BTW - I still have my Mustang...I just have a hard on for the Z cars.

The motor is a 3 litre bored out to 3.1L, it is a twin turbo. The motor was assembled by Jack Roush Racing in Livonia Michigan (yes they build more than just Ford motors) It is rated for 32lbs of boost. Currently running a "mild" 15lbs, does have another setting of around 22lbs - haven't tried that yet. Full boogie stereo and video system in the trunk (no room for anything else).

I broke one of the subs (foam) last Friday (expensive lesson!!). Couldn't get the same vintage so I just bought a pair of JL 10W7 anniversary subs. Swapping them out this weekend...got to get ready for the judged show on Wednesday!

Well made it to DaSilva's last Friday to dyno the 300ZX.....very disappointed. The car pulled 316 hp and 317 lb ft. The biggest issue it was running SO rich we aborted the second pull. DaSilva's equipment doesn't display anything less than 10 on the air/fuel. The feeling is its likely running around 9. So now I have to find someone who can tune using the current APEXI controllers or with over to a more modern system (Haltech oe AEM). It has potential of pulling close to 400 if the air/fuel was proper.

So the rest of Friday was uneventful until about 1pm. I attended the 2016 Zcon autocross event at the Brampton Powered Centre on Kennedy Road. It wasn't participating in the event so I parked in an empty area. There was a pickup truck 40 feet to the right and nothing to the left. The car was nose to Kennedy. I was taking pictures of the cars as they negotiated there layout. Walking back to the car another member ran up to me to say my car had been hit. WTF!!! I immediately thought what asshole couldn't drive. BUT that wasn't the issue. A mini van going south on Kennedy lost a front wheel. That thing rolled for 300 feet, between telephone poles and between trees to find the passenger front corner of the car. The custom fender and custom paint job are damaged. I may be looking at a complete repaint!

I called 911, the lady asked if anyone had been hurt.... my response "not yet"! The guy didn't think there was an issue and was pissed I would call the cops. He said the tire was changed by CAA and it was their fault. I say he should have known there was something wrong (steering wheel shaking). Representatives from CAA showed up at a People Choice show at Bruce Mills Conservation area. His words when saw the car was holy fuck.

Interestingly, the CAA rep indicated they had changed the flat on the mini van on the passenger side, but it was the drivers side that fell off.

Now I deal with my insurance.

On the way home Saturday night around midnight, I just left the Woodstock service centre and got "surrounded" by a group of Fast and Furious cars, one of which was an EVO. They were trying to get me to go. I was much too tired and smart to do so. They didn't leave me alone until they got off in London.

I figured they were coming from Import Fest in downtown Toronto. If they were regulars there they may have remembered the car as it was shown in previous years and was an award winner.

That sucks Kev, luckily though your car took the hit and nobody got hurt by that wheel, that could have ended much worse.
Maybe leave the rest of the car but do something custom on the front for that corner? It's a good opportunity to do some "personalization"

Sucks to see Kevin, hopefully insurance makes you whole.

On the tuning note, pretty sure I know a few guys who are well versed in the old APEXi piggybacks, could try and get some info from them. I think going to an AEM plug and play will make finding a tuner easier and improve reliability and drivability 10x

I think the insurance will come to the table...since it is custom fender and paint, I may see if R&M is willing to handle it. Their hourly rates are similar to others, but they take their time to get it right. I'm not paying so we will see. Besides I don't think the average shop will want to touch it...I will be terribly picky! LOL

Chris, I think I may look at at the AEM or even the Haltech system; both are plug and play and certainly more modern than the older systems. Then need to ensure it is optimally tuned! then back to the see DaSilva, or someone similar.

Now I deal with my insurance.

This original post was August 8, 2016.

It has taken 9 months, feels like I'm having a baby, but FINALLY getting the car in to be repaired.

The insurance company has come to the table and the car is getting a complete repaint! The custom paint and flames could not be matched.
This is both good and bad. The bad is the amount of time required for the paint work, The good is that all that can be taken off will be taken off and painted properly. There were niggling little things that drove me nuts. As an example there are rubber gaskets around the door handles that were painted over, this will be corrected. There were stone chips that will also get corrected.

The 2017 ZCON in Austin Texas begins on June 20th (leaving on June 17th) so basically a month to get everything corrected, then cleaned up (we all know how sanding dust gets into everything) before we leave.
Maybe I'll get an award with the new paint job in the judged portion of the convention, who knows.

Final colour has not been determined, but I'm dropping the flames and will likely get away from the heavy metal flake that is currently on the car.

I'll post pictures as I get them.

post up what you figure out about your tuning issues. I have a friend down the road with a Z that is also running rich. He's thinking the car will have to come off the road in 2 years due to no pass on Etest. He reinstalled his cats and running on a conditional pass for not.

good luck on your repairs...

Pretty sure I'll be changing to an AEM or Haltech ECU. Just not sure I can get everything done before Texas. My tuner will be travelling with me.....he may not be sleeping when not driving!
These systems seem to have the necessary pieces to get these motors running optimally.

Visited the body shop today. Car has been taken apart (mirrors off, trim off, front and rear facia off) and sanding has begun. He was going to remove the glass, but was worried the window gaskets may not be available and didn't want to damage the windshield or deck glass.

Mid to late next week he said he will paint it, then there is the additional items such as polishing etc. and put it back together.

Didn't take a picture, but there was a Hemi GTX and a Pontiac GTO, with LS3 conversion, there that he previously painted. The GTO is black and I couldn't see ANY imperfections in the paint at all. The GTX was a sort of aqua blue, no imperfections in it either. So I think this guy will do a great job.

I have talked to him about my 1983 280ZX. I think he really wants to do the work and is anxious to get the car. Likely an LS swap.......when money arrives! LOL

Work being done by DiMilo Collision in Leamington.

Not back together yet, but getting there. I leave for Texas On June 17.
Two panels between the windshield and the back deck were painted gloss black to simulate a glass roof when viewed with the T-tops in place.

Needs black wheels, but I don't have enough time to source and install. Maybe when in Texas I can find something....but the judged show is on June 21st.
