Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government is fighting some Canadian veterans in court because they are asking for more than the federal government can afford.

"Why are we still fighting certain veterans groups in court? Because they're asking for more than we are able to give right now," Trudeau said, answering a question from a veteran, who said he lost his leg to an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan, during a town hall meeting on Thursday evening in Edmonton.

Quick google search shows that those numbers are grossly inflated...

Trudeaus have never been very supportive of our armed forces. Harper bears some blame also.
As far as I'm concerned, you serve, get injured and we look after you.
But it makes better headlines and selfies to hand out millions to foreign countries.
Maybe take it from the Aga Khans money.

I don't like Trudeau but was this list/data verified or taken at face value? Is the source credible? I cannot see the whole tweet so not sure if the source of information is listed below. It isn't helpful to spread false information.

Could be the Russian bots again? They have been busy this week promoting the Nunez memo to try to get people to believe without fact checking.

That said, this move by this Liberal government to go to court with them (I know Harper had a poor track record in this area also but didn't payout anywhere near as much to external parties as JT) or deny payment request to veterans while monies are squandered away on any number of internal/external payouts is fucked up.

Oh and I don't remember being asked if I'm cool with my tax dollars being handed out willy nilly. Shouldn't there be a vote/plebiscite?

That's typically an election and we got what "we" voted for....both in Ontario and federally, unfortunately. At least Harper only gave a tax break to the Clinton Foundation, not direct cash.

This site seems to have a more reasonable list.

Looks like its about $5 to $5.5 billion in 2016.

What really burns my ass... A Tailban fighter gets a back door deal of $10.5 million, because our lovely PM says it could have cost the taxpayers $30-40 million to fight that POS in court. But yet has no problem throwing Billions around like it's nothing. Mean while veterans who (free willing) fought for our country and put their lives on the line to protect us, our government is fighting them in court. What the fuck is wrong with this picture???
I would love to know how much this court battle is costing the taxpayers?!?!
