Ya that's for the heater I believe. Since the car is air cooled it uses exhaust heat for the heating system.

and then is there another air/air heat exchanger? or does that hot air exhaust right into the cabin?

better hope you never get a crack or leak in the headers.

I had a 73 super beetle - used exhaust pipe more or less for heat and had a stand alone gas heater - maybe these work a similar way? It was always in the back of my mind tho

Exhaust gas runs through a heat exchange that has fresh cabin air flowing through it. Though I can understand based on the ancestral lineage why you may assume it's pumping deadly gas at people.

Post whatever is on your mind!!

Stopped at a friend’s this afternoon for a beverage, get out of the car and look up to see about a million starlings that had been eating grapes from the vineyard next door. Needless to say I had to wash the car in the fantastic 9 degree weather this evening. Warming up with a delicious 8.5% limited edition beer now!

    Correction, 5 degrees....WTF!

Attended a mini-class reunion downtown last night in lieu of the full 1999 Homecoming Weekend as I couldn't get away for the whole weekend - fun meeting up with a small group of classmates (mostly 20 years later for this particular small group). One person commented that she wasn't sure we'd all be recognizable in a noisy, downtown bar after all that time but turns out we haven't changed that much except for a few more pounds and grey hair. Out of 180 in the class we've lost 2 classmates over the years.

Oh what joy! Spent a few hours today running a network cable from the basement to the 2nd floor. Crimped on the connectors, test the connection with my signal tester. Only to see 1 of the 8 wires is showing a miss. OK, must be one of the wires in the connector that is the problem. Ended up redoing both connections. Nope, still showing wire number 6 is dead. Fuck it! Beer time... Now I have to re-run a new cable, damn it!
