I am looking at trading in my 2016 F150 for a 2018.

One of the options is the new 10 speed transmission. Ian thinking of ticking off that box along with 3.73 gears for towing.

Does anyone have one of these in their truck? What are your thoughts? Good or bad.

if you get the ecoboost you may want to look into an extended warranty as I know a few people that have had the turbos die outside of warranty and they are not cheap at all to replace. the kind of repair bill that makes you want to push the truck off a cliff and call it in stolen.

I have the 5L in my current truck and like it a lot. Because I pull some weight once in a while long distances, I don't think I will get anything other than the V8.

Solid choice coupled to new trans.

We had both an Ecoboost and a 5 litre at the same time. The V-8 is unquestionably the better solution.
FYI We had a 2005 F-150 (sold at 390000 KM) a 2016 F-150 Supercab 5-litre(still have it), a 2016 Crewcab ecoboost (since replaced with a 2017 Crewcab 5-litre), and later this week we have a 2017 F-250 6.2 L coming. We also have a 2013 Ford F-450 dump truck.

As you can see we kind of like Ford Trucks!

The Ecoboost motors are revised and I suggest you take one out for a boot before making your final decision. I've never had the 3.5L EB but I did have a 2.7L EB and I will tell you (and I'm sure people are sick of me saying so) but that thing hauled ass. It was super peppy and a lot of fun. My current 5.0L feels a bit sluggish by comparison. The new EB motors now have direct and port injection, ensuring that the valves are getting washed down by fuel and avoiding that crusty valve smoke issue they had previous to 2017.

I've heard mixed reviews on the 10spd... That it seems to hunt gears a bit on inclines, but I'm sure there will be software updates to address this.

My current F150 has 3.31 gears and it does cause the transmission to hunt a lot on inclines.
On my trip to Texas hauling an enclosed trailer with a 3500 lb car I will guess we were in third gear for at least a third of the trip (6 sp tranny).

Im hoping with a 3.73 gear and the 10 sp the hauling capability will be better.

I cannot believe my 2016 came with tow haul package and a 3.31 gear and no trailer control hookup!

Don't think you need the 3.73 with the new 10 speed, although that being said I've heard the 5.0 lacks in TQ so maybe...

I opted for the 3.27 in mine and it's perfect pulling the car, I never even need to use Tow/Haul mode, I know the 5.7L is more torquey (is that a word?) but just thought I'd put my thoughts out there anyways :)

All 2018 F150 get the 10 speed with 5.0 or 3.5 ecoboost and 2.7 ecoboost, you don't have a choice. To get 3.73 in anything other than XL requires heavy duty payload pkg. Then you are limited on which options you can get because of the max payload wheels. 13000 lbs towing with 3.5 ecoboost, 3.55 gears and 20" wheels.

I can tell you that my brothers '17 XL supercab STX 4x4 with the 5.0 and 3.73 hauls ass..

Just an FYI Kev, I heard the 10 speed hunts quite a bit as well and “never really gets all 10 gears”. Heard that from a Ford trans tech when I asked if they were any good, my uncle was buying one at that time. He also told me the ecoboosts are constantly in with engine issues, so yea I’d stick with the 5.0 as well.

I'm looking at an XLT SuperCrew 4X4 also.

Are the 10 speed new this year?

10 speed debuted in 2017 f150 3.5 ecoboost.

Just checked on ford.ca and looks like you can get 3.73 on XLT without max payload with the 5.0 and 2.7 ecoboost. I've only been looking at 3.5 ecoboost that why I thought you couldn't get the 3.73 without max payload.

Ya, new for ‘17, I’m not saying they’re a bad trans, but they appear to hunt a lot and this tech has had tons of them in with complaints, but it’s just how they are, nothing he can do. Maybe a controller update will be released to cure it, who knows.

I don’t have the ten speed in my 5.0 Sport I find the trans it it hunts as well. Mostly at low speed like in parking lot it will sometimes pop back and forth between first and second.

Not a deal breaker. But the down shifts can be savage with the tow/haul or sport mode selected

Buddy is a Ford tech and says the Ecoboost trucks keep him well paid and in overtime, even newer ones.

10spd is apparently a fairly robust "looking" unit but it's always looking for a gear.

I've never owned anything more than 6-spds, but perhaps there is just a transition period for the driver when driving a 10-spd transmission. With an old 4-spd it was very obvious which gear the vehicle should be in at what time, and small changes in grade, driver input, etc, wouldn't affect it. With a 10-spd, the driving circumstances that are ideal for a given gear are much smaller. If you have a 10-spd and it isn't shifting all the time, then what's the point? I can't imagine the shifts are rough or it's shifting 3 gears at a time, so a change from 6th to 7th gear would be barely discernible unless you're consciously paying attention to it.

Just my thoughts....till I drive one.

I have a 2016 5.0 with 3.31 gears. No issues pulling a trailer with tons of power and decent on gas. Just passed 18 months of ownership and 100% happy with no issues whatsoever.
