Mosport Grand Prix track?

Would have to try to book a date now (and maybe still not get one), and have people put down their dollars now as well ... not cheap to rent. Would be better off to tag on to one of the existing events there.

Probably mentioned here before, best value for a Mosport GP event is going with the Toronto area chapter of the BMW club at their 2-day schools. Their chief instructor is Derek Hanson, and many of the in-car coaches are guys I know who also help at events put on by Derek's son Peter. You will get proper classroom sessions and in-car coaching included with the entry price.

They have their 2020 dates posted up now. In Canada there are 4 at the Mosport GP circuit and 1 at Calabogie:

https://www.trilliumbmwclub.ca/2020trackdates

Some info on their events here, note that you do need at least an SA2010 rated helmet ... M rated motorcycle lids are not accepted.

Speed Therapy is the people from JRP in Oakville. From what I've heard they put on decent days, never been in attendance myself. The price isn't bad for a one day event, and from what I read on the site they will provide in-car instruction for the novice "B" group ... never a bad idea at Mosport.

We had hoped to have spring n fall dates to announce at Joes open house on Sat but no confirmation from the track as of yet. We are however aiming for (don't hold me to it until we know for sure) early June and late August.

I'm happy to announce for the first time ever we have track dates before the New Year.

LOCATION

Toronto Motorsports Park (Cayuga) Road Course

SPRING

FALL

Thursday August 27

In response to feedback from those attending, we've been able to secure earlier dates for both. Thanks again to the whole crew at DaSilva Racing for making this happen. Don't be shy about calling them to reserve your spot, yes even this early.

As supporters of speed, we like to take these vehicles to their limits to see what they can do. If you’re like us, you should consider driving your vehicle the way it was intended: “Enthusiastically”! Chase your friends down or practice your getaway driving (aka, emergency maneuvering) on the road course. Either way, you can have a great time while everyone else is at work!
THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL MAKES AND MODELS with the following conditions:
– No Open Wheeled Vehicles (Formula Cars, 4-Wheelers, Dune Buggies, Go-Karts, Motorcycles, Forklifts, Golf Carts, Hovercrafts, Tanks, Buses, Horse-Drawn Carriages, etc…)
– Convertibles allowed. Must either have roll cage (to run top-down) or working top (will be required to keep the roof closed).
– Brake lights must be functional.

Make sure you give us a call to get your vehicle prepared for these events.
Spring Track Day has been scheduled for Thursday June 11th at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario. This will be a Road Course Only event, we are not renting the drag strip.
Road Course runs rain or shine so please make sure you have proper tires for this event. Slicks will not be allowed to run in the rain.
Please feel free to “join” this event on Facebook but we will not be using this information as registration. All those wishing to participate in this event MUST call us ahead of time to register.
Fees for this event:
Road Course – $130.00 per driver (in advance) or $160.00 at the gate.
Spectators – $10.00 each at the gate. Spectators are welcomed to ride along as passengers so long as you follow safety requirements.
Safety requirements:
– All track safety rules apply. If you don’t know them, please check out the website – click here
**Track rules state that helmets are optional for Hard-Top vehicles, but we would encourage ALL participants to wear helmets.**

Please use caution while on the track. Everyone is out to have a good time and enjoy their vehicles while testing their potential. This is a great opportunity for you to improve on your driving techniques and make some new friends.
If you have any questions, please call or email as comments left on Facebook are easily missed.
We are taking registrations so if you would like to join us, please give us a call with your credit card number ready and we'll get you on the list.
Thank you!

ALL PRE REGISTERS IN THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY WILL BE ENTERED INTO A DRAW FOR A FREE TRACK DAY! THAT'S RIGHT, FREE!

ZR

Copied details here so we can keep thread in DaSilva forum clear to add additional details that may have been buried in the chatter.

Why would someone register early, for sure cool if your the lucky draw winner n end up with a track day for free but most important reason is to show we as a club are serious about seeing events like this continue in the future. To those that hold out till the absolute last second or day of and don't go because it's dismal looking in Toronto, you've missed out on some of the very best days we've ever had. Once and only once in all the years we've done track days has there been a full rain out but for those that didn't venture out it would look like we've had a bunch of em, not true. Several times we've arrived to it raining like hell only to have the clouds clear a short time later and within an hour or so out on a dry track having the time of our lives.
Even in the rain last spring, we had one hell of a good time. On slicks so track time was a no go for me but had a blast out there enjoying the Track Pack II cars the good folks from BlackStock Ford brought along for all of us to sample. Add to that chit chat with friends followed by surviving a lil track food and life was plenty damm good.

For those interested in Watkins Glen, here is a link to the info for a 2-day event in June run by some friends from Rochester, I've coached at it a few times. This is an offshoot from an event that the Shelby club in western New York used to put on, so typically there are lots of Fords in attendance and nice folks who love Mustangs and Shelbys.

https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/glen-event-series-2020-watkins-international-phoenix-cmr-459849

The Glen is about a 4-1/2 hr drive from the GTA. You may be able to do one day only at this event, not sure. This is a beautiful area of New York, and the facility and the track itself are top-notch. The circuit is much like the Mosport GP track, except it's another 3/4 mile longer!

It's incredible that this might actually open and we'll have events there. The way it was looking a month ago... I was betting we weren't going to have any events. Fingers crossed covid numbers don't increase while things slowly reopen.

It’s at a time like this that I’m reminded of just how awesome the people at TMC are who volunteer and organize the TMC/Dasilva track day events each year.

Without the Rick, Ross, Stephen and all the rest over the years, it would not have been as well done or as safely done.

Thanks, TMC crew.

Exactly Chris, they've tweaked it a bit every year and it's gotten better each time. Maintaining control over the proceedings is obviously the key!

I would also say making sure people check their “ive got the biggest d***” egos in the lanes plays a big part of it. TMC does a great job of making it about a fun day with cars and fellow car hobbyists.

Seeing the Facebook posts and videos shook me a bit. We've always had a "check your ego at the gate" policy and then we borrowed this from Fast Ed and his years as an instructor, "Just because your car is fast, doesn't mean you are". I hope our day goes smoothly.

EXACTLY. I saw someone commented that TMP had a marshal there. So asked what where they doing?? Sleeping? It fairly easy to see that kind of stupid driving and yank the car/driver and send them packing.

Recipe : take a bunch of young people (probably) with to much $$. Spend it all on they re cars.Put them in lock down for a month or so (prob more) . They watch all the Fast & Furious movies a few times . Open up the track a little late, and attendance is good because they re not at work or school. Don t have, enforce lapping Day Rule at the track = Pandemonium at the Track!! It s really sad that this happened, I really hope this doesn t ruin things for everyone... Side effects of this BS could be poor for the good guys and costly also :(

Thank you for the kind words guys. The credit goes to everyone who gives up a big piece of their day to help out with the event, it's a larger group vs what most realize, we all rock. Next and equally important, great group of people attending.
I totally get at least some would prefer we skipped the drivers meeting (or at least ditch the old guy n hire a super model) but it and the guidelines we tweak are in place to make the day smoother for all of us. As in the past, suggestions are always welcome.
The idea to have no passing in the Rookie group has netted 100% positive feedback. First few times out on the track you have enough on your hands without having to watch for approaching cars, remember which side they are allowed to pass on then signalling. Combine that with being able to easily cycle off n on the track if your holding up or being held up by others and a big chunk of the first time out stress is gone. Never gets old seeing the perma grin from rookies to the event coming off for the first time.

That's true, they really should have at least one other marshal station on a course that size ... when you're at the opposite side of the track to the pit in / out area, most people are not going to see what the flagger is signalling. Mosport DDC is a similar length and most events there run with a pit marshal plus 2 on track.

Us road course guys pay a fair amount of money, granted the track is open to use as much/little as you want.
Drag strip guys seem to pay pennies compared, and get an army of track prep people and timing
I wouldn't want to be the guy throwing out really pissed off people that just caused damage to multiple cars.
9/10 times one guy is enough if every one behaves, just not this time

It’s simple though. State it up front that you follow the rules or your kicked to the curb with no refund. Those idiots will learn really quick. I’m sure stupid driving was happening long before the smash up derby.

I'd love to be a marshal at a open lapping day. I think it would be funny telling someone driving like a retard to take a hike. Thanks for the $180... have a nice day.

Wow, that's crazy, if I was participating I would have done the same then tell the track to either maintain discipline or give me a partial refund. Glad to hear you were able to stay away from them.

Just remembered a story some of the guys at WNNOTC have heard ... I was there at a weeknight lapping maybe 10ish years ago when I had a crapper Taurus SHO for a track day car. Met some guys from the Ontario SHO club at TMP to hang out and turn some laps. While I was out bombing around, I got dive-bombed in the braking zone for turn 6 (the tight 120 degree left-hander) just before I was about to turn in. Luckily for the dude in the newish 911 making the pass, I typically do one last mirror check as a habit from racing before turning the wheel. I only had to wait another second or two and he was by, but I was thinking that there likely would have been some crying on his part if my rusty old crapcan had pranged his shiny machine. LOL

Us road course guys pay a fair amount of money, granted the track is open to use as much/little as you want.
Drag strip guys seem to pay pennies compared, and get an army of track prep people and timing
I’ve never understood this. Road course gets zero prep and zero supervision yet costs more. Drag racers would go absolutely ape shit if they didn’t get any track prep, timing, increased fees, ....or any combination of the aforementioned.

How much are the fees roughly for a track day ?

Club track day held by our partner
$130 pre registered
$160 at gate

TMP website lists open track days ranging for $140-180
$80 from 5-9 briefly from what I saw
- gas station 5-10 mins in town - no 93 or 94 , or jet fuel ; whatever you guys with fast cars are running- so bring your own if that’s the case.

If this is your first road course event I suggest you attend one of our club days- the circus show doesn’t exist there! The flag men will make sure of that lol
Three running groups , freedom to join each group.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200524/386460eed1226718e6ef72130af5fe74.jpg

Plus it’s a great learning experience- plenty of experience there, plenty of ride ons available. And rides alongs, plenty of track time- sometimes you’re out there alone!!! Everyone talking having a good time in the pits :)

Overall a fantastic day!

How much actual track time do we get vs the drag strip. How many years of strip time do you think it will take the average drag racer to equal one session on the road course?
Not such a bad deal all of a sudden.

Does this mean you won’t be dive-bombing me in the corners? :stickpoke:

We have to keep helmets on at all times?

Snack-bar will be take-out only?

Just a question! But when you do the track stuff, are you racing against people physically or is it time trials ? Essentially I just want to know if I’m risking smashing my own car

No it’s a track lapping session, go as fast as you are comfortable.
No one keeps official time, no passing in Rookie/ New group, and only 2 passing zones for intermediate/advanced group AND passing only permitted in those groups when driver being passed signals to do so( so both drivers on the same page)

For this years event you can only have passengers in your car that show up with you because of covid.

For people riding in the car, you both must either be wearing a helmet, or both not wearing a helmet.
Windows should be all the way up or all the way down.

If you've never been to a open lapping day event, going to one that is run by us is the best thing to do to get your feet wet. Like Newbie was saying, there is a Rookie group where beginers are learning the track and learning to drive there car at speed.
Rookie group has ZERO passing zones so you don't have to worry about someone passing you. People using there head and distance themselves accordingly to avoid contact.
If you feel like you are being held up by someone infront of you... all you do is come back to PIT OUT and rejoin in open track.

You have a vert right?
I believe the rules is without a roll bar in the car, you have to have a helmet in a vert. Don't quote me on that, maybe one of the other track admins can chime in.

For occasional usage they'll suffice, but there are proper automotive-rated helmets that are constructed differently. Changes to the way they would handle multiple impacts as if you were getting bounced around inside a car, as well as the fire retardant properties of the liner material.

Zippy

Probably going to be tough to buy a helmet these days I would imagine.
If you know the size of helmet you are looking for, you can probably order one online. When I was looking, Amazon had free shipping on most name brand road racing helmets. A couple hundred bucks gets you on track and it's something you only really need to replace every 5-7years depending on usage.

Rules page says must be a SNELL rated helmet, which only the more expensive motorcycle helmets are.

None of mine are SNELL rated so i'll have to pass one this one. Maybe next time.

I'm sure Rick will chime in to confirm, but in the past at this event I would say that people might have run with lesser rated helmets ... only speculating though. TMP staff won't be checking helmet ratings, this event gets run by the TMC volunteers.

TMP is helmet. Mosport you need a helmet and a proper roll bar for verts.
