    Victor Jr Head Build Up - looking for thoughts from experienced folks

    Bought a new pair of 77179 Victor Jrs - from PSP last week- with valves, no hardware. 60 cc chamber,210 cc Intake ports; 75cc exhaust. 2.05"/1.60" SS valves installed and seated.

    Motor is 333 cid stock block, internally balanced, Eagle forged crank JE pistons, ARP studded, 2 girdles, ATI alum damper, Crane big $ hydr roller lifters, Kooks 1-7/8 ceramic headers.
    Comp Cam is mech/hydr 236*/248* @ .050" .589" lift with 1.72 Ford alu roller rockers.

    Will be flowed on PSP's bench, then cleaned up an ported, flowed again and cc'd.
    Deciding if its worth measuring all 16 ports before and after. Also will be getting the matching Victor Jr carb manifold opened up more and also port matched. Fuel distribution is not nice on #1 and #8, despite already having been cleaned up. Pro Systems 780 road race carb will go back to Patrick for rebuild/new fuel curve once head flow is finalized.

    Heads will be ARP stud mounted; 11:1 comp ratio, some kind of conventional gasket; unless Paul says wire loc; which I doubt.

    Hardware: 10* titanium locks and retainers, beehive springs
    Rockers will be either existing Ford Racing 1.72 with a stud girdle and guide plates on 7/16" studs; r will go to T&D shaft rockers - 1.75/1.75.....money allowing.

    Thoughts and advice from those with Victor Jr and high end head / valvetrain experience only pls.

    Motor is for road course and street with 4.10 gear, max power 6500 rpm or less, I hope. Pulls to 7000 now, with iron Dart heads, max hp was at 6000 with 1-5/8" Mac headers previously.
    Expected to make app 40 hp more than now (currently app 400 rwhp) carbed, naturally aspirated; plus lose 40 lbs in weight. Thx for reading. Will post pics - this will become a mini build.

    Update: Props to Smitty at Edelbrock in California - been communicating with him about the head build, they are going to exchange @ n/c from the new casting run in June.

    Here's the details: Had the heads flowed and cc'd at PSP; found the intake to flatline from .500" and up at 265 cfm, app 30 cfm below spec. Exhaust was fine. A few of the valve guides are also not centred in the bowl bosses, which Paul says is pretty typical.

    So rather than take the chance; I asked Smitty if this was acceptable, and he offered to do an exchange for me from the new casting run in June. I think they have new tooling and the old ones have exhibited some core shift. This would be a real problem with a cnc ported head, as the program usually takes a perfect casting as the master. Hand porting would likely get around that problem, but why take a chance, especially with so much $ involved ? Boxes show a production date of Feb 2014.

    Side note - Edelbrock may build my heads with smaller valve guides so I can run 8mm valve stems rather than sleeving down the stock size ones. With some luck, maybe they can also supply (at extra $) Ti or at least hollow valves - I want to knock off at least 50 g per cyl of moving mass and the valve is the best place to start - especially the intake, as it is almost 30% heavier than the exhaust. I measured all the head dimensions and weighed the valves to get a baseline. Intake 118.0 g ; Exhaust 93.8 g

    Looks like Eddy needs to step up their quality control inspections. Whats fluffed off as core shift, not acceptable on higher end cylinder head casting. Will they produce the jam your looking for after being reworked, should to it without breaking a sweat.
    H/P gain on the road course will be cool but real gain n perma grin will come from the reduced nose wt. Will also be a ton less fuel fussy re: deto with the alum vs iron heads.
    Nice purchase, keep us up to speed.

    stats & great pics above...side note...

    the master looks pretty sophisticated in those glasses...

    A Victor Jr head can be made to run like a raped ape. I sent my Kijiji bought set to Jeff at Modern Cylinder Head in Detroit to work his magic.
    Got 338 @ .700" Intake and 230 ish @ .700" Exhaust

    My combo made 700+ at 7100

    those are some really big numbers for a stock exhaust port floor height and standard 20* valve angle

    sorry to post this, but the Modern Cyl website shows that Jeff passed away last July. His brother now runs it. RIP, sad and too young.
