Ottawa announces $189-million to extend employment insurance for seasonal workers

Seasonal workers in certain areas of the country will get up to five more weeks of employment insurance benefits under a $189 million pilot project announced Monday by Ottawa.

Jean-Yves Duclos, the minister of Families, Children and Social Development, made the announcement at a fisheries plant in Escuminac, N.B., as other Liberals touted the project in Atlantic Canada and in Quebec.

An estimated 51,500 workers — in parts of Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Yukon — will benefit from the extra weeks of employment insurance.

“We know that some seasonal workers have long struggled to find sufficient hours of work to qualify for enough EI benefits to carry them through the off-season,” said Duclos.

“Economic diversification and economic development are key to finding long-term solutions to help seasonal workers, but our government also understands that this is a pressing issue that requires short-term actions.”

Duclos said up to five more weeks will be provided to eligible workers in seasonal industries in 13 regions who start a benefit period between Aug. 5, 2018 and May 30 2020.

Those economic regions include eastern and western Nova Scotia, Madawaska—Charlotte in New Brunswick, central Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador, excluding St. John’s, N.L.

“This means families will have more support to help them go through the winter. Today’s announcement will also help close the income gap and help give individuals and families the support they need when they need it most,” said Duclos.

The Liberals currently hold every seat in Atlantic Canada and the lone Yukon seat, and hope to make gains in Quebec in a federal election scheduled for October 2019.

The government said it was targeting areas with higher proportions of seasonal claimants to the total labour force and higher than average employment insurance unemployment rates in 2017.

The federal government said it would also provide up to $41 million over two years to all provinces and territories through labour market development agreements to provide skills training, wage subsidies and employment supports for workers in seasonal industries.

Ottawa said the funding was part of a budget commitment to provide $230 million to help workers in seasonal industries.

Not thrilled that our EI premiums help supplement their salary. If you are in a "seasonal work" industry, should your salary during the season not be sufficient to carry you through the entire year? Maybe we should pay cod fishermen more money. So the price of cod goes up a bit. Better than my EI premium going up.

I'm going to be even less thrilled once they lower the bar so much that even teachers will be able to claim EI during the "off season".

This is just another example of the marxist trudeau. What you want is equality of opportunity where everyone has the same opportunity. Now trudeau and his handlers want equality of outcome which means the lazy will have the same standard of life as the hard working. <- not saying seasonal work is for the lazy here.

It’s all happening and we are witnessing the end of western civilization.

^^I didn't see that particular story which was likely an anomaly but what kind of job did he have that the basic income pilot payment would be a better option than employment income (I assume some of the payment would be taxable also)?

UBI is an interesting concept but I haven’t grasped the system entirely. There would be savings in revamping the welfare system but not enough to offer UBI for everyone. Feels like the concept would work if money was literally free?

But you are right, this is classic vote buying.

I can’t say about teachers but educational assistance people do get EI. Bough they make a lot less than teachers

Unfortunately this has been going on for decades, the government always had a different set of criteria for the east coast.

Liberals were shilling for votes back in 2016 with this plan.

if cod fishing, snow shoveling, interpretive dancing doesn't earn enough to satisfy your desired standard of living, it's time to drop your expectations or get a better paying job.

You get paid to do things you wouldn't otherwise do, that's why it's called work.

I was a talented, often published globe trotting photographer for a decade. It was fun but didn't cover the bills. I now work at a much less exciting job for more money. Problem solved.

Exactly that.

Don't underestimate the entitlement people have. Kids grew up having EVERYTHING they needed and even wanted, including stupid $1000 cell phones. It's at the point where they think it's everyone's fault that they don't have the same money their parents have. They expect to make a 6 figure salary cutting grass for 5 months of the year, and expect to be able to buy a million dollar home or condo in the city - everything for free and they don't give a F who pays for it - right now the ENEMY are middle-aged christian white heterosexual workaholic men. This is why there's a socialist/communist movement in the liberals/NDP these days. Politicians who are owned by Marxists (like trudeau) are capitalizing on the total stupidity of this generation of voters. And from what I'm reading, Canada's stupidity knows no bounds. It's pretty bad. Keep in mind it was written in black and white, the marxists will infiltrate our schools to literally dumb down populations.

People who vote for trudeau think they are fighting their enemies (that would be you and I). They want to take from people who work. Remember marxism is about equality of outcome, that means EVERYONE IS POOR AS FUCK. Where traditional liberals (and Canada's right to an extent) are about equality of opportunity - that means ANYONE regardless of race, religion, culture, sex, sexual preference has THE SAME opportunity to work like a fucking dog to become rich. <- this is what we should strive for, fuck racism, we're all pink on the inside - let's just all be happy but work for it.

In other words. You have a sweet ass new Mustang GT350R - you work your damn ass off and save up for a dream ride. Trudeau will take that car from you, sell it and buy you and 50 others a rusted out old Toyota Tercel. THERE that's equality of outcome... everyone's unhappy no matter how little or how hard you work. <- That's where the West is heading if we do not stand up to the loud moron snowflake and their marxist governments.

What we are on the verge of loosing here, folks, is our freedom to leverage capitalism and live nice comfortable lives due to hard work. We may end up having to fight on the streets and risk it all to save the country for our kids. I'm ready for a fight, as soon as it has to happen. I will join the revolution.
