I have not encountered what's described in in the post or quote above so either your frame of reference is skewed (ie. don't blame others for one's "reality"/position) or you need to find somewhere else to work.

Been through five companies multinational to small and have not encountered that type of environment (lack of opportunity, requirement for special last name, special relationships) - so yes, maybe time to move on.
