Vegas Vacationing: tips, tricks do's and don'ts?

So throwing this out there to get feedback from Vegas visitors. I sorta have plans on what I'm doing, but I'd love suggestions for things to check out. Also what to watch for (I might spend $20 on gambling to give you an idea of my intention) and where to get good deals on rentals/accommodation/fun stuff. I'm meeting someone from there that can tour guide me a bit.

Kinda thinkin about getting a rental car and driving over to LA for the hell of it. And yes I can drive for 4 hours straight lol.

I think this will be a good thread for others to check out as well.

I was able to rent a car right from the airport for $60 for the week unlimited Km's. Are planning on staying at the strip? If you can try and take in a show, there pretty good. Not sure if your into clubbing but Vegas has some of the biggest DJ's ....... I was going to say "spinning records" but I think I'm correct to say "wearing headphones around neck with hands in the air". Cover is expensive, prepare for nothing less then $40.00, worth the experience IMO. If you are staying on the strip talk to a manager at the hotel and let them know it's your first time in Vegas, they'll often bump you up to a better room. Shooting guns is tons of fun, if I went back I'd probably head over to the pawn shop to see it in person. If you are driving L.A and the Grand Canyon are both decent. Nothing is cheap in Vegas unfortunately, if your not gambling, but desire some drinks, tip one the hostesses a $1 and she'll be happy to oblige. Be alert to the good looking chick that starts chatting with you in the hotel lobby, she will expect to get paid to do the wild thing! Other then that have a great time!

Hem, thanks! I'm not much of a clubber. I'm sure the friend I'm going to see might know of some good stuff to do in the area. I definitely want to check out the dam and such. Sixty bucks for the entire week unlimited miles? Damn. Everywhere I looked it was at least 140 for 5 days. Maybe in person deals aee where it's at.

So is it worth it to blast over to LA? Im thinking of bringing some change with me to make life easier. Maybe if I get a flight+hotel package I can set aside coin for play time...

I think I'll steer clear of the hookers and blow. Though very tempting...

In Vegas -
There are many amusement type rides all along the strip.
You can take a bus or the tram from one end of the strip to the other. You can also walk it.
The Stratosphere is sort of at one end, the North end of the strip. The rides at the Stratosphere are on the top of the tower so the extra height is a bonus thrill.

If you have a motorcycle license you can rent a motorcycle. They are a little pricey.

You've already got Hover Dam on your list and the Grand Canyon. You can take adventure tours of the canyon (jeep, helicopter, boat)

If you make it there, the Petersen Museum is well worth the visit.

Driving Directions To Hoover Dam from Las Vegas -- About 30 miles/45 minutes


Take US Highway 93 South and continue about 20 miles to Boulder City
In Boulder City, take a left at the second stoplight in town (there are only 2 of them)
Continue on US 93 for about 5 miles (just past the Hacienda Hotel) to the turn-off to Nevada State Route 172 - the Hoover Dam Access Road
Take NV SR 172 for about 2 miles to the Dam on the Nevada/Arizona border

I like this guy. Pretty much my plan lol. Coastal highway/mountain driving is what I'm hoping to do when around LA. I'll visit casinos in Vegas just to look inside. Don't need to end up in the back room for losing too much...

If you want to see the pawn shop from TV, go during the day. It is in the sketchy end of town, where pawn shops are, and the cabbie I spoke to said he wouldn't wait for us or come back and get us if we were there after dark.

Jib, couple of things to take into consideration, American money is running about + .17 cents per CDN buck, if you use credit cards, (which you will have to) it is exchange rate( that day) + 2.5 % (credit card cut), rental cars , rooms etc all need CC to book, your car rental will put a hold for the whole amount on your CC so if your CC only has a small limit or your spending $$$ on other stuff, air fare etc, be care full not to ding your limit or you'll pay large or be denied ! And I have never seen a $60 car , airport fee alone are more than that, (it may happen) but I spend a month a year in and around Vegas for the past 10 years, and I've never seen it ! Remember Hertz , owns Thrifty and Dolllar, as well as a bunch of smaller company's. Get there , keep your wits about you and it will come naturally ! & BTW decent tickets to Donny & Marie are $300 + LOL !
Some decent deal here, but you have to make sure the dates ect work, deals happen when you book far enough in advance !!

I flew to LA and stayed in Santa Monica for a night on a nice beach front hotel (Loews hotel). Rented a vert Mustang drove through the mountains (absolutely beautiful) to LV and stayed 2 nights, flew home from LV. LV is fun, rent some exotic cars (there is a track there), gamble a bit, nightlife , drinks etc then fly home. You get beach, vert, mountains, and get to see LV from a distance and up close. Lots of fun.

-exotic racing: at Las Vegas speed way, higher speeds, on a track with a driving instruction, not as much in seat time and more $
- world class driving (only done red rock tour) not as racecar like, driven in a group alone in the car, give you a few chances to open her up (had the gf doing 135+ mph) great tour around and really a cheap price. Fyi if you go, do the first tour of the day or the last, you get a bit more seat time taking the cars out to the desert.
I'd recommend both highly, but world class on a budget

Changes depending what you do, iirc the track was $550 ish, 2 car package ran an r8 and a gallardo. The red rock tour the girl friend grab on a groupon deal, think 280$ ran gallardo spyder, jag xk8 rs and the 458 italia

Jib, just for FYI , I hope your CC limit is enough to cover the "what your doing", "ie" the full price of the "rentals" go on as a hold, which reduces the amount that you can charge, the room, the car etc etc, even if your paying cash at the end, as soon as your limit is reached you have zero credit ! even though its only a hold ! there is also a possibility depending on car you rent it could be high, exotics can run $5000 up front + etc etc, just letting you know bud, have a great trip !

That's what I did when we drove to California. Picked up a phone for $20 and bought a card for $45 that gave us unlimited data and free calls to Canada. It was a really basic smartphone but worked good. It was way cheaper then the telus package offered.

Once you've paid for your flight etc here then pay if off before you go and reload the card so you have full room on it. Also, prepay your full car rental from here (Expedia, Travelocity, etc) and do the same (pay it off and reload) before you leave. Same for hotel.

I decided to check out vegas.com and they make a compelling case. Flight and hotel for an advertised 810 all in. I imagine other fees will pop up, like baggage. But it's through westjet and I don't have to leave my car at the airport (benefit of living 10 min down the road) Only setback is the lack of rental car. But the cash I'll save can be used to rent a car for one or two days, can do the exotic car cruise, and have money left over for food and funtimes...

Has anybody done a similar trip? How was it? I've flown with westjet before and they are excellent.

Given your credit card situation I would recommend booking and pre-paying for the rental before you go (rental sites, Expedia, Travelocity, Hotwire, etc) so they'll only have to put a hold on a certain dollar amount (this varies) of your credit card limit while you have the car (and for a few days afterwards usually). You'll need additional room on your card to continue using it while you're there...or you could buy a pre-paid USD credit card (one time use, non-reloadable - I think these are available here) before you go as backup.

We have been using this for a couple years now, its great, set it up online <$4 a day with tons of data etc switch sims at the border or when I land and you're golden. I always use nexus devices which are unlocked but for my dads rogers phones we found a site selling codes for $10 and an hour and its done

I kinda agree with Zex, except he didnt catch its a prepaid card, I think you will run into issues with a pre paid leaving deposits on cars rooms etc.
I would get a normal TD visa with a 5 grand limit or somthing to make sure

Ugh, went through sooo many different options it made my head spin.

Figured out the most plausible way (and saving me some money in the process) after spending hours looking into the finer details of things.

Getting a flight/hotel/car package through this last minute deals site that my Dad has a membership with. No weird hidden fees. Sure it won't be on the strip, but the price beats the hell out of what I was last looking at.

Plus I'll have a car to bomb around in. Gunna do the Muscle Car driving package ('13 gt500, C6 z06, Challenger [gag me with a spoon]). I'll save the exotics for next time.

Staying at a Super 8 by the Air Force Base from the 11 to 16. Got a car rented for the week. Gunna do the muscle car driving (Gt500, z06, Challenger SRT8) on my bday, and gunna partaaaaaay the rest of the week!

Got travel insurance, my passport, the phone coverage, some spending money and the urge to go. Customers gave me tips on what to bring and what to go see. Should be a blast!

IMO-Vegas is a hole you only visit once. You will have fun, lose a lot of money, get ripped off a bunch of times, and then never want to go back there again... like ever.

Take a bus tour out to the Hoover Dam. It's a one day excursion.

There's lots of "slots" in Vegas, and they'll all take your money! ;P

Maybe so. I haven't been there since 2001. I take it you've never been there?

Been at least once a year for biz since 1990. That makes it 25 x and counting. It is better than before and certainly more family oriented. I like Fremont street > old Town a lot; couldn't care less about the strip or the gambling. The mall at Ceasars is epic no matter what. Shelby Museum is very worthwhile.
Food is ok, the drive thru the desert to San Diego or LA is pretty cool too.

I just remember Downtown being downright deadly. I've heard it has since cleaned up, especially south by the Spaghetti Bowl. Sure, you will still get mugged, and stabbed to death, but only at night now. MUCH BETTER!!!!!!

I have a rental car so I'll bomb around in that, head over to the hoover dam and such. Maybe catch a bus that travels to the strip so I can get hammered and not have to worry about driving. Got lots of stuff to do. Gotta find a souvenir shop for some keychains and trinkets to bring back too.

Still gotta make a list on paper and figure out where all this stuff is so I can knock it out. Been so busy with work and hashing out details I haven't really had time to review all the things to do in great detail and write them down.

Ride the Deuce on the strip. Was $5 for each 24 hours when I was there about 5 years ago.

Bringing this back to the top. The family and I were in Vegas last weekend during the ice storm. We got in early Sunday morning and left on Tuesday. Stayed at the Tropicana. Saw two shows, Blue Man Group, and one of the many Cirque du Soleil. On Monday we rented a car to do some site seeing. Started off the morning going to Sonic for breakfast, then we dropped my wife off at an outlet mall and Celeste and I went exploring. Went to Shelby American and took the guided tour (conducted by Jim King one of the founders of the GHMA). After that is was off to Counts Kustoms to look at the cars (as we were walking to the main entrance I looked to my right to see Ryan(the painter on the show),standing in the doorway of the body shop doing a polish job on a bumper cover). It was cool to see many of the rides from the TV show in person. After we left the Count's we drove two minutes down the street to the Welderup guys. Again very cool to see their creations in person. (Didn't see any of them as they were in the adjoining shop working on next seasons show). Our last stop was at the Venetian to get some goodies from the Cake Boss. We also walked through several of the big name hotels. Some of them, like the MGM Grand, make the Vaughan Mills mall look small. The prices for food and drink were rather high, but we found a little restaurant a five minute walk from our hotel where we could eat for a reasonable price (especially after 4:00 when many things were half price). All in all it was a fun trip, and I'd go back to do some day trips like the Hoover Dam.
