Thread: 6 hour highway drive in the old fox... what tools should I bring?

    Chewing gum - tin foil - couple of bobby pins - duct tape and some electrical tape for the first aid kit and sometimes not being too tidy helps, once started the fox with a pop can from the back seat

    If you run into issues, contact Ted at Mustang Direct in St Constant , south Shore Quebec just south of Montreal over the Mercier bridge

    He is a good friend of Joe DaSilva and runs a pretty good shop in that province

    Oh, and get ready for a roller coaster of a ride with the never ending road construction, wear a mouth guard

    I still have the original TFI with 207,000km.

    Took it off years ago and there was a dime size amount of some dried out white stuff.
    I coated the whole back side with PC heat sink paste.

    All this TFI talk has me worried. I'm pretty sure the one on my car is still the original. Can they fail while the car is running?

    A friend had a 87 Cougar XR7 5.0 V-8 and the TFI died while on the 401 roughly back in 89-90.
    No warning signs,just died and the engine cut out.
    Had to get a tow truck.

    I have yet to encounter the TFI failure. Not saying it doesn’t happen, but neither my 90 or my 94 (both original TFIs and pushing 300k) have had failures.

    Chrysler slant-6 ballast resistors on the other hand..... we use to carry a six-pack of those.

    Same here... never replaced one.

    Those stupid coil packs on the Corsica, Berretta 3.1 or 2.8 V6's however... what kind of idiot puts coil packs under an exhaust header like that?

    Ford relocated the TFI off the distributor for the 94-95 Mustangs.

    TFI relocation kits are available for the foxbody.

    Oddly enough, while most never experience a TFI issue, others will eat two or more over their lifetime.
    When it comes to replacements, OEM Ford has always been the best choice.
