    Moving a lally column

Doing a basement reno and the lally column is in a pretty shitty spot. Who do I consult to find out if I can move it? I am looking to move it about 20" toward the centre of the house.

Looking for a professional engineer? Or just some friendly preliminary advice?

I’ve never heard the term “lally column”, but I assume you mean one of these?

Do you have the original building permit drawings for your house? How old is the house?
Obtaining the existing drawings would be my first step in doing anything structural to the house. Obtain them from the City through the freedom of information act. Just fill out the form and they give you the drawings for a nominal fee and the cost of photocopying.

I did exactly what you are proposing during my basement reno last summer.

You can see the ^ original location of this post as a little round dot in the bottom left corner of the pic. Moved it over a few feet along the length of the beam to a new location with a new footing and new post.
