I'm not a spirits drinker, but watching the variety of Whiskey's etc. on this thread are tempting me to try a few. Quite a variety now, it's not your dad's whiskey anymore.
^^ some of that stuff might be your Mom's whisky though lol.
Most of the new ones are simply your Dad's whisky with sugar/syrup/flavouring added to them. Pretty much anything new out there now that is "spiced", or honey, or vanilla, or maple, or this apple one, are all just with additives. Some taste nice. This apple one isn't too bad. The Forty Creek "Spike" is actually really good with Coke. Crown do the best maple IMO. Knob Creek and Canadian Club are far too sweet. They are a nice way for the distillers to increase share since they are nearly all incremental sales - regular whisky drinkers won't replace their standards with them but they will attract current non-whisky drinkers to the category.
If you are looking for decent drams that have some unique flavour, look for single malt scotch or other whisky that is matured in specific casks that add flavour notes. Collingwood matured in Maple wood casks and The Balvenie Caribbean Cask matured in old Rum casks are two I highly recommend.
