Ol Paint did something similar earlier this year and it turned out to be the alternator and camshaft position sensors. What codes did you get when you scanned it?
You probably could buy the lock outs. Check out the video on the explanation of the Phazers knock etc...

Car starts bucking, missing, and losing power and you don't know what's causing it .....not sure I'm driving all the way home and potentially wrecking the engine.

I would suspect the timing control solenoids rather than the phasers themselves.

It's had some concerning valve train noises on start up after oil changes for some time now. Hard to say if it's related or not until pulled down.
