Robby Gordon's parents have been found dead.
The violent deaths of Robert “Baja Bob” and Sharon Gordon – the father and step-mother of well-known race car driver Robby Gordon – shook the racing community Thursday.
“This is devastating,” his son said, fighting back tears. “He taught so many, and I want everyone to know what a good man he was.”
Some details emerged Thursday evening: A day earlier, Bob Gordon died from injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the results of an autopsy by the Orange County coroner’s office, while Sharon Gordon died from strangulation.
The police are investigating the deaths as a possible murder-suicide, said Lt. Fred Lopez of the Orange Police Department, adding that it doesn’t appear that police had answered calls to the house before.

Does Nascar have a hard on for Truex? Seems like time after time they go out of their way to screw this team over. Come on guys, failed by that much in the exact spot Harvick intentionally drove into him, get a job.
Furniture Row Racing (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/team-profiles/furniture-row-racing.html) said in a team release Monday that it accepts NASCAR's failed post-race inspection ruling, while also citing on-track contact with the No. 4 Chevrolet ofKevin Harvick (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/kevin-harvick.html) as the likely reason for being out of compliance.
"The right rear of our car was well within the tolerance margin, which showed that we were trying to be conservative," the statement read. "However, the left rear wheel alignment was off by approximately ten-thousandths of an inch, which in high probability was due to damage in that area as a result of being hit by the No. 4 car.
"We believe the laser inspection numbers were correct and accept NASCAR's decision that was made following Sunday's Sprint Cup (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series.html) Series race at Chicagoland Speedway (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/chicagoland-speedway.html)."
Truex Jr.'s race-winning No. 78 Toyota, along with the No. 48 Chevrolet of Jimmie Johnson (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/jimmie-johnson.html), failed post-race inspection after Sunday's Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series.html) Series opener at Chicagoland Speedway (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/chicagoland-speedway.html).
NASCAR recently updated its rules for "encumbered" victory penalties during the postseason, but those are not be in effect for Truex Jr. because it was the lowest grade of failure for the LIS platform.
Any penalties will be announced later in the week, according to NASCAR.
Oh, and they never did do anything about old Smoke and his on track BS two weeks in a row.

Can someone translate that into English for me? NASCAR is the only sport on the planet that changes the rules by which they play on a weekly basis.

Too bad it was because he sucked and not because he was taken out by any driver he has purposely crashed into in the past.
Race this week is Saturday night, hope the weather holds.
The Bank of America 500 (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/race-center/sprint-cup-series/bank-of-america-500.html) at Charlotte Motor Speedway (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/charlotte-motor-speedway.html) has been postponed to Sunday at Noon ET due to inclement weather, setting up a doubleheader for the second consecutive weekend. The Sprint Cup (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series.html) Series race will be broadcast on NBC, with the NASCAR XFINITY (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/xfinity-series.html) Series race following on NBCSN.
The decision to postpone from Saturday night to Sunday at noon was made at approximately 10:30 a.m. ET Saturday after rain pelted the track and surrounding area as the outer bands of Hurricane Matthew made their way through. Weather forecasts varied initially, but a change to Matthew's trajectory Saturday morning led to the call to postpone.
As of Saturday at 11 a.m., Matthew was a Category 1 hurricane after making landfall at McClellanville, South Carolina (about 55 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach), according to the National Weather Service.
Sunday will now serve as a doubleheader, putting on two races the same day on the same track for the second consecutive weekend.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/dale-earnhardt-jr.html). said it would be hard to explain, the perspective that he's gained being sidelined from NASCAR competition.
The driving part, he clearly misses. The related appearances, autograph sessions and other obligations have gained newfound enjoyment during his absence from the cockpit. The challenge for when he plans to return to driving full-time is finding a way to savor the two parts together.
Earnhardt described the contrasts Wednesday at Martinsville Speedway (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/martinsville-speedway.html), taking part in the announcement that the .526-mile track would add a lighting system as part of its 70th-anniversary season celebration in 2017. The driver, sidelined since July with concussion-related symptoms, also discussed how his time out of the car has spurred a recent health kick, offered him time to assist in planning his offseason wedding to fiancée Amy Reimann, and how it's taught him to relish race-weekend moments that go beyond his driving duties.
"When I was driving, I really didn't enjoy everything I did outside the car, reluctantly, just to do the driving part," Earnhardt said. "Now that I'm not in the car, I enjoy all the stuff that I'm doing outside the car that I've always done. I'm getting up in the morning race days to do the hospitalities or coming to do the winner's circle (appearances) here or Talladega, I've really enjoyed doing those things.
"The pressure of racing made the majority of everything that came with it miserable, and I probably am responsible for controlling that, right? And so, I think being out of the car has shown me that I've got to find a way that if I'm going to race more how to not feel so much pressure that it makes everything else intolerable or hard to do."
Earnhardt Jr., who turned 42 earlier this week, had his NASCAR Sprint Cup (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series.html) Series season cut short after 18 races because of concussion-like symptoms. The unexpected absence has allowed Earnhardt to participate in activities he would've otherwise missed, such as attending a drag-racing event in Concord, North Carolina, and taking in his high school's homecoming football game.
But his time away from the circuit's entry lists has also meant an unburdening, removing the weekly stress of performing for his No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/team-profiles/hendrick-motorsports-team-profile.html) team, which has found able substitutes in Jeff Gordon (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/jeff-gordon.html) and Alex Bowman (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/alex-bowman.html) while keeping Earnhardt Jr.'s name on the windshield and above the drivers' side window.
"I think once I get back in the car, I've got to have a whole new frame of mind about how I handle the pressure of driving and the pressures of performing and finishing well and all that good stuff," Earnhardt said. "… The driving is fun, and I never really had a problem with that. I enjoy being at the track, and I enjoy doing the hospitalities. I'm going to go do a Wal-Mart appearance somewhere in freakin' who-knows-where, and I would be so frustrated about that because of what I was going to be doing on a race weekend.
"It wasn't the appearance that had me bent out of shape. It's just the pressure of week to week to week, performing, performing, performing -- the expectations of everything, myself and everyone else made all that sort of a heavy, heavy weight on my back. Now without the performance and the worry of having to perform, I go do this stuff and have fun. So I've got to figure out how to race and have fun, if that makes any sense."
Another unintended byproduct of his time away has been weight loss. With Reimann's encouragement, Earnhardt said he's had more of a dedicated fitness routine, something he never had to consider much during his weekly racing obligations since drivers routinely burn hundreds of calories inside the car during a race weekend.
"The only thing I ever had to worry about was just making sure I fit in my suit," Earnhardt said, adding that he's lost roughly eight pounds since beginning his rehab regimen for his concussion-like symptoms. "Any time we had to alter the suit, I had to start watching what I was eating, like we're getting out of control here."
And Earnhardt Jr. has also kept busy with planning his upcoming nuptials with Reimann in the offseason.
"We're definitely not being lazy and pushing everything off until the last minute, but it feels like it's right around the corner," Earnhardt said. "We just want it to be a great day. I think that's the same way everybody kind of feels. They just want everything to go right and not have anything go wrong. We're just making sure we've got all our T's crossed and all our I's dotted, so that that day's a special day for us."
While he's finding advice on floral arrangements and other details to make the event go off without a hitch, he's also been receiving unsolicited advice from all corners about his treatment plan. If there was a Highlights for Children etiquette lesson on how best to interact with people with his condition, the would-be physicians lighting up his XFINITY (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/xfinity-series.html)Series team's switchboard fall under the heading of Goofus as opposed to Gallant.
"I think the wrong thing to say would be to give any kind of medical advice because you've got to listen to your doctors," Earnhardt said. "We've got people calling every single day to JR Motorsports: 'tell Dale to try this, tell Dale to drink this drink, tell him to eat this, tell him to quit milk' -- all kinds of crazy, hare-brained reasons why I'm ill or need to get better, what'll speed it up and all that stuff. I've got doctors, they're smart, they know everything I need to do and that's who I need to listen to, obviously."
And the right way to offer support?
"'Look forward to seeing you back at the track,' sounds awesome," Earnhardt said. "I want to hear that. 'Get well' is great. I like to know that people want me to be well, so anytime, that feels good."

Dale Jr said in the latest edition of the Dale Jr. Download podcast released Monday that his rehabilitation from a concussion is "going along as planned" and that he has been driving a simulator but still misses competing in a race car most.
Earnhardt Jr. talked for about eight minutes at the start of the podcast, praising the efforts of his substitute driver Alex Bowman (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/alex-bowman.html), who finished seventh at the Hollywood Casino 400 (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/race-center/sprint-cup-series/hollywood-casino-400.html) at Kansas Speedway (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/kansas-speedway.html).

"We've been running around and trying to do everything we're supposed to be doing outside the car while we're not able to drive just yet," Earnhardt Jr. said. "Boy, today (Sunday) was a day where I would have liked to have been in there for sure running that high side. That's really enjoyable."
He added that he's "still working on all my rehabilitation and doing all the stuff the doctors have been asking me to do. All of that is going along as planned, no setbacks."
The simulator work is part of the "outside the car" activities that have kept him busy in recent weeks, along with sponsor appearances and a visit to Martinsville Speedway (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/nascar-tracks/martinsville-speedway.html)last week to help unveil the track's new lights.

Still, it's no substitute for actually taking the wheel of a race car. NASCAR announced new participation guidelines for its three national series Wednesday, limiting the amount of NASCAR XFINITY (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/xfinity-series.html) Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/camping-world-truck-series.html) Series races that full-time drivers in its premier series will be allowed to compete in, starting in 2017.
Beginning next year, the rules parameters will limit Cup Series drivers with more than five years' full-time experience to a maximum of 10 races in the NASCAR XFINITY (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/xfinity-series.html)Series and seven events in the NASCAR Camping World Truck (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/camping-world-truck-series.html) Series.
The new guidelines will also prohibit premier series drivers at that experience level from participating in those two series' final eight events of the year -- a span that includes the regular-season finale and the seven-race Chase playoffs for both circuits. In the case of the XFINITY (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/xfinity-series.html) Series, full-time Cup Series competitors will also be restricted from the four races in the Dash 4 Cash program.

Should have taken it further limiting larger teams from using multiple drivers through the year. Limit should have been more specific to 10 races per car or something like that. It was a decent effort but left a gaping loophole that will still see top flight drivers in all the races.

"We're doing all our photo shoots and everything with the anticipation of our sponsors marketing me as the driver of the (No.) 88 car. "We can't sort of sit and wait … those types of things have to be decided quite early. So we're moving forward with the plan for me to be in the car and I don't see anything that says that's not going to happen. Things are good."

Visibly disappointed not to race in Fort Worth, DiBenedetto said he will follow the protocol and visit doctors Monday in Charlotte, North Carolina, so he can get medical clearance to compete next week at Phoenix.

"It's in my blood and I probably handle these kind of situations of not being cleared to drive the car worse than any guy in the field. I've really been struggling with it.
"I feel perfectly fine so it's really going to be very difficult for me watching my car go around the race track. But Jeffrey Earnhardt (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/sprint-cup-series/drivers/jeffrey-earnhardt.html) will do a good job. He's one of my best friends and I'm glad and appreciative of him for stepping in for us in this situation. I know it's not great. No practice and he'll have to fire off. But we trust him.
"I'm definitely discouraged, but we'll go through this, go through their protocol. I have to, even though I feel fine, but they have a protocol and things set in place that I have to follow, whether I like it or not. I will do it, get it done and look forward to Phoenix."
Devine offered his support in making sure DiBenedetto goes through all the proper protocol to make a start at Phoenix.
"It's OK to err on the side of caution, but we'll get through it and I think at the end of the day, they've done the right thing," Devine said. "They felt it was best he go through the process and be sure. That's as simple as it is. It's about making sure he's OK. We'll meet with them to understand the process better and see what they saw. In the meantime, it's better not to have him in the car."
In hindsight, DiBenedetto smiled slightly and wondered if perhaps he should have handled things differently immediately after the accident. He insists he didn't feel any medical repercussions from the impact.
"Not the slightest bit, not even two seconds after the crash," DiBenedetto said. "If I could redo the situation knowing now how it turned out I would have sprinted down (the banking), maybe done jumping jacks. But everything happens for a reason.
"At this time I need to remain calm and remember they are doing their jobs."
Anyone else see the vid footage? Dude could hardly walk, seemed to be disoriented, bell clearly rung hard. Nice he wants to be back in the car today but with their protocol in place he has no choice until doc's clear him next week.

Why not just make the whole season 1 race. Go to Daytona and the winner is the champion. Chase is stupid. I hate the 22 but I was pulling for hm to beat he 48. Pretty sad that a teams whole season rides on 1 race and the driver feels he has to defend like Edwards did on the restart with the 22. 1 bad decision (forced by the stupid chase) decides the entire season for a whole team.
Congrats to 48 team for falling into a 7th Championship which means absolutely nothing when compared to 7 whole season championships by Petty and Earnhardt.

Joey's inability to be patient combined with Carl's move to keep himself in contention cost the pair of them a shot at the end. Jimmy's ability to stay calm n focused on the prize paid off in spite of him not having the car to win. If those two had stayed outta trouble, very doubtful he'd have finished ahead of them. In the end, it is what it is, hate the game, not the players. You can rest assured it was a tough go back in the day, just as challenging but in different ways now.
Respect for JJ and his 7 championships.

Along with the announcement of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. being cleared to race in 2017 came good news for Alex Bowman.
The 23-year-old, who filled in for Dale Jr. in 10 races in 2016, will drive the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet SS one more time in The Clash at Daytona International Speedway, the season-opening non-points race for pole position winners from the previous season.
Bowman won the pole for the Can-Am 500 at Phoenix International Raceway in November, and without a full-time ride for 2017, there were talks about how he would compete in The Clash.
Recently, team owner Rick Hendrick said that he would find a way to put Bowman in The Clash but hadn't confirmed which car he'd drive. Now, everything is set for Bowman to get behind the wheel of the No. 88 one more time.
“Alex did such a great job in the car this year, and I felt like he deserved another opportunity,” Earnhardt, Jr. said of his 2016 replacement. “When I spoke with Rick and the team about him driving The Clash, everyone agreed that he more than earned it, and Nationwide was 100-percent on board. I’m really grateful to him and Jeff for what they did for our team, and I’m glad Alex is getting another run with us.”

maybe. but I doubt his contracts and sponsors etc would let him just walk out of spite. there must be something pretty big going on here, and also likely something sudden (illness?). It this was something he was planning the team could have gone in a different direction signing a replacement months ago when the silly season was at it's peak and other driver options were still available.

Not impressed. How about this, 30 points for a win, 20 for second and down to 1 for 21st. After that, no more points. No points for leading a lap, no points for leading the most laps, or leading at half way, or leading at night on a Monday after a rain out. Make winning mean something. If they want to kept the chase, the final 10 or sixteen races are as follows: the races are split into two, one for those in the chase and one for those not those not, and there is no longer an elimination, it's a 10 race best overall points total, winner take all.

Far too complex a system for the average casual fan. People will lose interest because they don't understand the scoring system. As much as I have hated the Chase format, there must be a better way. I think NASCAR in general has lost its way under Brian France's direction.

It is going to be fucking painful to listen to the tools in the booth trying to explain this over and over and over. Thankfully about 95% of the race I watch on fast forward (no sound).
Add heat races to Stephens scoring and call it done. 3 50 lap heats, one 15 lap LCQ then set the field order for a 100 lap feature. No need for this overly complex BS.
Upside to it, will keep more cars racing the entire race vs riding around at the back, especially those desperate for points.

CONCORD, N.C. -- Repairing damaged vehicles during a NASCAR race sometimes is as common a sight as pit stops, restarts and checkered flags.
But the extent to which teams can make repairs will be more tightly policed beginning with the 2017 season.
NASCAR officials unveiled a new Damaged Vehicle Policy on Wednesday at the sanctioning body's Research & Development Center, a policy that will be enforced in all three national series -- Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (http://www.nascar.com/en_us/monster-energy-nascar-cup-series.html), XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series.
Under the guidelines, teams no longer will be allowed to replace damaged body parts that are the result of accidents or contact. Repairs, such as fixing damaged sheet metal, will be allowed; however, teams will be given five minutes to fix damage once they enter pit road. If the damage requires the car to go behind pit wall or to the garage for repairs, the car will not be allowed to return to the race. Also, if the repairs take longer than the five minutes allowed, the car will not be permitted to return to the race.
Once repairs have been made, a car is still required to maintain the minimum speed determined for that event. Once that has been accomplished, the five-minute clock is reset in case the car needs to come back down pit road.
Previously, teams were allowed to replace any damaged panels or parts with no time limit and no penalty. Quarter panels, splitters, hoods and deck lids damaged in accidents were often removed and replaced. Some repairs were completed on pit road; more extensive damage often meant a trip to the garage. Each time, the driver was sent back out onto the track as quickly as possible.
That will no longer be the case.
"We have a lot of cars that are going back on the track that end up in 38th position, for instance, that probably don't need to be out there from a safety and competition aspect," Scott Miller, NASCAR senior vice president of competition, told NASCAR.com, "because they always tend to bring out more yellows with stuff falling off."
Heavily damaged cars that need extensive repairs that can't be done on pit road, Miller said, "are essentially going to be out of the race.
"There will be many circumstances and many things happen and you will continue to see it where cars are in wrecks and never go to the garage area. They come down pit road, they work on things … and they go back out and make minimum speed. They continue to work on the car as the race goes on. That will still completely be in play."
Miller said the move is to help officials, who didn't often see what goes on in the garage but can better observe repairs on pit road.
Miller has worked "on the other side of the fence" as a crew chief and is aware of the hurried atmosphere surrounding a car undergoing significant repairs in the garage.
"I've been involved in crash repairs and that's not a great situation down there in the garage with 20 people running around, oil leaking on the floor, things catching on fire and sharp sheet metal being cut off," he said. "It's a fairly unsafe situation. And at times it would be unsafe really for the driver to get back in a car that was damaged that heavily. There's nothing that doesn't come with some downside, but I think there is a lot of upside to where we are going with this."
Safety is a crucial component of the policy, and for any vehicle undergoing repairs, the integrity of the safety systems "must be maintained."
Teams will be allowed to correct mechanical or electrical failures that aren't the result of an accident or contact without penalty. Such repairs may be done on pit road or in the garage area, and the five-minute clock will not be in play in those instances.
"We're not going to tell a guy who breaks his transmission at Watkins Glen or Pocono, for instance, and coasts into the garage area that he's out," Miller said. "Because that doesn't create an unsafe situation; that is a mechanical failure.
"It's more about crashed vehicles and all that is involved with that, from the crew guys to the drivers to dropping more debris on the track, which always happens. … So there are exceptions for mechanical failures, those things can be rectified in the garage. That's going to be up to the series director's discretion to make those calls, but it's not going to be that difficult."
There will be modifications to at least two pit-road penalties under the policy for those making repairs. Any driver receiving a pit-road speeding penalty (entry or exit) will lose 15 seconds from the five-minute clock. Any team sending too many men over the wall will result in that car being removed from the race.
"Speeding comes with an additional penalty because speeding in or out is a way to circumvent the clock," Miller said.
When a car is damaged and repairs are made on pit road, teams know they will be at the tail end of the longest line, so extra men often go over the wall. (Each team is allowed six to work on the car and one to service the driver and/or windshield.)
"That's another thing we discussed with the teams and internally," he said. "Too many men over the wall is also defeating the purpose of the policy; it would encourage teams to bring extra people well-versed in going over the wall to repair cars. So too many men over the wall just has to signal the end of that car's day."
What will race fans see with the new policy? It's what they won't see, Miller said, that is behind the change.
"What they won't see is stuff we don't like to see, cars running around out there with stuff flying off," he said. "We don't like that because it creates yellows, it creates debris for other cars to run over, it creates a dangerous situation. That's what they won't see. What they will see are quality cars on the race track racing one another."

Far too complex a system for the average casual fan. People will lose interest because they don't understand the scoring system. As much as I have hated the Chase format, there must be a better way. I think NASCAR in general has lost its way under Brian France's direction.

It is going to be fucking painful to listen to the tools in the booth trying to explain this over and over and over. Thankfully about 95% of the race I watch on fast forward (no sound).
Add heat races to Stephens scoring and call it done. 3 50 lap heats, one 15 lap LCQ then set the field order for a 100 lap feature. No need for this overly complex BS.
I'm at best a very casual fan, watch maybe 3 or 4 races a year and never bothered to understand the point system or chase for the cup because it simply didn't matter. But now I have no idea what is going on with this new stages thing. Are they pausing the race in the middle, or doing some sort slow down to bunch up the cars for restarts?
I'm actually happy they are putting a limit on repairs, having the guys with no front sheet metal going slower than everyone else is just a crash waiting to happen. But what I don't get is the desire to have 40 cars in every single race, no matter how competitive some of them are. To me there should be some sort of limit on how many laps down you can go before you get pulled. If you are in 35th place and 7 laps down you aren't winning, just get off the track and get whatever points you would get for that position.
Yes caution flag at the end of each stage followed by restart. No doubt idea is to keep the field bunched up but since there will be points at stake for the top 10 at the end of each stage, should make a marked difference in those that typically just ride around the back especially at the super speedways.
Don't' see a downside myself.

They picked up 10 races now, including the 500. I thinks she is still a few races short of a full season ride. But cool to see that they stepped up.

Known for being one of the few female NASCAR drivers and inking pretty massive sponsorship deals, Danica Patrick has been one of the most talked-about racers in the industry – especially recently. In January 2017, it was revealed that her biggest sponsor had cancelled its contract with her racing team and legal action ensued.
Now, the 34-year-old NASCAR driver is opening up about an issue that affects many more people than just herself and she explains how that might force her to retire.
Fellow NASCAR star and friend of Patrick’s, Dale Earnhardt Jr., has also experienced major health issues and his retirement has been questioned by many – even legendary driver Richard Petty suggested that Dale Jr. should not have returned to the track. In 2016, Dale Jr. endured two hard-hits on the track and suffered from a severe concussion that yanked him from the driver’s seat for the remainder of the season.
Along those same lines, Danica Patrick is opening up about her experience with severe concussions and noting that retirement is just one bad crash away. Speaking on Wednesday (February 22nd) during the Daytona 500 Media Day, Patrick explained that by her account she’d suffered from at least a dozen concussions in her career.
“I’ve had concussions. Every time you crash, you have a concussion on a varying degree,” Patrick said. “When [Earnhardt] said something about having 12 concussions, I’m like, ‘I’m sure I’ve had 12 concussions.’ … It makes you think.”
While she hasn’t ever suffered one as bad as Dale Jr. did, she says that his choice to take a break was good for every single driver out there.
“It makes you pay attention to yourself, and there’s nothing better than having somebody like Dale Jr. going as far as getting out of the car as long as he did, saying, ‘Hey, I have a problem,’ because it makes it more available to everyone else.”
With the availability of specialized medical attention and the knowledge of the impact concussions and crashes on the track have on a driver’s body, Patrick says that she will not take any chances and if a doctor diagnosed her as being at risk with another crash, she wouldn’t hesitate to retire.
“I think that we’d like to sweep it all under the rug as drivers like we feel fine and nothing is wrong,” she said. “But it’s our life. If there was someone that told me or, I would hope any other driver, if you have another wreck, you could have a serious problem, then they would [choose to] be out.”

2 young guys I was cheer for both out of fuel on the last lap. ooops.
rest of the race was a gong show like most plate races with "the BIG ONE" happening on every restart.
Stages just made 3 laps relevant in this race instead of only 1 and had crew chiefs second guessing themselves needlessly. really no significant improvement to the event at all. just new confusion.
and the #1 needs to be parked after causing two wrecks.

Just watching some NASCAR practice and learned something new. All the Goodyear tires have RFID chips in them so that they can be tracked by NASCAR. For example, the cars must start the race on the tires they qualified on so NASCAR scans the tires after qualifying and then again before the start of the race.
Very cool.

Oh thank God that NASCAR added these stages to bring more excitement to the races ... errr, nevermind. First 2 won by a land slide so nothing new and exciting there, then the end of the race was decided by a pit road penalty. Complete snorefest, even with the new stages. So far 0-for-2 for the stages bringing significant improvement to the "product".
However, I like some of the young kids that are racing now so it was cool to see Chase and Kyle Lawson being relevant to the finish.

Austin Dillon and Cole Custer were racing hard in Saturday's DC Solar 200 at Phoenix Raceway when Custer's No. 00 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford clipped Dillon's No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet on Lap 191 -- and sparked some chippy driving.
As a result of the contact, Dillon's No. 2 Chevy went spinning, while Custer was able to save his car and continue the race.
But during the resulting caution, Dillon drove up and made contact with Custer, forcing the No. 00 Ford into the outside wall. As a result, Dillon, his crew chief Justin Alexander and his spotter were called to the NASCAR hauler after the race.
"It was 100 percent my fault," Custer said after the race. "I got in there too deep, got really loose going in and couldn't put any wheel into it. That was pretty much it. Just all my fault. Something that won't happen again. We had a great race leading up to that. ... It is unfortunate I cost us and the 2 car there.
"It definitely sucks for us points-wise but I guess you can kind of expect that when he gets taken out," Custer continued on Dillon's response. "I can understand how frustrated he is about it. It is what it is. I will try not to have that happen again."
Dillon was scored 33rd, while Custer finished 21st.
The red flag eventually was displayed for clean-up.
JR Motorsports had some very strong cars yesterday n not only won the race but took 100k as a bonus. Great race to watch.

That was a really entertaining race today. I guess when the top cars start at the back and all the drivers are afraid of the track it works itself into a great race. Sort of the perfect storm that we unfortunately may not see again for a while, but shit that was fun today. It also helps that I jumped on the #42 bandwagon when JG retired.
I really enjoyed the race as well.

NASCAR and Charlotte Motor Speedway today announced the format for the 2017 Monster Energy All-Star Race, one that rewards winning and incorporates a fascinating strategy component.
The race format is as follows:
- The race will feature four stages (20 laps, 20 laps, 20 laps, 10 laps), totaling 70 laps, an ode to the 1992 edition of the same distance.
- The goal for all competitors: Earn a spot in the final 10-lap, 10-car stage.
- The winner of each of the first three stages will lock up a spot in the final stage, as long as they remain on the lead lap after the third stage.
- The cars with the best average finish in the first three stages will make up the remaining spots needed to fill the 10-car final stage.
- The remaining 10 cars will be lined up by average finish of the first three stages and given the option to pit. Exit off pit road determines starting order for final stage.
- The winner will be awarded $1,000,000.
Crew chief strategy has been at a premium throughout this season, and that won't change in the All-Star Race thanks to a unique opportunity granted each team: A coveted set of softer tires. Each team will have one set of these tires available to use at their discretion. A softer tire provides the car with more grip and, thus, speed. In other words, it's a game-changer. But there's a catch: Teams that choose to put on their softer tires to start the final stage must start behind those that choose regular tires.

Qualifying for the main event, which returns to Friday night, will again include the wildly popular 'no speed limit' four-tire pit stop. Each team will have three timed laps, one of which will include a mandatory four-tire pit stop with no pit-road speed limits enforced. The five quickest teams will advance to the final round of qualifying to determine starting positions one through five. The team that completes the fastest stop will earn the Pit Crew Competition Award.
The Monster Energy Open will occur Saturday evening prior to the Monster Energy All-Star Race and will include three stages (20 laps, 20 Laps, 10 laps). The winner of each stage will earn a spot in the All-Star race. The Monster Energy Open field will be set by two rounds of traditional knock-out qualifying.
Those eligible for the Monster Energy All-Star Race include: Drivers who won a points event in either 2016 or 2017; drivers who won a Monster Energy Series All-Star Race and compete fulltime; and drivers who won a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship and compete fulltime. Those who have not already earned a spot via the above criteria can still lock-in by winning a stage in the Monster Energy Open or by winning the Fan Vote.

My prediction. Each of the 3 stage winners will drive around slowly at the back of the pack to preserve their car for the final stage. Everyone will opt for the soft tires in the final stage except maybe for a couple of guys who are to start at the back. The only part of the race to watch will be qualifying and the last 10 laps.. Maybe. I haven't watched a single race this year. Not interested anymore. Sorry nascar has turned into a suckfest. The current stages in a race are nothing more than very thinly disguised "timed cautions" like in the truck series.

I agree. #1 reason for the stages was to appease advertisers so that they can get adds in under caution rather than cutting away during green flag racing. #2 reason was to make these mean something to the teams with some points so that they were not pointless (pun intended) like in the trucks last year. A byproduct of the stages is that there may be a need to stop fast forwarding the DVR for a few laps twice during the race to see if it gets interesting. But so far it kinda hasn't. Sure it has made some impact on the points standings, but has it really improved the racing? IMO only a little. And not enough, IMO, to warrant having 8-12 caution laps added to the race. The broadcasters have been trying to say that the stages were added to improve the product on the track, but that is BS, it was first and foremost added to get more commercials on air. And that's the part that bothers me. I get some of the tire rules and aero packages etc are improving the racing, but when something is added simply and blatantly to improve profits it turns me away.
Of the opposite opinion, not seeing the norm of contender cars riding around the back even in a 500 mile race. To me, stage racing has pushed them to race the entire race vs just the last X number of laps.
Highly sceptical when they announced the changes, enjoying the racing it's produced. Now, just need to see Jr running better on a consistent basis n the stars will be back in alignment.

Absolutely. For a sport built on parity it is good to finally see some other cars in the mix.
But much of that last week had to do with the unknown track surface. Did you watch practice? For the first hour the top times were all set by new guys. Some of the veterans still hadn't taken their balls out of their wives purses yet while these kids (who had little past Texas experience to go back on) were tearing it up. It really leveled the field for a while. But once that second groove opened up late in the race it settled back to normal with the usual cars charging forward. They should repave every week!!! lol
I suspect for at least some of the newer blood, able to make the car do seemingly impossible things because they have no idea it's incapable. :)
Fun watching the Wood Bros entry have so much success. Think of them as a cornerstone of Nascar.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will retire following the 2017 NASCAR season, Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday in a press release.
The 14-time Most Popular Driver has won 26 times in 603 starts over a career that began at age 24 in 1999. Among his accomplishments are two Daytona 500 crowns (2004, 2014) and two championships (1998, 1999) in what is now called the NASCAR XFINITY Series.
Earnhardt, 42, returned to competition in the No. 88 Chevrolet this year after a concussion sidelined him from NASCAR's top series for half of the 2016 season. Through his rehabilitation process, Earnhardt has become a vocal advocate for research of sports-related brain injuries.

A little contact is customary in short-track racing. But the heavy contact that led to the derailment of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s first race since setting his retirement plans in motion came from an unexpected source -- a teammate.
Neither Earnhardt nor Jimmie Johnson -- his Hendrick Motorsports stablemate -- saw each other before Johnson's No. 48 Chevrolet swept up the track to broadside Earnhardt's No. 88, compounding an already frustrating Sunday at Richmond International Raceway. Both continued on, with Johnson leading the four-car Hendrick charge in 11th place, but Earnhardt faded to a 30th-place finish in the Toyota Owners 400, two laps down.
"I was running the top (groove) right against the fence and really wasn't watching the mirrors," Earnhardt said. "I didn't even know he was there or anybody was coming. T.J. (Majors, his spotter) was giving me pretty good warning about guys getting on my inside, but otherwise when you're running the top, you don't have to worry about it. Everybody kind of takes care of you, but Jimmie didn't know we were there.
"It was an explosion, but the car held up pretty well. It knocked the sway bar arm off it, so we ran the last bit of the race without a sway bar hooked up, but wasn't a great day."
Johnson, a winner in the previous two races, also remarked about the severity of the impact. After the checkered flag, Johnson sought out Earnhardt on pit road for a team debrief and to apologize for his part in the collision.
"Trying to figure out if I didn't hear it being told to me or if it wasn't told to me," Johnson said. "Just feel terrible, obviously. Man, I'm surprised our cars even kept rolling after that because I just bodyslammed him in the wall, and I could've easily not heard the clear or something else happened, I don't know. But it's the last thing you want to have happen with a teammate."
Sadly, twat in the 22 took the win with Twatmaster in second place.

Logano's win counts but doesn't after penalty, first of it's kind.
NASCAR on Thursday issued an L1-level penalty to Team Penske's No. 22 team for a rear suspension violation discovered during teardown at the R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina. The penalty carries multiple consequences, which includes making Joey Logano's win at Richmond on Sunday encumbered.
The encumbered win is the first for a victorious Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team since NASCAR adopted that policy in 2016. What that means is Logano cannot use the Richmond win as consideration for an automatic playoff spot. Should Logano still make the postseason, the five playoff points that come with a victory would not apply for Richmond. The official race record will still list Logano as the winner.
Additional penalties are a $50,000 fine and two-race suspension for crew chief Todd Gordon, and the loss of 25 driver points and 25 owner points.
The violation was under Section 20 of the NASCAR Rule Book. According to the penalty grid NASCAR issued, the No. 22 team did not adhere to the following: the Truck trailing arm spacer/pinion angle shim mating surfaces must be planar and must be in complete contact with corresponding mating surfaces at all points and at all times.
In a statement, Team Penske announced it would not appeal the penalties.
"We understand and accept the penalty that was communicated to us today by NASCAR following last weekend’s victory by the No. 22 car at Richmond," the statement read. "We are disappointed by the notice, however, we do not plan to appeal the penalty. The No. 22 team remains focused on competing for wins as we work toward the NASCAR Playoffs and a Championship. Race Engineer Miles Stanley will serve as Joey Logano's crew chief this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, while Greg Erwin will help call race strategy on Sunday.”
Been thinking about it, when a car fails post race inspection (or in this case, just plain cheated) why is the win not stripped and it awarded to the second place car? They cheated on something that gave them what Nascar deemed a major infraction (which we would assume mean significant advantage over the competition), should be kicked directly to the curb including a driver suspension.

Agree. Still have not watched a race this year.
I'm enjoying the segment racing, keeps them more up on the wheel when winning / placing well in a segment means points. Not seeing the typical ride around the back to stay safe happening which for us the fans means racing the entire race, all win there.
However, the want to watch races is fading hard here as well. Tired of Nascar's inconsistent enforcement of the rules n manipulating as they see fit. Mystery caution to tighten the field up or bring who they'd like to see win closer to the front is bs. Same for shiat like last season when Ol Harv had a car everyone knew would not be able to go on the restart but instead caused a caution and a finishing position he did not deserve n stole a win from someone that did deserve it. We can only assume by Toyota's performance this year, did not spend enough on track A, B or C to see that performance continue. They are reducing Nascar to Pro Wrestling.
Only ace in the hole for filling seats rest of this season, peeps that want to be there when Jr runs his last races. After the excitement fades, attendance will resume it's slide into the abyss.

I was actually surprised to see how many empty seats there were at the last Sunday race. Normally Sunday's are packed but the air shots showed a lot more empty seats than occupied in some of the stands.

One thing that comes to mind is all the marketing behind the win (victory lane pictures and all that cannot be exploited by the #2 car sponsors because they never happened. Add to that that the infraction was cheating (as I understand it they used a round shaped shim when it should have been flat - so a legit cheat in its design, not something that came loose or moved during the stresses against it during the race) however at 1/32 of an inch it was not significant enough to give him a real speed advantage (he wasn't the fastest car ever during the race, just right place right time to get a win - there were many more dominant cars all day long). And, there is a good chance the #2 car could have had the same issue and they didn't want to open an even wider can of worms by stripping a win from to top 2 cars giving it to 3rd, and hoping to fuck it then could pass inspection. NASCAR management is such a shit show that I think they just figured the best way to slap the #22's wrist for the cheat but make the rest of it all go away, and still keep sponsors happy was to do what they did. I'm not defending it, I think the whole thing is brutal, just trying to see all the angles to understand it.
And grats to Stenhouse Jr, nice to see him get his first win after a bunch of years of trying. Shitty day for Chase Elliot, that was some ride he took to end what could have been a great day for him.
The advantage it provided was with turn in, may have actually cost a tic of straight line speed. Yea would have been interesting if they dumped his win n awarded to the second place / #2 car only to have it fail for the exact same reason. Shiat show supreme and you can bet they figured thats exactly how it would'a played out.

The #2 car was in for inspection as well (top 2 finishers plus one random IIRC) so I'm really curious what they found and how much cover up was going on. Handing out penalties to the winner is awful for the sport, doing it to the top 2 could be devastating for NASCAR and they are already pretty fragile.

Do it - buy a lower row ticket for one day and a higher row ticket for the next. Great views around most of MIS - I've sat on either side of the main stretch/finish line and over by the entrance to pit lane (turn 4). I prefer rows 16-30 personally (mostly 20-30 actually but have sat in row 16 at MIS; closest was first row on back stretch at Daytona for the full effect of the cars at 200mph). When I was at Daytona 3 years ago a wheel landed in row 14 so I don't sit below row 20 now.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s post-driving career will include a role on a new home renovation show that’s to air on the DIY Network in 2018.
The untitled show will feature Earnhardt and his wife, Amy, as they renovate a dilapidated historic home in the Old Town district of Key West, Fla., into what the network describes as a “gorgeous modern retreat.”
The DIY Network will air four half-hour episodes in which the Earnhardts will encounter the usual issues associated with transforming an older fixer-upper: structural damage, faulty plumbing, and ancient wiring. An exact air date has not been announced.
“Amy and I are excited to take on our first home renovation project together,” Earnhardt Jr. said “Amy is a fantastic designer. She has creative ideas and a strong work ethic. We love DIY projects around the house, and so I expect this to be challenging but fun.”
The Earnhardts were married this past New Year’s Eve. They met when Amy, working as an interior designer, helped Earnhardt design his custom-built North Carolina home.
Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR’s 14-time most popular driver, announced April 25 he would retire from racing full time at the end of the current season. He plans to remain in the sport as a team owner and has said he’s interested in an analyst role with Fox Sports or NBC, which split broadcasting Cup and Xfinity Series races.

As for the 88 car, might as well scoot on over to the tv studio n start filming, nothing good happening on that entire team. Number of screw ups each and every race looks more akin to a rookie team moved up to the big leagues 5 years too soon vs top level Nascar competitors.

Driver of the 10 car, class act whining n bitching about the end to her day while Almirola was actually hurt.
I'm not sure how she still even has a ride. She seems to get worse every year.

The state of the 88 team is a travesty. Makes one wonder if they're just phoning it in.

The team did not provide an update on how much time, if any, Almirola would miss with the injury and said further updates would be provided when available.

“Aric Almirola, driver of the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford, has been released from a local Kansas hospital and will fly back to his home in Mooresville, N.C. today.
Almirola suffered a compression fracture to his T5 Vertebra after a multi-car accident at Kansas Speedway Saturday night. Almirola is mobile and will follow-up with his doctors in Charlotte.
Richard Petty Motorsports will provide further updates when available.”

Both he and #10 took hard hits - I'm surprised she was unscathed. Crazy to see his car with the roof cut open.
Was concerned for all until she popped out of the car then Joey.
Regan Smith will drive the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford in Saturday night’s Monster Energy Open (6 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio), substituting for an injured Aric Almirola. Winning either one of the event’s three stages would qualify Smith and the team for the Monster Energy All-Star Race.

Richard Childress Racing announced changes to its crew chief lineup Monday morning, naming Justin Alexander as a replacement for Richard “Slugger” Labbe with the No. 3 Chevrolet team and driver Austin Dillon.
Alexander moves over from RCR’s No. 2 Chevrolet in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. His first race atop the No. 3 pit box will be Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 (6 p.m. ET, FOX, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The Richard Childress-owned team announced that Randall Burnett, most recently with JTG Daugherty Racing, will take Alexander’s place within its XFINITY Series operations. Burnett was replaced last weekend by veteran Ernie Cope on JTG Daugherty’s No. 47 Chevrolet team with driver AJ Allmendinger.
Labbe, 48, had been with Richard Childress Racing since 2011. The team indicated in a news release that Labbe “is leaving the company to pursue other opportunities.”
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series’ most recent points-paying event at Kansas Speedway was Labbe’s 500th race as a crew chief in NASCAR’s premier series. He has five victories as a crew chief, including Michael Waltrip’s 2003 Daytona 500 win and Paul Menard’s Indianapolis triumph in 2011.
Labbe has worked with Dillon since the midpoint of the 2015 season. This year, Dillon ranks just 22nd in the series standings, with his lone top-five finish a fifth place at Martinsville Speedway. RCR replaced Labbe with Sammy Johns for one race earlier this season, at Richmond International Raceway.
Alexander was atop the pit box for the team’s two victories in the XFINITY tour last year, going back to back with Dillon winning at Bristol Motor Speedway and Michael McDowell taking Road America. He previously worked in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, serving parts of three seasons with Menard and Childress’ No. 27 Chevrolet.
