I'm thinking about upgrading the rear wheels on the 97 cobra to 17 x 10.5, what size tire what be best?
Would 305 be the best fit?
Are 315's too big?

I'm looking on line, and there doesn't seem to be too many 305 options, unless I want a mudder tire lol.

Your choices are going to be 285/40R17 or 315/35R17. Depending on the brand and model of tire, the 315 would likely require some fender lip rolling.

I have 315's on both mine and I think they are perfect, however I like a little bulge so...

Anyways, these are both 17x10.5 with 315's These are DSG3's (which are an amazing tire btw...but pricey now days) which run a little wider than say, a Nitto or Sumitomo

What size is the tire in the background?

with a 10.5 and a 315 rear tire, you will need to remove the quad shocks on the older SN95's...which means you will need to upgrade the control arms....well atleast that's what I told my wife at the time when I upgraded.....

I'm hoping to not have to roll the fenders ☹️

The car already has MM adjustable lower control arms, quads are still in place though.

From the American Muscle web site regarding the 17 x 10.5 wheel size:

Recommended Tire Size:
315-35-17 - 1994-1998 Mustang
315-35-17 - 1999-2004 Mustang

no, there is lots of room on the 99-2004 SN95's as they already have a flare built into the fenders, I'm not 100% sure on the clearance on the earlier SN's but I believe they will fit without rolling...again could depend on the tire as well...like mentioned the goodyears 315 vs. sumitomo 315 is 1/2" in tread width, I've had both and measured them...also measured the Nitto 315 when Not4you had his Mach, he had same size wheels as me...and they were 1/4" narrower than the goodyear F1's...

trying to think who has 315's on here with an SN95 that could chime in...there must be somebody...lol

what springs on your car OP?

A 285/40-17 will fit just fine on the 10.5 wide wheel. Thats what Im running on mine. No fender rolling.

Bilsteins

That would be my suggestion too over the 315. Continental offers that size in their very good Extreme Contact Sport.

depends what type of look you are going for...if you like a tire bulge, do the 315's, I don't think you'll need to roll...real doesn't look that low from that angle shot anyways..

if you want the tire to have a stretch look then go for a smaller size or if you want it to be lined up with the rim with no stretch or no bulge then go with something in the middle perhaps...

I had 10”rears on my jellybean Cobra with 285s and they were very slightly stretched, but close to flat. I forget the brand though, had pics but photobucket, so can’t get them, lol.

not on a sn95 but here's nitto's DR 315/35/17 on a 10" rim https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180112/83e260a8a3c072460aa64632a5e061e4.jpg

I had 315’s on a 10.5 cobra replica...I removed the quads and didn’t have to roll the fender, and the car is lowered on steeda sport springs....96 GT

Don’t have those wheels anymore, or the computer those pics were on.

Should be lots of room with quads off and 315's (squared sidewall like Nitto) on a 10.5.

My 95 hits with 27” tall 285 Nittos on 10.5” Salween reps. I have mildly rolled fender lips.

yes but you don't use springs in your car so it sits on the ground to start with LOL

jk

actually all joking aside, you probably have one of the nicest stances I've seen on that body style...

I had 315's on my 94 GT on a 17x10.5 wheel. It was lowered on Sportlines. I had to roll the fenders but it looked nice ;)

And what ride height? I could see using that size on a stock 4x4 but anything lowered would need some work unless they were only fitted to sit in the garage, lol.

I have Saleen SC replica's 17x10's with Nitto 315's on the rear with Bilsteins & H&R's no issues, did not have to roll the fenders on a '96 Cobra.
