View Full Version : I feel like part of my life is fading away lol

I've been a die-hard foxbody guy for over 30 years LOL Ever since I was a little kid. I was obsessed with it, have a fairly decent website on the cars and to help the community.

BUT I've been feeling a little "blah" about them recently. Normally this is just a temporary thing, nothing a short rip in the notch can fix but not this time. Those temporary feelings have been happening more commonly and now turning full-time. I guess my father's passing really put a few things into perspective. I'd rather (build and) enjoy a sweet backyard with pool, BBQ, hottub with friends and family than busting knuckles in the garage alone, only to enjoy the ride alone again...

The S550 really was the last nail in that proverbial coffin. My notch is not a POS at all, it's one of the better foxes I've ever driven in my life, it's super tight and runs well but it still has that raw "old muscle car" feeling to it which I used to love. But I've been de-foxing the fox for 4 years and for what? Even with it being "top-notch", my wife hates it because it doesn't have AC or a radio (she thinks foxes are ugly, especially the notchbacks lol) and I feel like a jerk spending time in the garage and driving it alone.

Gutting the Cobra really started to hit me too. I'm not enjoying working on it. Just removing the rear seat belts (this has a full black interior in decent shape) with the stupid rusted bolt which killed a few Torx sockets got me so frustrated. I may even just call Ajax Auto Wreckers to take the body and watch it get crushed before the end of summer because I'm sick of seeing it and it's worth more in parts than a rusted out roller. I need the hoist to store my notch for a few years too until I find a buyer that loves what it is enough to spend good money for it.

Today I really enjoy the new Mustang, I get stupid good MPG when driving like a little bitch in the slow lane and I'm happy to do, I have nothing to prove in that car. I love the sound system, the large navigation screen, the seats and everything. The bonus is my family loves being in the thing too. I'm also not super paranoid about it because it's not a rare car at all... junk it, I'll get another... maybe a different color and more HP 2019 lol... OR go from Mustang to BMW or whatever so long as it feels great driving it. Honestly the S550 ruined foxes and any old car for me. I do appreciate them very much and love looking at them and helping their owners but I think I'm done owning foxes.

I do enjoy restoring interiors, maybe there's a side business there. But what foxbody owner will want to spend 2 grand or more on restoring an interior? We're not there yet with those cars but once they are, my OCD is for rent lol.

That's why I have a pile of parts on Kijiji right now (a lot more coming as I empty out my storage areas). LOL Even parting with some tools like my little 220v MIG welder and such... As my family would say "je suis tanner en tabarnak". lol

Clean your glasses Don cuz that's exactly what he said and you keep talking about how scared you are to pull the trigger on a new one, stop trying to feel sorry for the sn95 and move on cuz I can see it's what you really want to do.

BTW Don, how many kilometers did you put on the old girl so far this summer?

Only 3½ years ago I would have said to your face "I will never own any other Mustang but a Fox" today is another story and that's why we should not say the word "Never".

I get really fed up with my Fox sometimes......but i've driven new stangs....and I just don't get the same feeling from them like I do my fox. Mind you, i've never driven a gt350.....but i've driven a 2011 GT, 2008 GT500, 2006GT and NONE come close to putting the smile on my face that my fox does (note: when it's working....which thankfully it has this summer). I think i'd only get rid of my Fox, or if something happened to it i'd only consider a Termi.

LOL For sure... I told my wife, I will buy scale models if I want to build a car again LOL...

I will always appreciate classic cars like the fox and will always lend some help for the community and I may still own one for a while anyways. But it will be a garage ornament on the hoist collecting dust until it sells. But I am not on LMR.com anymore looking to waste my money. I hear they had to reduce the number of servers for that website since I stopped, traffic reduced by 40% lol

This summer? Zero. First time ever.

Perfect storm situation between the new cottage, the basement renovation, and a few minor issues with the car.
I knew going into this renovation that it would mean shelving the car, just didn't think it was going to be the entire summer. It will be back next summer.
Also means there is zero budget for a S550, now, or the foreseeable future. I'm not saying "never".

I've been contemplating putting it back to original colour as I need paint some or maybe all of the car. I do have an old skool T&R version of a saleen wing I would still be putting on it and a real Saleen front bumper that would be installed properly.

The thing with my colour now is a LOVE the pop!

I use to think cuda's duster's and road runners would be around forever - boy was I wrong - recently got my hands on an old Plymouth and all the 45year old flaws in those cars began to rear their ugly heads - but I loved it. Recently sold it to friend because I have too much on the go, but kinda regretting it - I've always loved the fox's and own two now that I picked up for a decent price in the 5 plus years ago - the pre '85's had their share of issues that I'm constantly reminded of just like the old mopars, but I learned from my mistake of thinking the old mopars will always be there for the picking and will never sell my fox's (my arm could be twisted if someone had too much coin) lol - also I get to cruise alone - the old lady doesn't like my Pace says her arse doesn't fit in the seat...lol - she doesn't understand what I see in them (to her the minivan is the cats ass) You can still get all those other things in life - I look at it this way - I don't owe anything on them - I have a nice place and large happy family - and everything is money in the bank if that time comes when and I need to cash in. But like my recent mopar I just sold, there was a good chance I will never get to do what I really wanted to do with it and instead of hoarding it I let it go to a good home and to someone who really enjoys it.

yes shit happens - I was out of cars for a long time now that the kids are older, but not any cheaper - I'm back into cars again, cant justify the price of a new one and don't want a nine year loan....made a deal with the wife Sunday is house day - I spend Sunday working on the house...better return on house investment. Cars are for fun!

Ya the newer cars are just too good of a car not to give it a fair chance they are way beyond what some of the die hard Fox guys think, imo right now a Fox is good to have as a second weekend car cuz owners either hardly drive them, are always working on them or are afraid to drive them anywhere no matter the weather.

Don't be left behind like you did when the Personal Computers came around.

The new 2018 5.0 with the PP and other go fast goodies are awesome, no way to compare to a Fox. When you want to get pushed hard in your seat they will do it readily, when you want to carve a corner, no issues, and when you want to stop it does it handily, along with creature comforts and great gas mileage.

They are really hard to beat.

Steve, maybe take a break from the Foxes for a few years, then think about getting back into a clean one that isn’t so much of a project. That’s sort of what I did, had the 89 5.0 project going that stalled out when I got busier with the new job, then I couldn’t pass up the great deal from a friend on the 07 GT that was nicely modded for track days ... so I sold the 89 and all the bits ai had collected for it.

I enjoyed the 07 for a few years, but decided that I wanted a Fox again so the 07 got sold to one of the track day groups that I coach with, it lives at Mosport now which is cool. Found the clean relatively low km SVO last summer, and have been enjoying the heck out of it. It’s nice, but not so nice that I’m afraid to drive it.

A path to consider ....

cheers
Ed

The blue notch I had was super clean and stock. I didn’t like it LOL

I can’t stand how they turn, stop and ride in stock form. I never owned a stock fox, if I do it will be a 93 Cobra or something like that 20,000km white coupe which I’d simply store and wait for values to increase, I wouldn’t drive it. My notch affords some fun to drive because I feel like I can turn, stop and the ride gives a lot more confidence than a stock foxbody lol

fast Ed
08-28-2018, 06:33 AM
Certainly doesn’t have to be a stock one, but also keep in mind that you don’t need to go crazy with the mods to get them to perform decently. Way back before all the tubular suspension bits and coil overs were available for these cars, with high quality bolt in stuff my old 87 was working well enough to do a 1:40 lap at Mosport on tires of that era, which is pretty respectable.

yup, foxes are like legos.

I think it's not fair to compare them to newer versions. Even if it's the same brand and shares the same core values, they are so far apart (40 years!!!) that it's apples to oranges now. The fox will do things new Mustangs could never do... like that old school pushrod sound that is near impossible to beat.

I'll ALWAYS be a fan of the fox body but I think I'm at the point where I will appreciate them from a different perspective.

Part of the reason I keep my fox, I DONT WANT creature comforts in my toy, I want it to be a little rough, loud and not feel like a Camry. Keep in mind I just went to woodward in it and it was a blast all the way there and back even in the rain. The new stuff is awesome, but just feel like a fast DD to me.

I'm with Norm here. I love that the Fox is everything my daily driver isn't.

And you can't beat them for bang for the buck - I would love a S197 or S550 but my wife would never put up with the money i'd have to spend on it.
