I have a ASUS ROG edition. happy with performance but displeased with the weekness of the case, mostly in the hinge and screen surround area. was "fixed" once under warranty and the second time I glued it together with super glue.

iirc mine was in the 1500 range about a year ago.

+1 for a Lenovo. If you don't need a brand new one, you can usually find decent deals on off lease units.

Lenovo Thinkpad is what I use at work and at home for Laptops. I have a Mac Mini for a desktop computer.

Agreed on Lenovo think pad. They are over a grand, but I get mine every 3-4 years for around 400 tax in used from techsource. i7 and plenty of hp for what I do.

You should be able to get a decent machine for about $700 with BF deals given what you want to use it for. I'd look at Dell Inspiron (direct) for sales or Lenovo if you can get a Thinkpad at a good price although the Thinkpads are generally geared more for business. I've had Thinkpads at work for the past 10+ years (currently on an X1 Carbon) but on our 4th Dell at home (3 are still working with the oldest from around 2006 - wife uses the oldest for workout tracking). My newest personal use Dell Inspiron is about 3 years old I think and works fine (upgraded video card, etc).
