Some cyclists on social media are showing off an innovative strategy for protecting themselves from Toronto traffic by attaching a pool noodle to the back of their bicycles.
The idea is simple, a noodle dangling off the side of someone’s bike forces drivers to move into the other lane when passing, instead of squeezing next to them when trying to get by.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, drivers must leave a metre between themselves and a cyclist when passing, which Toronto Police Traffic Services say is a rule that isn’t always followed.

“Quite often what happens is a cyclist is clipped by a car, or knocked to the ground, because of somebody that’s not giving them enough room,” Const. Clinton Stibbe, spokesperson for the department, told CTVNews.ca.
In 2016, a Toronto Star article featured cyclist Warren Huska, who commutes 18 kilometres every day with his pool noodle in tow. He told the paper that since attaching the noodle to his bike, drivers have been giving him more space when they pass.
Stibbe says three cyclists have been struck and killed so far in 2018, compared to two all of last year. In total, 44 people have been killed on Toronto roadways in 2018, up from 39 at this point a year ago.
Some cyclists swear the pool noodle strategy is one way to maintain their safety, including Twitter user Neville Park, who said: (https://twitter.com/neville_park/status/1020096493926088704) “The difference is remarkable. Though it still feels like a game of chicken when a car is zooming up behind you.”
Though not illegal, Stibbe worries the noodles could cause some accidents.
“There’s always a chance that somehow it could contribute to a collision occurring, in the sense that if it’s knocked off the bike and gets caught into a wheel or something,” he said.
Stibbe says instead the best course of action for road safety is for everyone to obey the rules of the road.
“Everybody needs to respect each other, communicate, and follow the rules,” he said. “That’s how we make our roads safer.”

So, if the SUV stops and Donny Dumbass's "noodle" hits it, has there been a collision or no? Some other riders have taken it up and notch and are using 2x4s strapped to their bikes for the same purpose. Ya, thats gonna end well when he or she does the infamous bicycle sneaking between two stopped cars trick.
No doubt lots of vehicle drivers are careless around bikes but let's be honest here, how few bike riders to you see that actually follow the rules of the road............almost none.

Stupid fags.

The only good cyclist is a fucking dead one.

Seriously. I am sick of these whiny, self important children who have zero self accountability. It's always the driver's fault in their pansy ass world, yet every day I see one of these smug asshats breaking the rules of the goddamn road with little to no goddamn consequences from the police.

And I will put this out there. If one of the pussy little faggots tries this bullshit here in Stratford, and hits my vehicle.... I'm going to beat the ever loving shit out of the goof.

Here is my issues with cyclists. I have no problem giving then a meter even though this means sometimes following slowly behind them to do this, waiting for a safe place to pass. But as soon as you get I a light the cyclist all of a sudden don’t care about a meter of space and rolls right up to the front of the line. Forcing you to have to follow and wait for them again.

If they even bother to actually stop for the light or stop sign. The demand car drivers follow the rules but refuse to follow them, themselves. See them all the time switch between road and sidewalk.

Moron wants motorists to give him more room so he put a noodle on his bike but...dosen't wear a helmet on his noodle? So it's everyone else's responsiblity to make him safe.

Hate to say it but because of people not paying attention in their cars I have taken to the sidewalk or I load up the truck and I hit trails now. I’ve personally had to many close calls. They want cyclist on the road but it isn’t safe.

I pay more than my fair share of taxes that goes to funding the streets and roadways I can’t ride on without risk.

Get out for some fresh air and exercise on the bike and end up under a car.

Now this noodle thing seems silly, and more cyclists need to follow the same rules as cars do.

It's ingrained deep within my head, every time someone talks about crazy city cyclists it queues up.
