Greatest U.S.A. racer ever has passed at age 86:

Here he is in the cockpit of the Ford GT-40:

He was the first racer to ever do this on the victory podium, Le Mans 1967 after winning in the GT-40 with A.J. Foyt ... great shot captured by a Life Magazine photographer ... just think, 24 hrs in a brute like a GT-40 with only 2 drivers!

Driver, engineer, builder, team owner, he did it all in so many categories. This is the guy that other racers including A.J Foyt and Mario Andretti looked up to.

After the great life he led, I don’t think 86 is a bad age to die at, rip to one of racing’s true talents.

When Car & Driver ran it's famous "Gurney for President" campaign, I would have voted for him.
May he rest in peace.
