I’ll let your thread gain some traction and get some input from our members and let u decide first if u want a vert.
If not then ..... ?

I wouldn’t want to be the one to sway your decision and be blamed for it later lol

I’ve had lots of Mustangs including a fox vert, an S197 very and the current 2015. Didn’t have any issues with any of them. I’ve had my current Mustang the longest and I enjoy it very much. It does so many things well. Road course, strip, cruising top up or down... it’s really been a blast.

In 1993 my wife and I went to Las Vegas and rented a Mustang LX convertible. First one I'd ever driven. During the week we were there I had the top down most of the time and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, it wasn't something I really wanted, and I would up buying a 1993 Fort Probe GT.
around 1996 I had some financial trouble and was reduced to driving a 1992 Dodge Spirit. I said to Rhonda, "don't worry. In a couple of years we'l be fine and I'll be able to buy A Mustang Convertible. It popped out of my mouth from nowhere because I hadn't even dreamed about it. However, in February 1999 I was able to order my 1999 Mustang GT convertible. I LOVED that car, especially with the 3.73 gears and larger throttle body Joe DaSilva put on it.
Since then, I've had a total of SEVEN Mustang ragtops. The 99; a 2003 Cobra; a 2004 Cobra; a '12 GT; a 14' GT; a '15 GT, and now my '17 GT. Today I was driving all day with the top down. IT's a fabulous feeling. Unless money is tight I wouldn't even consider a hardtop. The new car I am making a deal on is also a convertible(Not a Mustang), and if that deal falls through I'll likely be ordering a '20 Mustang; Convertible of course.

To answer Screw's question: the only time my top leaks is in a touchless car wash. Not all of them, but there's one nearby that puts out a LOT of pressure. In cold weather or even heavy rain it's fine.

Nope. I’ve been caught in torrential down falls with it and no issue. But I wouldn’t go through and automatic car wash with it.

I love my vert. I have a sunroof in my pickup and in my wife's car and hate them. I drive my mustang top down as much as possible. I put on a baseball cap when its too sunny but top still goes down. If it is stupid hot I leave the top up and turn on the A/C. Touchless car wash... Bring in a cloth to catch the occasional drips. I still use the touchless wash when I'm too lazy to pull out the pressure washer though

I’ve had a few and loved them, in older cars you do get some water inside after a heavy rain but anything within the decade would be pretty water-tight.

Btw, you reeled me in with the thread title, thought it was a different discussion. So just to satisfy my initial thought I’ll say this: after 13 years of marriage and two breast-fed kids, there’s very little in this world better than my gal topless (.)(.) :)

I have owned 4 Mustangs. My 2nd last one was a ‘12 GT convertible. For me, the temperature had to be ‘just right’ for me to lower the top.
Too hot out and you’d roast. Too cool out and you’d freeze. Yes, you could turn the heat on, etc., but when your hands, arms, etc., would get cold, just to ‘enjoy’ top down driving, it wasn’t for me.

I kept the car for 3 years, but would not buy a vert again.

Mine did not leak through car washes, as some had mentioned.

For me:
Pros:
Looks great
Great visibility with top down
Full exposure (some ppl love that)

Cons:
A bit of cowl shake
Not always able to enjoy the top down (our climate, spotty summer weather)
Full exposure (if you don’t like that)
Safety (some ppl have concerns)

In the end, it’s your money, your choice, your car. Do what’s going to make you happy.

Good Luck.

I've had my vert since 1994 and still enjoy it - I feel like it's an instant blood pressure/stress reducer when the top goes down. The newer ones are much more water tight although I typically only ever had issue with car washes - none with the DIY coin wash or hand wash.

We complain about winter and summers are short so it's my way of making the most of the late spring, summer, early fall. Yes, on a steamy July, cloudless day the top might be down for shorter periods and a hat is a permanent accessory in the car but we have A/C and motorized vert tops so all it takes is 20 seconds and you're covered if you need a break.

Had my convertible for 10 years now, and my $0.02 is this

- When the weather is right, no better feeling than the top down and the exhaust noise emanating all around you.
- When the weather is less than ideal, boy do I wish I had a hard top. In the sweltering dog days of summer and colder fall times I won't find the energy to drive the car because it feels a bit off with the top up. I probably lose a month of driving vs if I would have bought a hard top.
- If you want a drag or road course weapon, don't start with a vert. You'll always be climbing up hill. Won't stop you from enjoying those events with the car but if you're competitive then caveat emptor.

It sort of depends on what you are driving as well.
I have had my new (to me )Jaguar F-type vert for less than two weeks. In that time I have driven almost 1800 km(kinda funny because the previous owner drove 15000 km in 4 years!), and the top has been up only when it's raining. Windows down A/c off, rear diffuser up, it's an incredible pleasure. Very little wind buffeting, surprisingly little noise (except when I use the active exhaust), just sheer enjoyment. I can actually hear the phone through the car speakers, which I couldn't in the Mustang.
Compared to all 7 of my ragtop Mustangs, it's night and day. Like mentioned above, when weather conditions weren't ideal I'd have the top up, a/c or heater on. In looking back, I actually drove "topless" very little.
So, if you are considering a vert, there are other cars to try out. As much as I was a rabid Mustang fan for decades(still am), I am now spoiled.

Since I'm on the subject, my car has an active exhaust. At low speeds, it sounds like most v-6's kinda... meh!), but when the mufflers are turned off, and you run up through the gears, the sound at 6000rpm is blood curdling. Not like a v-8, but more like a formula one car. Incredible! You want to do it again and again. And again!

I have never really been a vert guy. Much prefer the more solid feel of a hardtop. Also never wanted the additional maintenance of maintaining a soft top or the worry of someone cutting it to get into the car. Each to their own I guess.

As stated by others, there are only a couple of 2 seaters that could possibly change my mind but I will likely stay with a hardtop.

You get the bigger brembo brakes (which are now the base GT S550 brakes), specially recalibrated traction control, anti-lock brakes and performance front and rear brake pads, 6-speed, wider 19” wheels and I believe higher spring rates, bigger anti-roll bars and some additional cooling, Torsen helical differential and 3.73 gears.

I paid just under 14g for a 1 owner 2004 GT that was totally stock and in incredible shape. 68k on it. Even has the original window sticker.

It was more than I wanted to spend, but it was in far and above better condition then the other options on the market at that time and I had gone and looked at them all. I was good luck for auto sales. A car would sit for months not selling and as soon as I would go look at it or call about it, it would sell the next day.

3 ragtops for me: 99 35th anniversary, 04 Cobra, and recently 98 Cobra Saleen. They are great for cruising in the summer. There's something about driving in the open air.

Downside is that they are not quite as rigid as their coupe brethren and as another pointed out here, if you want to track it, you'll face some restrictions and/or need to put in a full roll bar. Also....its another potential repair issue; top eventually will wear and/or top motor/switch will go....if you drive it enough.

Unfortunately not, the CS/GT is strictly an appearance package. Different options came with it between 11-12 as opposed to 13/14 models. My preference between the two is the 13/14 models as the CS package delivered more in those years.

Also, if you want a stick in that body style then stick with 13/14 models. Ford did some quiet revisions the MT-82 to help improve things. Either way, your first mod should be an MGW or Barton shifter (with direct transmission mount). Factory divorced shifter design is just flawed for any spirited driving.
