Seeing as I was almost taken out by a late red light runner for the second time this week I'm looking into front and rear on board cameras for Erin and me. Hopefully I can report some of these Hillbilly Jackwagons. Do anyone have any insight on which brand is best?
Thanks
Gary

My personal experience is I love the Blackvue, but it's just a forward facing dashcam. I suppose you could get two.
It has already saved me one insurance claim.

I'll upload some vids this weekend if I get a chance.
Really like the ease of use. I suggest the wifi one only because you can access the menu quickly.
Otherwise you need to put the micro sd into a cpu.

Can I just confirm that this cam runs continuously (overwriting once card is full).

Is that what this means:

Video saving time, min Continuous
Cycling saving Support
Recording Automatically After the Power Up Support
Cycled recording (overwrite) Support

Amazon Review:

It records over itself in a loop when it runs out of memory on the memory card, so you don't have to keep resetting it (unless you touch it and press those pesky buttons). Overall it's not bad.

While talking to Reon at the DaSilva booth I noticed a camera on the counter. Not a dash cam per se, but more of an action cam, like a Go-pro. It's called the WASPcam. A very good price point and according to their website, WASPcam is Canadian. It might be worth a look.

Plus the Blackvue does intervals of 1,2 or 3 min recordings so its easier to find what you need.
Also has event recording so when your parked if it detects movement or if your car gets hit it will start recording.

Not4you
03-23-2014, 10:27 AM
yeah, they are different animals. Blackvue is a true dashcam where the Wasp and GoPro and others are more just for shooting specific videos. I was looking at the Wasp options at the show too but found that the less expensive ones did not adjust to light changes (like the gen 1 GoPro's) so really not that good for most applications where you drive in and out of shadows.

It is a Canadian company distributing here but have found the unit branded under different names on the net. Tiger had a HP version for a bit.

+1 on blackvue.

So small that even your mechanic wouldn't notice it when he does a road test when you're not around. Car is a C300, with 7-speed auto.

Note: Went in for a warranty work and issues with squeaky accelerator during stop and go rush hour traffic. As well as noisy brakes when cold or when backing out of driveway. Cam does warn you in a clear audio voice when it's recording and when it turns off.

Note that to utilize dashcams with the parking mode feature such as on the blackvue / finevue, you will either have to hardwire to the car's battery or buy a power kit like Blackvue's Power Magic ($50). The power kit provides a constant power supply as well as a timer when the car key is removed.

The power cord was long enough to route it up into the headliner (unit plugs in from the top so it's nice and clean), down the pass side a-pillar, in thru the side of the dash via a pop panel, and then out from under right into a closeable compartment that has a power point plug. Worked out very well.

The 4 Sight Dash Cam 2 also has an external GPS function to record speed and location, adjustable G-sensor that will pick up a substantial shock and will lock and save that section of recording. It also has an Emergency event button that when pressed, will lock and save that section (60 sec before and after) of the recording. When the card becomes full and it reloops, these sections of video will not be recorded over.

The left lens records the big picture. The right lens is zoomed in to get the details (plate number, etc). But Ive chosen to flip it backwards so it will record out the back window to see what's coming. Both recordings are split screened in playback.

No, I have not used it at the track. It is mounted in my truck and the power cord is not removable. I fabbed up a second power chord, but have misplaced it in the move. The one year that I did have it at Mosport ...the memory card corrupted.

Which brings up a good point about the Blackvue. I don't know if they have resolved it, but there is a minor issue with the memory card corrupting. The solution is to simply re-format the card occasionally (once a month or so?). Since the initial incident, I have been re-formating the card and have not had any problems.

These pics are unedited other than for size - so you can see that the unit blends in pretty good with the truck interior. I have it so it fits in right nice under the rear view (but you could put it up higher on either side of the rvm, if you wanted to.

I don't really mind the cable. Now to save up some footage and post an idiot reel. Thanks Armen for getting me to look at this one your posts and video were the game changer.

If you're going to be switching it between vehicles, you might want to see if you can get an extra power cord from the company that makes them... http://www.getdashcam.com/support.php

That way you can try and hide the cord away as I did without having to worry about removing it every time you wanna swap the camera to your other ride.

(or just maybe one locally that will be compatible with the Dash Cam unit.

I've had my DashCam2 now for a couple weeks and I love it. It's easy to detach if I don't want to leave it in the truck and it's working great. And it was $180.

If you guys are still interested in a group buy for blackvue or finevue-brand dash cams, I would suggest contacting the Canadian distributor, Alex @ blackboxmycar.com. http://www.blackboxmycar.com/ He's located in Vancouver.

From what i read from another car forum, they managed to get a group buy going 2 years ago on earlier dash cam models. Example 2 years ago was:

Blackuve DR400G Blackvue DR380 Finevu CR200HD Finevu CR300HD
MSRP $250+tax $219+tax $240+tax $320+tax

15~30 $245 $205 $210 $295
31~ $230 $190 $190 $280

**Above GB pricing is included with HST.

Power Kit $50
Power Magic Pro by Blackvue $60

Shipping is $15 for anywhere in CANADA/USA through Canada Post.

Alternatively, there are supposedly ok dash cams (yes, made in China) available in Pacific Mall.

Hers's another potential option.

http://mobius-actioncam.com/

http://mobius-actioncam.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/mobius-left.png
The Mobius ActionCam is one of the most sophisticated mini cameras around. Measuring 1 3/8″ x 2 1/2″ x 3/4″ inches and weighing only 1.4 ounces, this camera can easily fit in any pocket, but press record and you will capture stunning 1080 HD video quality normally only found on devices 5 times the size.

Mine is an older one that came in silver. The new ones are black and even less visible. It comes with a really long power cord, I've got mine run inside the windshield molding, around and down behind the dash, and the connector pops out right near my power outlet. When I start the truck I just plug the connector in and it powers up.

You can wire it into something with constant power, or choose something with ignition.
If you buy the Power Magic you can set the dip switches to a set time of power. Mines set to 8 hrs.
It will go to sleep until it detects movement or any kind of impact in that 8 hour period.

how did you end up running the rear wiring?

I same thing i did with your headliner all the way back and worked perfect. Then through the hosing for the rear lights to hide for hatchback

other option is aim the camera up higher so it only catches the shaker, and none of the dash reflection.

wonder if there are polarizing filters you could apply? might cut down on the glare.

edit: LOL, apparently there is!

Nope the glass. It comes with a holder so you can take it out if you need.
Somebody finally noticed it the other night as there is a small light that flashes to tell you its recording lol

There are some limitations too though, Karageorgos cautions. Dashcams typically just point in one direction, and can sometimes get in the way of a driver’s sightlines. “It’s a question of ‘is it going to impede your view?’” he said.

Impede your view? The 407 transponder is more of an impedance than the dashcam. I can't even see mine while driving.

Not4you
07-13-2014, 12:51 PM
yep mine is completely hidden by the rear view mirror. IT is the impedance.

I have the front mounted one only, and other than the lousy microphone (well for track use it's lousy), it works well. I wish I had waited to get the unit above with the rear view camera.

They say 80 bucks in the article, but all the ones with decent reviews are over 200
it seems like if you go under that, then you're getting some Chinese knock-off that doesn't record with any decent quality or gives other issues.

Are there any low-cost HD cameras that work well?

The mini 0806 that I have has very good quality, features, discrete and while it is made in china so is my wife's iPhone.
It's little over $100 (I think it was around $130). I got the hard wire kit from Blackvue.

The key item I like on the mini 0806 is the amount of storage. I keep it running 24/7 and it's the only one that supports up to 256GB (2 x 128GB). I'm using it with 2 x 64GB.

RedSN

I guess if you're leaving it on all the time you might need that much memory, but really how much to do need for just driving around? A 16GB micro SD gives me 4 1/2 hrs of full HD 32 fps recording. If an event occurs that I want to save, I transfer it to my computer. Even at the track if I'm using it to record laps, that's 180 laps even at my speed LOL.

geokots
05-19-2015, 01:28 PM
I don't use it just for driving around.
I feel I need more than just when the car is on. 8-9 hours parked at the office, sometimes left outside overnight at home, 3 hours a day of driving. I'd rather just have it record all the time.

Yes great phone but stay away from Windows 10 for mobile. I've been running the technical preview since it was released. It will be great but right now it's too buggy.

Anyone comment on what they would or did get in the last few months, how much and what features?

Works great.
Picture is awesome and never has any issues. I did replace the memory card last year though.
