Congrats Mark! We had a small wedding only cost about $7500. Was done by the Embassy Suites in Niagara Falls they turned a room into a chapel and we overlooked the falls, had reception at The Keg in the hotel it was awesome. Best wedding I've ever had lol.

So MissBB put a marriage application for a license in front of me last night.. We were planning on getting married anyways and I told I would 2 years ago. Bout time I made an honest woman outta her!! (before she changes her mind) lol
We were gonna do the whole wedding thing, then after adding up the cost and at a minimum of 20 grand for a one night party, just didn't seem worth it to either of us..
So, we're gonna get an Ordained minister and he can perform a very small informal ceremony in the back yard. Have a few witnesses, have a bbq, and some drinks. Badda boom badda bing we're married!! lol
Talk about romantic eh!! ;)
Everyone's invited!!!! Come for the BBQ, stay for the hot tub!! LOL :P

Congrats! That's the way to do it - you'll have more to splurge on the honeymoon trip (of course Clive won't be happy if you go away).

Civic gone, new car tomorrow. Love the kijiji "I'll give you 200 cause I have to clean the dog hair". Your problem, not mine. Ah well, it is gone, and judging by the guy it'll probably be wrapped around a pole or in a ditch within a week.

Yeah we've looked at some places. A few we really liked. But at 150 to 170 per head and a hundred people. (which most places say you need to have). And then still all the other costs. Flowers, dress, tux, limo, DJ, minister, gifts etc etc etc.. WHOA!!!

The backyard at the Hot Tub Wine Machine is just so much better.. AND I have my smoker there :) lol And Clive will be there which is cool.. So realistically we could be doing this within the next few weeks..
Congrats, seems like a good plan, Tracy and I will be married as of July 23rd. Small ceremony at our place and then finger foods at a local establishment with booze music and dancing. I think we are at about 7k in costs......

Oh I know.. I've always wanted a lil Porsche.I can pick up a 944 for around 8 and they're simple to work on. A Boxster for around 10ish, and not sure how they are to work on..lol.. My brother inlaw had a Boxster and it was a fun car!!
. A Grand National has always been at the top of my list... One day!!.. As for another Pony. I can't decide on which one I would want right now.. I think these German cars have ruined me for anything North American... I would take a new GT350 anyday however!!! :D

All I know of the 944 is a nightmarish ownership experience, wrought with timing chains, electrical, gaskets. They all seem to fail a lot and require special Porsche parts and tools to repair.

Boxster, all the 8k ones you see on kijiji are of questionable vintage and honestly first gen Boxsters weren't great. Many had crappy terrible stereos and didnt even have door speakers. They eat tires and brakes like its going out of style. Also a lot of Boxster's (00-05) are affected by the Porsche IMS issues, which if that goes, enjoy buying a new motor for $7k+

Laffs

Do NOT get a Boxster!!! My dad has one. They are unbelievably GUTLESS and VERY expensive to fix. They sound terrible and did I mention gutless...

They "drive" really nice though. Very solid and responsive. They look pretty good with the top down as well. But they're unforgivably gutless.

The stereo isn't very great. The interior is very meh to look at like all Porsches really. It's just a generally underwhelming car. Get a used Vette or something if you don't want a Mustang.

I hear ya buddy.. My brother in law had an 09.. Amazing handling car, but you're 100% right on the gutless part.. Maybe I should just hold out for a 911 or a 928 in great condition!! I love them late 80's 928S4's!! :) I do know they're prone to timing belt issues every 100,000K's..

If you can find a manual 928 for decent money I think it'll be a wise investment.

My love for Porsche started with my uncle's 88 928S4, it was stored at my parents house during winter, my brother and I would sit in it for HOURS! It became a bit of a nightmare though, it was traded for a 96 911 TT which I'm sure my uncle wishes he still had now!

The 928 had died, went in for service, guess my Uncle was called with the quote, he gave them CC # to go ahead with repair, short time later Visa called him saying typically people don't buy cars on their CC, had to explain that he didn't buy a car that his Porsche was Getting repaired.

I stopped looking about a month ago, but 928's and 911's was my daily search haha

Completely relate.. When I was 16.. My second "car" job was working at a small German car repair shop in Mississauga. They mostly had Porsche's there.. I completely fell in love with the 928 and still almost 30 years later still have that love for them.. I was fortunate to get to drive a few of them (never far) however the boss would let be drive the 944's to get coffee's... The 911's and the 928's I never got far out of the parking lot...
Shame that most of the 928's were auto's.. I still shop around for them here and there thinking one day I will have one!!! But like you said, find a nice manual one! BINGO!!! :)
Besides the look of them, they're the only Porsche that had a V8!!

So my sweetheart dumped water on her fairly new laptop and the keyboard shit the bed. I knew it was only the keyboard because an external worked fine. Now, I know jack about laptops but was motivated to fix it rather than buying yet another new laptop. Lucky me our HP does not have the cheap and easy to replace keyboard like most but rather the kind that are integrated with the entire top cover and unique to certain models. $350 US from HP...yikes

Hit the web and found one from some US keyboard place for $109. At our door 4 days later and last night I tore the laptop apart and I do mean apart. Buttoned it up and it works as good as new.

I love it when a plan comes together.

I do (just evap no lights etc), first e test was a couple weeks back with the rear o2s turned off (showed 3 not ready). Last night did not fail they literally never got to that point of the test as they either had equipment failure or couldn't figure out how to use it, so was just a waste of time.

Audi want's 250.00 for the fronts and 150.00 for the rears... Then installation.. I found an aftermarket (recommended by some Audi peeps)
Akebono, they're 180 for the front and 100 for the rear.. So there's a bit of savings there.. I have found that all the really good stuff is located south of the border!! We're limited up in the great white north for over the counter items..

One of Joanna's co-workers has a buddy who works on Audi's out of his garage at home and will throw them on the car for 100.00. Better than the 500 labor cost from the fine Krauts at Audi!! LOL

Same here - OEM brake pads (Volvo/Brembo) for the Volvo R were $240 (front) and $220 (rear) 1.5 years ago so will be higher now but I'm not cheaping out on brake, suspension parts or tires. If you're buying a car like that use the first line stuff. For planned maintenance items I buy my parts in the US which helps to take some of the sting off although the FX rate has reduced the savings somewhat. Brake parts are heavy though so a Niagara pick-up run would help if you combine with other purchases.

A buddy at work went 2 years in a row, both before and after the changes and said it was quite different, and you really didn't need ear plugs with the new setup. To me, part of the experience is the sound, smell, feel so I'm really hoping they make changes that will also translate into better sounding motors.

I went to the F1 race in Nurburgring in 1998 and a couple times to Montreal when they ran the screaming V10's and it was fantastic....hoping for some of that back.

Not good to have a bbq hooked to the gas line if your forgetful. Had a coworker look out on his deck one winter and see that there was no snow on the bbq. His Wife had used it three days before and forgot to shut it off

Doesn't everyone turn it off when you take the food off the grill? Not sure how one forgets that....that's like taking the pot off the stove but not turning off the stove.

^^^yeah, that's not a common occurrence. Gotta be pretty dumb to take the burgers off the grill and not turn off the grill. If I don't hear the "pop, pop" of the two burners purging when I turn them off, then I'm not walking inside the house. I may sometimes forget to turn the burners off, but I always turn the gas supply valve off.

No idea what she was thinking or doing. I saw her turning in my peripheral vision and thought nothing of it until I heard the bang. There was a pregnant woman unloading her purse/bag from the other side of the SUV that got hit....naturally, total disbelief. She was ok. I went back at lunch to look at the X1 and it had pretty good damage to the passenger front fender and bumper (scratched the headlight but not broken), walked around to the driver side and guess what....same type of damage. I was once doing environmental remediation work at a gas station. Lady clipped the cement filled metal post that is designed to protect the pumps with the front corner, proceeds to back up and then scrape the side of the van against it straightening out. Fills up and pulls out, which is when I noticed that the other side was also similarly damaged. Guy I was working with and I just stood there dumbfounded. Some people just shouldn't be driving.

 me too. went to Lion's head- everything was ok till kids & wife decide they want to check out graig caves. The road is all gravel large rocks- just got the car lowered- going like 5 km/hr pull over when the occasion car whizzes by throwing rocks all over the place- 2 kms at least to get to the place took like I'd say a good 1/2 hr. pull in now the roads are like mini off road hills to the grass parking lot - then when we get out of the car kids decide they don't want to do it and that there are 2 many bugs! I would have said lets do it but they charge $10 adult( ea) and $5 kids ea and the make you sign a waiver in case you stumble and break your neck-

anyway hopped in the car and slowly off loaded it back

Deciding to spend money on a boat is not to be taken lightly.. What are you using it for primarily? I have buddies who have kick ass Bass boats and go fishing almost every weekend. If you have a cottage then a boat is pretty much a must, or a PWC.. Growing up on Lake Simcoe every summer was always fun.. Boating everyday. But now that I'm not there, just doesn't seem as important.
Last year I was debating getting a boat and a tow rig and start camping more, but at the end of it, how often would I really be going camping. Would seem like the boat would only get used a few times a year, and when you're investing between 20-40K (depending on the boat) would just seem like a waste of money!!
Would still love to have me a nice speed boat, but I's rather have a place on the water before pulling the trigger on that..
I did however talk to Joanna about selling the house and living on a boat full time.. She's open to the idea, but now's not the time for us.. Maybe in a few more years!!

The 'Bust Out Another Thousand' term really depends on what kind of boat your talking about.

A used deep v aluminum can be found used for under $10k ready to hit the water. If your talking 20ft+ fibreglass boats with a 250 on the back.. Then yeah be ready to spend some coin on purchase and maintenance.

I love my 16.5 alum with a 50 merc.. But it's strictly a fishing machine.

I'm out every weekend from April to November. Then again I don't have kids.

I've always been interested but I'd have to learn how to sale.
Lots of decent small sail boats can be had for under 10k

Glad I posted up my intentions guys, helpful advice really.

Was thinking 18-20' bow rider, something I could fish off of and wifey could lay in the sun. I didn't do my research on maintance or reliability.

Fuel isn't really an issue, tank of fuel for the day out on the water isn't a deal breaker... BUT thinking if I don't have a ton of time to drive the car I just have to pull out of my garage how much am I going to use the boat that I'll have to pull to destinations....

Thanks for the advice guys.

I married into a family with a boat access only cottage. Huge expense for not that much use besides going back and forth. And did they get a pontoon boat to make it easy to bring supplies over? Of course not, they got a bow rider for all that tubing and water skiing they have never done with it. At least with a pontoon you can fish comfortably and haul lumber over.

Honestly, rent a boat a few times and see if you want one. And add up all the costs you think you will encounter and double it. Unless you fish a lot or have a cottage it probably isn't worth it.

Yeah, I'm not a boat fan. But I have thought about getting a cheap sailboat for the cottage. Because I too am crazy.

last major mod was the dashboard....and then I had some paint correction done.....car is basically unchanged since then

when my wife got sick last year I just kept the car covered up in storage mode....cause it was far from a priority

but we knew prior to 2014 storage that axle fluid was leaking into the rear drums....so this round of surgery is far from glamorous.....the rear end is a 1940s style primitive pain in the ass

but to have the starter give up the ghost while sitting about 25 feet away from Rick's hoist was a fucking bonus

Dog rescued from sweltering vehicle in Toronto
The owner has been given a fine and a lecture

A woman out shopping in Toronto is lucky to be returning home with her dog.

Police were called to Dufferin Mall just before 5 p.m. about a dog left in a sweltering vehicle.

The windows were left open, slightly, and a door was able to be opened without damaging the vehicle.

The Border Collie mix was rescued and given water until the owner came back.

She has been given a $125 fine under the Provincial Offences Act.

People who had gathered in the parking lot, waiting, were also given a chance to lecture the dog's owner before she left.

Over 6000 including the walk out lower level. I have pretty much got the kids (grown adults who can't afford to move out in this economy and housing market) to turn out the lights as they leave a room but we have at least 6 cable boxes sucking power all the time. Which reminds me good old Rogers is going to up the price of TMN next month. We still have two patio doors to replace (3 done so far) and about 8 more old wood frame windows to do. I was amazed at the difference a new window makes. Stand in front of an old one and sweat from the sun and in front of a new one and you feel nothing.

Armen
07-27-2016, 03:55 PM
Do you keep your windows covered with drapes/blinds on hot days? When I moved into my new place the walkout patio door to the back was uncovered (never had been apparently). The sun would come in thru that one in the morning and warm up the house pretty quick. I covered it with some heavy black out type drapes and it made a big difference - so a/c didn't have to work as hard and came on less. I've since replaced the a/c and the furnace with new hi-efficiency units anyway but I figure every little bit helps.

Main floor and upstairs absolutely, however my daughter has German Shepard's running wild downstairs and they make short work of any door or window coverings they have access to. Not necessarily deliberately just enthusiasm if you know what i mean.

You bring up a good point, we have a large pond with a 1HP pump that runs during the day. Have had it shut off in this heat as the pond is very low with the little rain we have been getting.
This is staring to make sense, effluent pump and well pump etc, etc.

If the Boss would go for a gas dryer we could probably save significantly. This would be a great idea as we could have a gas line installed in the garage at the same time!

Electric dryer and electric water heater are your big users.

Due to space and location we could not go with a gas water heater so I installed a hybrid that uses electric as well as a heat pump. It was an expensive unit but when I added the big pond pump to run the water fall my bill stayed pretty much the same. Also went threw the house and replaced all the lights I could with led's.
