Mayoral candidate Jennifer Keesmaat has unveiled a plan to reduce the speed limit on residential streets and redesign the city’s 100 most dangerous intersections as part of an effort to bring an end to pedestrian deaths that she says are entirely preventable.
The former city planner made the announcement at a news conference at the intersection of Jarvis Street and Maitland Place on Friday morning.
She said that if elected she would work to reduce the speed limit on all residential roads to 30 km/h and revamp dangerous intersections and school zones with design elements like a narrowed vehicular right of way at crosswalks, pedestrian islands and pedestrian bump outs to reduce crossing distances.

Those changes would be made in the first two years of her term, Keesmaat said.

Know what, thats just awesome, problem is, does not address the Zombie pedestrians who continue to just walk out into traffic...........BECAUSE PEDESTRIANS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY!!! WTF happened to what our parents taught us about stop n look all directions before crossing the street, yes green for us or not.

North Bay looked at 30klm limits...when they found out how much signage would cost to replace, they dropped the idea.

So glad I moved away from Toronto.

Why not 15kmh? Reduces noise and saves lives at the same time lol

Toronto should just ban cars altogether, build big arse parking towers at TTC locations outside the city.

What a terrible idea.. easy speeding tickets I guess.

I don’t think the Mustang will do 15 idling. Certainly not without bucking and protesting.

I hope she wins, and separates Toronto from Ontario. Hell, I hope she makes Toronto its own damn country. That way we can build a wall around the shit hole.

I will say it before “that guy” does... an auto mustang can do 15kmh easily

Whatever the limit is. There are still people dumb enough to somehow get killed while walking/biking/skateboarding.....this is a problem with people (usually), not cars or speed limits.

I would love to see that happen but open it up when the Leafs win the Cup in 2 years then close it up again for good.

Yeah, but I bet that reverse is stronger than the reverse in a T5.

Busted reverse in frustration and got wheel hop. Bye bye R

when city workers are involved.....it costs $150 to install a pencil sharpener and $150,000 to build an 8 step staircase in a park

so.....what's the estimate to replace every fucking speed limit sign on every fucking residential street in the city?

it would be 10s of millions.....fucking retarded

Just reading that headline makes me sick to my stomach. I refuse to comment about more serious issues in the city. I am already outside of the city of Toronto but this story makes me want to move to another city altogether.

It cost 10k at the end of the day thanks to the dude who made it public.

Don’t cities normally opt out of signs with a few big “its 40 unless posted otherwise” signs anyway?

not sure....but I do know my own street was a 50kph zone until last year.....and it took a group of residents to approach the useless councillor to make it a line item at a council meeting to change it to a 40kph zone....and there are at least 4 signs on the street that stretches probably 2.5kms

Let her lower the speed limit to whatever she wants...haha... who's gonna enforce it?? Can hardly get the cops to show up for anything none violent these days. They simply dont have the time downtown to actually enforce speed laws in any capacity.

We all know that Fluffy’s favourite people (cyclists) never obey the law, so would they ticket a cyclist for doing 35?

They will put in photo radar

Exactly that.

I guess educating pedestrians is too hard with everyone’s sense of entitlement. If vehicles started to respect 40kmh it would be enough for someone to easily judge the vehicle distance before crossing a road.

Edit: iPhones suck ass for HTML forms

I know everyone hates photo radar but it was starting to slow people down on all roads - may be more effective then red light cameras

Photo Radar was only on 400 Series Highways in the 90's.

there was a few photo radars on hwy 10 - one by Flap Jacks and "Cool Nights Hot Rod Shop" Caledon - that one was statioary slowed everyone down! The 400 series photo radar was more mobile and would move to new locations so you never new where it would be...vote Bob Rae! lol

Make the speed limit 140 and put photo radar, best solution. Or variable speed limit based on road conditions and traffic...

best solution?

start making the police enforce ALL road laws and not just the easy ones they can get by hiding behind a bush with a radar gun.

if you start to curb the poor driving that includes failing to signal, merging incorrectly, running stops, adhering to the right of way, maintaining proper speed and also include laws that bike riders and pedestrians fail to follow.

after a while when people start to fix their bad habbits you will see traffic flow improve and when this happens you will have less road rage and people being happier behind teh wheel becasue they can get where they need to in decient time. this will in turn reduce speeding and aggressive driving.

Plain and simple, a huge factor is distracted drivers and pedestrians who are too busy texting and/or listening to music to even give a shit of their surroundings. Automakers are making vehicles more and more interactive increasing driver's distractions plus adding all these so called safety features into the vehicles makes an already poor skilled driver, even worst. Police are not enforcing the laws enough, fines for texting/talking on your device (IMO) are no where near strict enough.

+1 on the above.
