oil after the case. As far as I know, you suppose to run it through your fuel and oil, and once your done the single tank, your suppose to change the oil. Can someone inform me if I am correct or have I read the info wrong?

What viscosity of oil are you using?

You can add sea foam to your oil, but I wouldn't drive around with it in there. I have added it to my old oil and let it idle for about 20 minutes, did a complete drain and flush, then put in new oil. I have also added it to my gas and and sucked it in through a vacuum line in my intake too.

SeaFoam, one of the very few products of it's kind that actually works as advertised.

Not sure, oil was changed before I bought the car.

That is what I am hearing, just wanted to make sure before I put anything in my engine that shouldn't be there.

Can you explain a little further on this? Will it actually work for what I need it to?

Don't think mine counts since it's an 05.

Is the noise constant or come and go?

had a ticking lifter on my 302, used seafoam in the crankcase as directed. Seemed to do the trick.

Nothing to lose except a few bux.

I also use it occasionally thru the intake on my 3.0L to avoid the dreaded Vulcan carbon buildup ping.

Maybe this one is applicable. Provides a good diagnostic method.

Comes and goes at random. Sometimes when I just start up, sometimes after the car has been warm for a very hours.

According to the issue part, mine isn't related. I will read it again when I get to my computer, since I am currently on my phone.

If it was mine, would dump a full can of SeaFoam into the oil (engine hot) and allow it to idle only for about 20 minutes. Dump oil, change filter and fill with 10w30 full synthetic and drive.

How does this work if I wanted to do it.

Get home after commute (hot engine) open oil fill cap and dump in a can of seafoam.

Turn engine back on and idle for a 20 min smoke show?

Will The extra volume of the can of seafoam be dangerous in the crankcase?

Afterward change oil and filter and hammer down? :)

I put a can of seafoam in the gas tank with every oil change

All I can tell you is the results I've seen.
Yes add can to the oil with engine up to full temp, allow to idle then change oil and filter immediately, do not drive.
Also suggest 10w30 full syn.

Would I really need to put in 10w30? I was told I could run 5w30 instead of 5w20, but I was told not to do anything more then that. I understand you have also been in the business for a long time, and have help multiple forum members, and you are recommend by everyone, so I do trust you.

Good to know, I think I will start doing this as well.

In my experience,
-reduced or eliminated cold start blue smoke (somewhat common with the 3V)
-oil stays cleaner longer
-reduced or eliminated oil consumption
-reduced or eliminated engine noises both hot and at cold start
Pretty much every 2V-3V and 4V customers I have are running 10w30 full syn including my own. I know some will disagree and thats cool, just posting what I'm seeing.

Okay, so the 10w30 will not damage my engine in anyway? I took lowest mechanics last year, so I don't know much but I know a little. From what you are saying, and from what Stephen has said, I think I will try it out, cannot really harm anything as far as I know.

Yes, I wanna keep it for a long time. Specially now that it won't be on daily duty anymore. As of next week it's officially a garage ornament :)

I would also like to do this treatment on Michaela's FJ cruiser. It needs some lovin too.

Ray you won't get smoke show when you dump into crankcase...you only get smoke show when you send it through your intake.

Your Mustang should not need an oil flush. Just dump a can in full tank of gas at every oil change and you're good to go.

With x regular oil changes from the get go, should never need it.
Odd can in the fuel tank = money well spent.

Sweet. I've been pretty religious with my oil changes. Every 5000ish. Full synthetic 5W50 Mobil1.

Some people found that the new 5.0 consumes oil. I haven't lost a drop yet and it's well past it's break in period. I guess it's all in the maintenance.

They could also be running 5W20. Pretty sure that's what non track pack cars call for. That's a pretty light oil. I wouldn't trust it.

My Uncle is always forgetting the name of Sea foam, he has called it Sea Breeze a few times.

"We will put some of that Sea Breeze into your engine and fix it right up..."
First time he said it I gave him the funniest look.

I also run 10W30 as per ZR

I just switched to 10W30. The engine sounds much nicer now. I dyno'd my car last year at steeda and pulled 267hp using 5w20. This year at DaSilva's I pulled 280 and the only change that I had made was the oil. The true test will be during the winter when I have to start the car in minus 20 weather. My engine hates the cold. Hopefully 10w30 makes it happy.

Well yes but historically dasilva's has produced lower numbers. Other factors are the weather and air temperatures, humidity, etc ,etc. Just meant that I didn't change anything else in the car.
