Doing some maintenance on the Cobra today, noticed oil had been flinging off of the pinion flange when driving last summer. Housing around the pinion flange is bone dry. Removed the drive shaft to have a look and found diff fluid leaking from the pinion nut threads. Does this mean the pinion seal is bad?
Normally it's the silicone on the splines has deteriorated n allowing oil by.
Never new there was sealant on the spline. If thats the case and specific sealant to use to reseal?Quote:

Wipe splines on the pinion best you can, remove old silicone and fluid from the pinion flange and nut. Slide the flange back on with a smear of silicone full length of it's splines (not on the pinion itself as you may push silicone into the bearing), before installing the nut, silicone on it's flat face plus just a little on the pinion gear threads. Spin the nut on slowly so you don't fling the sealant off. No reason not to mark nut before removing so you can spin it back to exactly where it was.
My go to product, plain black silicone, not high heat version.
On the rear covers, Three bond sealant.
Should be a smear under the nut as well but many we remove have none.Quote:

Any negatives to using permatex "The Right Stuff" for that same job?
^ For rear cover? While we've tried several different silicones with poor results, have not tried The Right Stuff.
