I used Dupli-Color Trim and Bumper paint with great results.
I have used the SEM product previously with great results. Purchased at a local Napa even after was told it was no longer readily available/ hard to get
The only things I can see that make SEM trim paint special are that it doesn't require a primer(debatable) and that it is flexible, but the mirror isn't a piece that flexes. I can't see how trim paint is any more durable than any other rattle can car paint, meaning I don't know how they get away without recommending a clear coat.
If you sand it and prime it, you should be able to use any kind of (compatible with the primer) paint you want. I've seen some painted to match the car. A clear coat, matte or gloss, on top would help with maximum durability.
Pretty sure the factory finish is satin as the SEM stuff is.
I don’t think the factory used a clear coat on top
