CRA cracks down on undeclared tips for restaurant and bar staff

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/small-business/talent/cra-cracks-down-on-undeclared-tips-for-restaurant-and-bar-staff/article38025478/

A surge of tax audits of staff at one of Prince Edward Island's most predominant hospitality groups illustrates the growing efficiency of the Canada Revenue Agency's tools for tackling formerly hard-to-pin down tip income and the growing risk to those who don't declare it.

Dozens of staff at PEI's Murphy Hospitality Group – possibly as many as 200, management says – received letters from the Canada Revenue Agency in January, accusing them of low-balling the gratuities they earned in 2014 and 2015. The agency is claiming some individuals failed to declare as much as tens of thousands of dollars – and is asking for back taxes on it, with potential further financial penalties of up to half of what's owed. A number of service staff reached out to The Globe and Mail to signal their frustration with what they believe was a sudden shift in the CRA's enforcement tactics.

I hate the CRA. How can they prove undeclared tips? They're like curious sharks who take a bite out of a surfer thinking it's a seal. They may be wrong but they don't leave without taking a bite out of you.

Not the CRA but another example of getting shafted (this time MOT). I genuinely paid $1300 for my current beater, got taxed at $2300.

Heard more examples of that recently than in years past. All these agencies are upping their tax collections.

Next time get a mobile appraiser, cost about $20-40. This goes for anyone buying a used vehicle privately, best way not to get dinged heavily on the tax.

What a survivor. Haven't seen one in decades. Also amazing how far Hyundai have come in the ~30 years they have been selling in north america. I remember the first accents coming out in the mid 90s and it slowly starting to rebuild their reputation. Now most people I know would at least consider a Hyundai for their next car.

Audi has always been the leader in interiors even with the base model especially comparing it to BMW. I do have to say that the S550 interior is indeed better than that of the S197. Some niggly things still bug me with the American cars that need to be improved on such as that stupid harness that comes from the trunk lid to the inside of the trunk. That is so annoying that they never thought about tucking it away properly. When I was at the car show that was the one annoyance that bothered me. Also that shit carpet and having a better (read harder) trunk floor can be improved on showing that they care. It just looks like ass. Even a KIA had a better trunk liner. Don't get me wrong but I will still eventually get myself a S550.

Restaurants are making you pay for Ontario's minimum wage hike

Annual inflation eases but …
Ontario consumers appear to be paying the price for the increase in the minimum wage.

There's evidence that restaurants and other businesses are passing that increase onto consumers, which you can glean from today's Statistics Canada report on January inflation.

"Restaurant prices posted the second-largest monthly increase of the past 27 years - if you were to think that was the result of Ontario's minimum wage, you'd be correct," Bank of Montreal senior economist Robert Kavcic said of the overall report.

Restaurant prices across Canada rose 3.7 per cent in January from a year earlier, a far faster pace than December's 2.9 per cent. The overall move higher in food prices, of 2.3 per cent, was the fastest pace since April, 2016.

In Ontario alone, Statistics Canada said, restaurant meals climbed 4.9 per cent, and child care and housekeeping services almost 10 per cent. That, the agency said, coincided with "a legislated minimum wage increase."

It's interesting, given the controversy over minimum wages and the impact on jobs, to compare last week's report on the labour market and today's inflation release.

"The impact of minimum wage legislation in Ontario was hard to ascertain in the January employment report, but easier to see in the price data," said Toronto-Dominion Bank senior economist James Marple.

"The acceleration in food price growth came in large part due to restaurants and in Ontario. Child care and housekeeping services prices also accelerated in the month."

Annual inflation in general eased to 1.7 per cent, down from December's 1.9 per cent, while rising by a stronger-than-expected 0.7 per cent on a monthly basis.

If you ignore food and energy prices, consumer prices rose 1.5 per cent over the year and 0.2 per cent from December, so all in all "a material acceleration over the past few months," said Royce Mendes of CIBC World Markets.

Jeez, thanks a lot Captain Obvious, who would have thought that increasing the price of labour would in turn increase the cost of good/services/living life? Certainly not Wynne, it was supposed to be a magical time, where companies just paid employees more and nothing changed as a result.
I swear people are braindead in this world, and the guy who wrote this probably made a few grand for his “assessment”.

most games the Leafs have ever won in a season - 45

Honestly I feel like this shit is what's wrong with society today. not the energy drink part but the fact that this woman decides instead of I don't know, fucking parenting and maybe paying more attention to what your kids are shoving in their body your reaction is to make a fucking facebook post and call for "hopes and prayers" and demand a school (that the kid who power bombed the Dew and Red Bull doesn't even fucking attend anymore...) ban them (minding they don't currently sell on campus). So somehow force already over worked (and potentially armed??? MURICA) teachers to police what teenagers are drinking at all times, right.

Anyone know where I can get some marine grade cables made up locally?

Looking for about 12ft of 6 gauge with copper lugs and some heat shrink. I know bass pro makes them.. but I'm not looking to pay ass rape prices. Could also order online but would be nice if I found somewhere local. Could just buy cable and do it myself.. but then I have to buy a crimper.

We have a 1999 Ford F550 V10 C/C in the fleet. Truck was set up with a specialized bed that no longer serves a purpose and sits for 90% of the year. So we said lets flat bed the thing and decked it. Just got done with it and went to move it for the first time, think this is one of the lowest mileage V10 work trucks around, under 60k kms. Now I'm pushing to put on new 19.5s and have the bed and bumpers linex'd, do Harley style headlights, I have a real sickness.

Thought of that.. but it's for my trolling motor where connection is really important for the iPilot. Any little voltage drop and it acts up.. manufacture says specifically to not solder connections. I'm sure it would be fine.. but this damn thing gave me headaches last summer and just trying to do it right since whoever installed it previously was out to lunch.

Nope no sarcasam. I just bought my first real boat last year so still learning all the cool toys.
It’s a 68 or 69 Glastron swinger try hull. With a mercuruser inboard/outboard

Picked up my min Kota used. It just runs off a food peddle

That’s pretty neat. What kind of battery life do you get off your trolling motor?

I have this probably irrational fear of running the battery dead and not being able to restart the boat. Was planning on picking up a little booster pack to keep in the boat.

First job this year will be to fix the exhaust seal on the stern drive. Then fix the hydrolic lift Then Finish hard wiring the trolling motor. And then Upgrade the fish finder.

Are you running the TM off your starting battery? If so you really need to dedicate a true deep cycle battery for it. All other electronics can be hooked up to the starting battery.

Is it cable steer or electric? A 50# 12v trolling motor generally runs 50 amps at top speed. A typical group 27 battery is about 85-95 amps. So at full speed it’s dead in less than 2 hours. Of course fishing at full trolling speed is near impossible. I go roughly 6-8 hours on a 50# 12v motor with 1 group 27 battery. A lot of different things can change this from wind to weight of the boat.

A 24v or 36v will cut down on amps big time but of course requires 2 or 3 batteries. You can hook up as many batteries as you want to a 12v trolling motor, just needs to be wired in parallel. So essentially doubling or tripling the amps. Or quadrupling if your a mad man.

If I were you I would get myself a onboard charger and a good deep cycle battery.. group 24, 27, 29 or 31.. your choice. Hook up the charger to both batteries, come home and plug them in and walk away. They’re ready for next time.

Ahh.. I’m a bad teacher. Hope this all makes sense.

Definitely get yourself a battery for it.. then you can just have some jumper cables onboard if your starting battery ever fails. Speed? Depends.. rarely take it above 3-4.

I don't know much about him, but I do know that in recent years there has been a populist movement world wide (BTW I have an undergrad degree in Political Science, so I find this stuff fascinating). The same movement that swept the Donald in.

Take a look at Brexit, the recent Italian election, the German government changing direction, the hard line Australian PM.

The regular folk seem to finally be getting out to vote rather than bitch after the fact.

If this holds true I can see him winning....a very tough road, but we have been seeing weird shit all over the place.

I read that the rating for Sunday's final round broadcast was higher than:

2017 US Open Final round
2017 British Open Final round
2017 PGA Final round

the only final round of a major last year that had a higher rating than Sunday's final round was the final round of the 2017 Masters

that's the perspective we're talking about here

this was just a regular run-of-the-mill PGA tournament in early March

if Tiger is walking down the back 9 at Augusta in a few weeks with the lead....the sporting world is gonna go completely apeshit

Looking at online classifieds as I do and every one of my childhood/teenage import/turbo cars have sky rocketed in values to unobtainable levels. I used to tell myself that maybe one day I could afford the 60k or so to buy a "bad boys" era 964 Turbo, now I'd have to be a millionaire choosing between that same Porsche or a lake front cottage property. Still trying to figure out how fantasizing about a Lamborghini Gallardo is a more realistic dream than one day owning an Inline 6 Toyota made in 1994...

Every car has a sweet spot.....and if a car has given you a boner since the day you laid eyes on it..you have to wait for the sweet spot and strike!!

For me that car is the Ford GT........it was 140K brand new if you could even get on a list........I had no such funds in 2005/2006 and now it's 300K. The latest one is 600K and only will go up from there. I have no chance to own either gen now.

A Gallardo could be had for 60K (unmodified) about 3 years ago. I would opt for an underground racing modded version.....but need to be in the right place at the right time.

When you're dad wants to sell the AMG 63 for under 50K......call me! :)

Also agreed on all statements. A lot of this nonsense I'm spewing is because I'm trying to push myself all in on an E46 M3, they starting to climb and I feel like owning a Laguna Seca Blue or Carbonschwarz on Cinnamon E46 manual would be bucket list for me and a good spring board to one day Porsche. Difficulty is all the "other stuff" associated with getting.

Kind of like my disappointment the other day. Killing time on YouTube and in one video see this beautiful. Boat. Dark sleek. Video is a few years old. I think man that’s nice wonder how far away I am from owning one.

Problem with boats in videos it’s hard to judge size.

Turns out it was a Vandutch 55.

Yeah they go used for around 1.2 million.

Never going to happen.

Yea, I know nothing about boats aside from all the ones I think are nice cost more than I'd ever fathom spending on a boat. Buddy has a really nice 34ft Sea Ray, I think early to mid 2000s. Always assumed it was like a 30-40k boat, come to find out I could buy one of my aforementioned dream cars for the price of it now. I am definitely not a boat guy.

I think a patient buyer can find a non turbo variant 300 for about the same price as a decent 400.

A turbo 300 is another story.

I’m struggling to keep my 400 stock. I upgraded the brakes and put in a Torsen from a 300 but will leave it at that......

Turbo 300 is not available as factory for USDM or Canadian spec, they were all N/A 2JZ. Most guys either swap in the GTE motor or aftermarket turbo kit, or you buy a JDM Soarer which was 1JZ turbo.

The problem with stuff that is heavily engineered is engineers are not often technicians. Also for whatever reason whenever they claim a highly inaccessible part is that way because it's not a wear or often replaced part, they're ignoring the concept of the bathtub curve and laughing in the face of Murphy and his laws.

RedSN

huh.
I've never heard of the "bathtub curve". I guess we don't encounter that failure mode often in structural engineering. It would be very very bad if we had the "early 'infant mortality' failures" portion of the curve in buildings.

I have never heard of the bathtub curve either, but in my industry (Electro-mechanical power transmission) I do see plenty of examples of machine design and/ or installation locations looking good on paper, but no one taking into account the real world requirements of maintenance and replacement of equipment in conjunction with auxiliary equipment and machines

In the appliance industry the engineers, manufactures and customers all care far more about how something looks than how easy it is to service.

Gabe

I thought of an example from a structural engineering design standpoint that exists in my industry, not from a safety aspect as Don is referring to, but again from the maintenance standpoint. We supply gearmotors that drive large bucket elevators. Our 10,000lb gear reducer and 350hp motor could be located 200+ feet in the air on top of the silos. The well thought out structural designers will include steel i-beams overhead of our equipment to allow for the motor or reducer to be lifted out of the way with a beam trolley, the alternative is to have to rent a crane and lift from the ground

The photo below shows the additional structure on top of the elevator heads to allow for the beam trolley (very top of the yellow structure on the right hand side)

This is incorporated into structural design all the time. Every elevator shaft has a hoist beam at the top. Grocery store mechanical mezzanines have hoist beams that project out the maintenance door. Basement electrical vaults have 'knock-out' panels designed into the walls.

Structures to aid in maintenance operations need to be written into the specs of said equipment and be submitted ahead of time to be incorporate/coordinated into the design.

It's often not our fault. In a rush to break ground and get the building build, we are done our part before any of the mechanical, electrical, or operations guys have even started to look at the design.

Got into a debate with a GC on a local health unit build. I was the lowly appliance guy brought into install the gas dryer but for some reason the engeneer. Who did the design had them install a 6” 150 foot. Dryer vent.
Max according to manufacture is 4” and like 60 foot.

Because it was gas code says it had to adhere to the manufactures recommendation.
Took 3 calls for the appliance tech rep and one for the TSSA rep before they listened. Had three engeneers calling me telling me just doing it’s fine.

I was looking to replace my much hated (by me) Nissan Sentra winter beater. I thought I’d grab an accura TL or something similar. I stumbled onto a SC400, pulled the trigger. It is virtually rust free, mostly stock and too nice to drive in the winter. So now I had to buy another beater and have another 90’s vehicle to maintain in my growing fleet.

I’ve always like the SC’s but now realize I should’ve waited for an SC300 with the Supra running gear. This SC is sort of the gentleman’s Supra and the one vehicle I own that doesn’t scream redneck

SC300 doesn’t exactly have Supra running gear, those stories are false, if that were the case you could say a GS300 has Supra running gear, but it doesn’t either, I had one.
SC400 is a sweet ride man, but after owning an LS400 and making the mistake of wanting to maintain it (timing belt, water pump, full tune up), I sold it, really regret that though as it was one of my favourite cars I ever owned.

yep I did standard maint to mine, timing belt, water pump, starter, rad, brake and fuel lines, service the injectors, wires, plugs, blast out the upper/lower, new pulley bearings, tensioner, swapped in LS400 brakes and a Torsen. Supra front K, arms, bar etc bolts right up, as does the Supra rear cradle/arms/bar. I grabbed a 200k winter driven parts car and stripped it. Gonna do the belt/water pump/tune to the engine and crate up for a spare. I'm considering getting the parts car tranny serviced as well. I had the rear end out to do the lines and debated swapping in the Supra gear but found a semi cheap Torsen and left it at that.

I plan on using this as my "date " car and drive it in a sedate old man fashion.

Dude, it’s a Lexus, not a Mustang, you don’t need to keep a spare engine on hand, lol.
And yes, the pearl white is very hard to match, be careful. Car sounds pretty sick though, I felt like a boss in my LS, all I did was the aforementioned EVO wheels for summer, resonator and middle muffler delete, and swapped in some seats from a Nissan Altima I was scrapping.

Sometimes I think I should just jump into construction. Love installing hardwood flooring for some reason, the engineered stuff is so much easier than natural stuff. I have a buddy that's unnaturally good at trim work, just need to paint over the joints, no need for DAP lol... Together we could make a pretty good team. Also love doing kitchens, decks, fences, etc... I also know people high-up at the TSSA and WSIB, if that makes a difference LOL. What I like about it is, at the end of the day, you look back at your work and feel proud as fak and my OCD makes for perfect work at the end of the day, even if I have to redo stuff at my own expense. I don't get that feeling in my profession (My current path: IT Director > VP of PMO > CTO).

But whatever, I don't think I could reach 200k + salary installing hardwood flooring for a living.

The only thing I don't like about this industry is the people. I'm sorry but met very few contractors that I'd qualify as "quality people". Show up to work drunk and stoned at 9am, shitty attitude, just overall lazy as fak... Hard to find good help in this field. I hired few people to work in my house and except for one electrician (panel replacement), I had to either redo their work (and not pay them) or have them redo it or help out to get it done. My $12,000 "professionally built" staircase still has a few crooked balusters and I have to redo the trim work.

On another note, the fucking builder asshole who fucking GLUED the trim to the casings should be shot dead a few times over. 2" trim glued, stapled and nailed with 3 INCH NAILS... while the door casing itself isn't secured (the top isn't attached to the sides at all). Load-bearing trim is what I call it LOL Cleaning that up was fun.

At least it was only the school shooter who died in today's US incident (unclear if suicide or by school officer). Hopefully the students who were shot survive....victim numbers were low since it was only a hand-gun (maybe targeted?).

Plus they have all these bombings in Texas over the past couple weeks.,..crazy.

I think the numbers being low had more to do with an armed security officer on location that actually did his job.
. Handgun is just as deadly in that situation as a rifle.

Just got a quote from Haggerty for my Jeep, apparently they have some new optional clause that states they will pay you out for your car but you get your car back!

This is the reason we decided to build the big WEST garage. He now wants to buy a home, with a garage. I said,, you already have a garage that is beyond whatever "the house to be garage" might be... That is why we built it...
He smiled and said "well, I guess I don't need a house with a garage for a toy..just a garage to store junk.LOL"
I just need him to be as OCD as me with cleaning up after he uses one of the lifts...maybe not. Idk .lol. That's a "me issue"
