T5 input shimming Q
I'm replacing the input shaft bearing retainer.
I removed the old retainer, pulled the bearing race and shim. I put the race only into the new retainer and measured runout using an Amazon vice grip/flex shaft dial indicator.
I measured .037". I have .038 and a few other shims.
My question is, how close to .037" do I need to get?
I also have decent confidence in the Amazon tool, but if there is error it will be with shaft flex that will result in undermeasuring the runout. I may loose a .001 or two of measured runout to shaft flex.
My first time doing the job.
I did find an excellent series on T5 rebuilding on YT by JunkYardDog where he put in exactly the amount of shim that he measured.

What are you using a preload spec?

I'm not sure I understand the Q so will make an assumption.
I put the transmission on end, input facing down. I put the dial indicator on the end of the output shaft. I lifted the input shaft by hand several times getting a repeatable measurement of .037"
This was with the outer race placed in the new output retainer with no shim.
The new retainer was cynched down with my electric impact enough to seat but not torqued.

I followed the process detailed in this video starting at 41 minutes.

No problem, while some like to build at zero preload (as in the vid) others when using new bearings will preload 2 ish thou. No right or wrong in my eyes.

well that makes things easy as I measured .037 and have an .038
I'm just following YT recipes on this and aren't knowledgeable enough to make the call on my own, but your feedback has resolved this for me.
This is what forums are for.

it turns out I don't have the correct shim combo. I did a quick caliper measurement that looked good but my micrometer says different.
Where do you source shims?
I'm trying to make .037 through .039 and have .018, .012, .033, .034
calipers say the OD is 2.5 and ID is 2.12

Might be able to buy from TDS transmission.
