    Proper torque

Don't forget to torque your lug nuts properly.

Was funny, they were talking about this on the radio this evening, and the radio hosts had no idea how to check for "proper torque". They were talking about how the tire "monitors" should check for that

When torquing your wheels, first nut or even two should be taken well beyond snug but not to full torque. What happens if you don't, odd time you'll actually jam the wheel / rotor (if it's slip on style) a hair sideways giving you a false full torque reading. A short distance down the road, wheel centers and your left with loose wheel nuts.

This happened to me this year on the van. Was shocked since it was a first and I've torqued a few wheels in my day.

^By the looks of it that wheel was over-torqued, a loose wheel would be shaking long before coming off, that one was dead steady, then suddenly shook violently-right as you see lugs go flying. I'd bet the studs were stretched and snapped, seen it before.

We continue to get a good number in that have been tightened to the max with an impact.

The driver must have known something wasn't right. They had their hazard lights on before the wheel let go. Bolts came loose followed by front end vibration then...

They were driving with their hazard lights on pre-failure - wonder why?
