View Full Version : Notch value questions

Hey guys, I am planning on selling it eventually but it won’t be a $5,000 notch. But to maximize value I want it to be a true and reliable turn-key car.

So I may strip the paint and redo it. There’s no rust but the paint isn’t perfect. I’m also going to put the 3.73’s in it because the stock gears suck.

Now I have a good set of Trickflow heads. I can sell them for around $1400 or install them and sell the GT40’s instead? Would better heads add value? Remember this notch has good parts like the z-spec FRPPP T5, Max motorsports stuff, Cobra brakes front and back, Tubular intake, etc...

Honestly, with the market so hot for notches i'd sell it as is. I don't think you'll recoup your time, effort and cost to paint and install the heads.
Also, people want to see original paint, painting the car may actually decrease the value.

Ack previous owner got it painted 18 years ago. No rust but faded and uncared for was the reason. Plus they painted the mirrors and moldings shiny which shouldn't be. If I paint it again, I will strip it down to bare metal and can take pics, videos of the metal being clean. But the body has all the correct anti-theft decals so they didn't paint over anything like that at least. Maybe I can do simple paint corrections and get the hood painted to match at least.

As it stands, it's not perfect paint (probably 6.5/10) but the interior I'd argue is 10/10, underside is 8/10, engine bay is close to 8/10... Has a lot of rare, hard to find or expensive parts like the tubular intake and Cobra calipers, Z-spec T5, etc... It's not a mint low mile original coupe that would go for 25k or more USD but close to a perfect turn-key show car with just 112,000km that is not only reliable but can handle track days and have fun.

I need to take a detailed video of the thing (but the Cobra is on the lift right now) to send to a few guys in the USA. Looks like I'm at anywhere from 18 to 21k (CAD) for this car right now. I do want to fix the oil leak and change the gear (at a minimum) to make it a true turn-key car. I want to make sure the new owner is more than happy with it. But time will tell... who knows. Better to start high (and ask for higher price) than start low and change it upwards later. :D

Are fox's worth that much now....?

meh... hit or miss.

Pure original mint no or low mile foxes are going for real good money. Especially notchbacks with black or grey interiors (factory 5.0/T5 cars).

I don't care to sit on my not-as-mint notch for a while.

I've seen high dollar fox's that have been hoarded by a dealer up their in price - pretty rare tho - hard to believe they sold so many of them - bought one '90 paid $13,500 was a great trouble free car

They didn't produce that many tho... I mean yeah if you tally the numbers for 79 to 93, 5.0 and 2.3... sure. But there are versions that are in the single digits in terms of production runs and coupes especially were never really desirable back then, they sucked with bad seats, ugly boxy looking 2 door sedans and cheap looking compared to the GT hatch (that was the mentality).

Fast forward 25+ years of drag racing, crashes, real bad modifications, aero-nose swaps (for the pre-86), used in the rust belt, etc... Not a whole lot left for those wanting a trouble free clean example. Still some good deals out there I'm sure doesn't happen often.

new car sales very low back then - my '79 was sold new for around $10,000 - in '90 $13,500 - very odd I really don't know how people afford new ones now - in 1990 I made $21/hour in a warehouse now cars are 50+ and I think wages haven't changed much...?

Paid $16,800 for my 90 brand new out the door, with inflation today it would cost $32,843.80. I would take that much for it now.... :)

21 bucks an hour in 1990 is pretty good! That's 72k/year in today's money.

My first real job was 5 bucks an hour in the late 90's lol

But yeah a new GT is much more expensive than a foxbody was (with inflation correction) but you do get a LOT more car too. Twice the power, 10x the comfort, 10x the handling and braking...

There are some real sweet foxes in this group, FoxRod's is no exception! I also very much dig that mint white coupe, although I'm scared to breath near it lol

needless to say that warehouse isn't there anymore...I made 5 and change at UPS when they had a small place on Martin Grove near Bethridge that was around '78 part-time funny how things have changed

I wish my notch was worth $21k.
Hell, I'd be happy if it was worth $5k.

Just be prepared to go thru all the tire kickers, low ballers and guys with $10g's cash in hand thinking you'll sell cheap.
Now it was a couple years ago but when I sold my coupe I was lucky to get a little over a 1/4 of what was put into it.

I dunno.. I see guys ask way too much money for a fox.

I’d pay $20k for a original notch with low miles.. but something that’s been repainted, aftermarket parts, multiple owners. Nah.. it’s a fox. I think in another 5-10 yrs they will shoot right up in value. I feel like Barret Jackson made every fox owner think they’re sitting on a gold mine.

But hey.. it’s worth what someone will pay for it.. list it for $20k.

I wouldn’t paint it. You’ll have a hard time getting your money out of it. People pay top dollar for original paint super clean cars. I had a coupe that sold for over 20k But was 99.98% original. (Tires, plugs and wires weren’t original. That’s it.). Your coupe also isn’t low kms. Just put it back to stock, put some new trim on. It’s worth low teens to the right buyer. Spending $6-8k on a good paint job is not going to make the car worth 20.

So I've decided the 3.73's are going in (unless someone wants to trade those for 3.55's), I'm going to do a proper paint correction and get the hood painted shiny black finally and of course fix the stupid oil pan that leaks. I'm not worried about the price once I'm really done with it, it will be one of the cleanest resto-mod foxes on the planet with quality and appropriate/popular mods lol, what sucks is I had someone offer 21k for it last year (Quebec guy). I emailed him and he already bought a car (a real classic) so that's a bummer.

Let's not forget, yeah it's not an OEM mint... but:

The Cobra is getting on my nerves. I think I may just part out the project to get out of it and make room. I need to put the notch on the hoist.

No one knows... I may only get best offer of 10k for my notch LOL Which in that case, it will just sit in my garage for another 4 years. LOL

My cousin paid 6 for his 86GT and it needed paint, new interior, brakes and a few things... He had the budget to fix it and I think he's in for 12k all said and done at this point.

What do you realistically want for the coupe?

stangstevers
08-23-2018, 08:51 AM
As it sits currently, very bottom line for me would be no less than 19. I don't care if I own it for another 4 years lol Which may be the case - it costs nothing to own really.

Wow you should have taken that $21k because that person is nuts. I’ve looked your car over. It’s nice. But top dollar cars are original with original paint. A coupe with 103k sold for 18.5 with original paint and it was clean! I almost bought it but bought a black on black coupe with 66k all original (I’m talking only spark plugs and wires weren’t original) To me that’s still not low kms. Your floors are painted as well right? That’s a massive turn off to me. Like someone else said, you would have to find someone else with the exact same tastes as you for a mild modded car. You can ask 20 for it but like you said, you’ll be keeping it for another 4 years.

The old saying "It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for"... is so true.

At 10k, I will either gut it and sell the shell as a roller or I could in theory set it on fire or do something to destroy it in a blaze of glory at my cousin's farm... to hit video views on Youtube to make up for the notch "value" LOL A million views is still under 10 grand CAD though - if I could guarantee 3 million views, I would surely do it though - not sure how I'd kill it Maybe take it offroad for a few rounds, see how tough it is, run it without oil... drop the clutch with slicks at 7k??? Then set it on fire, maybe crush it who knows... would be fun and interesting concept of making money. Holding onto it is probably what I'd end up doing TBH... Gutting is a lot of work and my hoist is occupied.

Another idea I had was to sell 200 $100 tickets or 100 $200 tickets and give someone a chance at getting the car for next to nothing. But it's not technically legal to do in Ontario.

I think so, I did work in marketing for a long time and my site gets 100k visits a month lol

Edit: For fun I will call the government and see what's up with that. Maybe I can hold off and do some sort of 50/50 with SickKids or something next year? Who knows, I'm all over the place (what else is new lol). I do have someone from the US coming over this weekend and I have to call another person. I think once I put it on the market, I will ignore Canada completely and put it in Vermont at a family's farm so people can go and check it out without having to pass the border...

What's done to yours

stangstevers
08-27-2018, 07:25 AM
It's certainly not a 400+HP fox for sure lol But it's been blown up and rebuilt... all new sensors, brake lines, etc... All new parts, right down to the stupid nearly $400 TAB/TAD solenoids to get SMOG working legit. It's probably one of the most dependable foxes out there. I didn't want to dick around with this car. The goal was to get the brakes, suspension and body for whatever I wanted to throw at it... It's a good car to add good HP to, I see too many 4 lug, shit brake foxes out there with near 500HP. LOL. This one works like new, no shakes, no tire rub, no stupid rattles... Real tight car. Those who rode in it all say the same.

I have to check but I think I'm the 2nd owner, previous owner didn't really do a good job at preserving the thing even with (what I think are) low KMs @ 112k. This is also a factory delete car, no options. Not even the pin stripe (according to the door tag).

As far as mods go, my vision was "stock'ish" but any part added had to be top quality and/or hard to find pieces.

Engine/Drivetrain:
- Tubular GT40 (early "made in Japan" version) upper and real Ford Racing lower (not explorer)
- 3 Bar GT40 heads (from a Lightning, not an Explorer)
- Almighty B303
- 24 pound injectors
(At first I wanted to replicate the 93 Cobra engine, down to the valve covers and I do have an actual 93 Cobra intake (not chinese version) but found a tubular so...)
- Ford Racing Z-spec T5
- Aluminum driveshaft
- 3G upgrade
- A9L MAFS conversion
- 75mm? MAF, TB and spacer
- Aluminum rad
- Electric fan hidden in stock shroud to make it look stock (not the cheapo version, also has proper 70amp circuit that starts at 190 degrees)
- BBK long tube headers, BBK 2 catted H-pipe and Flowmasters and Flowmaster tails
- 255LPH pump

Suspension wise, it has:
- Maximum Motorsports tubular K-member
- Max Motorsports reverse offset tubular control arms
- Max Motorsports coilover kit up front
- Bilstein struts (those damn things cost over $1000)
- Max Motorsports strut tower brace
- Max Motorsports solid steering shaft
- Max Motorsports solid rack bushings
- Max Motorsports adjustable lower control arms
- KYB rear shocks (non adjustable)
- FRPP upper control arms
- Eibach Sportline springs in back (#275 coilovers in front)
- 2003 Cobra brakes front and back (with Cobra logo on front calipers, hard to find)
- New 18" wheels (275's and 245's new tires)

Body:
- Sport GT seats reupholstered
- Mach 1 lip
- Rolled rear fenders
- Full length sub frame connectors
- 2" (?) metal cowl hood painted satin black but will get it painted properly shortly
- New factory replacement headlights with real bright LED conversion

There's no rush and I haven't advertised it really. I feel like I need to fix some bugs before putting it on the market, so my priority are gears, paint correction, hood painted and oil leak. I don't think it will ever drop in value so it doesn't matter if I own it another 4 years. lol
