Ha ha nice...you planted a seed before I got home so here's what I'm having tonight with one of the bottles we got last weekend. What's the cheese to the right of the brie?

You are a bad influence ya know ^^

That wine event last weekend was fun - we got to 22 of the 24 wineries over the weekend. Food was good too with some interesting food/wine pairing. Tried some toffee/caramel cheese at Stoney Ridge Winery (they have a cheese shop there) - it was so good...would pair nicely with a Late Harvest white (sweet) or a rich red (close to Port).

Francis Ford Coppola, made some for the greatest Films ever and carried on with an equally high standard at his Vinyard.

Only have a few left from this case, a little dusty from lying down in the cellar, but FFC's take on a Big Bordeaux is excellent after some time.

Mio is good stuff.

Ugh, just looked at Mio to see whether it's a lower sugar option to Ribena until I saw the ingredients: Propylene glycol (PG), acesulfame potassium and sucralose.

Plus on their website they do not answer the question of whether the colouring comes from ground up insects (a source of some food colouring) - they only confirm no "animal" by-product but stay silent on the use of insects.

Because it comes in several grades, PG has been used for a variety of uses. Industrial grade PG is used as an active ingredient in engine coolants and antifreeze; airplane de-icers; polyurethane cushions; paints, enamels and varnishes; and in many products as a solvent or surfactant. In all fairness, it should be stated that PG was only added to anti-freeze to replace Ethylene Glycol. It had been a problem because dogs often lap up puddles of anti-freeze.

The real question is, does it make a difference which one is used, since it is used in everything from
hydraulic and brake fluid to snack foods?

The answer is: it does and it doesn't. It is a toxin regardless of which strength is used. Propylene Glycol is a form of mineral oil, an alcohol produced by fermentation of yeast and carbohydrates. This gives it the designation of carbohydrate when used in foods.

The brine used in some commercial refrigeration systems is an antifreeze mixture; it is typically a water solution of calcium chloride or propylene glycol.

fuck it, better just stop drinking water altogether then, since it is also an ingredient in commercial refrigeration systems.

This, is actually really good. It's not a powerful flavour, very subtle. Not sweet, just a very brisk taste of banana bread. Not hoppy, not awful after taste, breath tastes like banana bread. The smell is like a fresh baked loaf too. Highly recommended if you like the flavour of banana bread. Also, it's still a beer flavour, so it doesn't feel like it's girly. I'll have to find some food to pair this with.

The Scary Reason Europe Just Recalled This Whiskey
Don’t worry, shot pourers—the U.S. has no plans to follow suit.
October 29, 2014 By Kristina Bravo
Kristina Bravo is Assistant Editor at TakePart.

Finland, Sweden, and Norway have recalled Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey, a drinking-contest staple that's popular for its sweet and spicy burn. But American frat boys need not panic: Thanks to more lenient standards in the U.S., the drink will stay on American shelves.

Fireball’s New Orleans–based maker, Sazerac, had to recall the product because batches meant for North American consumers ended up in Europe last week. According to the company, the recipes for the two markets differ because of a European regulation regarding one ingredient: propylene glycol.

A common food additive, propylene glycol is used as a thickener and a flavor enhancer in frozen dairy desserts and baked goods. Outside the food industry, it’s found in paint, plastic, antifreeze, and aircraft de-icing fluids.

High doses of propylene glycol (six grams per kilogram or more) have been found to cause kidney damage in many species and physical deformities in baby chickens. But the FDA believes it’s safe at the levels currently being used.

Sazerac uses less than one-eighth of the amount permitted by the FDA as a means of letting “the flavor ingredients mix together properly,” said company spokesperson Amy Preske.

“It’s important to note that there are different grades of PG,” she added. “Most consumers will be in contact with PG every day, when consuming products such as soft drinks, sweeteners, some foods, or in alcoholic beverages…. This is different than the grade used in industrial applications.”

Europe typically takes greater precautions when it comes to chemicals used in food. It took a petition signed by 50,000 people this year for Subway to remove a chemical in its bread that’s also found in yoga mats—an ingredient banned by the European Food Safety Authority in 2005.

Europeans can expect new batches of Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey, compliant with their regulations, within three weeks.

They are more forgiving of food ingredients in the US (big food lobby) - even something as simple as Smarties are different...chemical food colouring/flavour in the US and vegetable based in EU due to regulations. FDA even approved Chinese/Thai farmed fish/seafood grown in sewage-like water (commonly pig feces) which are more restricted into the EU (however, they have mad cow to contend with).

Smarties don't exist in the USA as we know them here, their Smarties are what we call ROCKETS, very different than the candy coated chocolate. http://www.smarties.com/history/

Smarties® are made 24 hours a day in two candy factories located in Union, New Jersey and Newmarket, Ontario. The company produces billions of Smarties® rolls each year.
Huh. Did not know.

Smarties are a colour-varied sugar-coated chocolate confectionery popular primarily in the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Greece, the Nordic countries, South Africa, and the Middle East. They have been manufactured since 1937,[1] originally by H.I. Rowntree & Company. They are currently produced by Nestlé.

Smarties are not distributed in the United States, except by specialist importers. This is because the American rights to the brand belong to the Smarties Candy Company, which manufactures its own hard tablet sweet under the registered trademark name Smarties. (In Canada, these are sold using the brand name Rockets.)

No Timbits, and no Smarties. Sucks to be American!

Funny, I've seen them in the US and it's the same ingredient list on the packaging as we have here in Canada which is different than the EU made version available in the British shops here or what you'd find in Europe.

Just did a search through the beer stores inventory checker, and it seems some Beer Stores out here in Oakville have some stock http://www.thebeerstore.ca/locations?pack=134-134041

Hey Man, thanks for asking, but I will be out that way Friday or early next week, just wondering if it's there at the shop, attached to the distillery.

I'll give them a a buzz tomorrow and find out.

I'm going to crack one of these soon too, so many great Canadian Whiskeys!

this is easily my favourite rye so far. It is aged in maple so it has a very, very subtle, maple note. not a syrup-y "I just had some pancakes in my drink" maple candy taste like all the new BS that is out now. They are a joke and an embarrassment. Collingwood got it right. Its fantastic.

Collingwood was a gift for a colleague at work that was visiting from the US. I thought I would give him a taste of Canada to take home.

The 40 Creek Evolution I grabbed simply because I saw it in this thread and it was at the LCBO I was at. Saved me a trip to Grimsby. I'll be saving that one for a rainy day.

The 40 Creek Spike was an impulse. I really hate all these "spiced" whiskeys which are basically a standard whiskey with sugar added. Some of the maple ones are just gawd awful. This is only OK. Save it to give to a friend that dropped his man card. Or if you need to mix something with Coke, this could be it.

Well, my WAD got the better of me this weekend. It is a difficult affliction to deal with. Others that also suffer from Whiskey Acquisition Disorder will know what I am dealing with.

It started with a trip yesterday to the Forty Creek Distillery, to have a look around, chat with the people there and, of course, have some samples and bring home a bottle or two. I spent 20 minutes or so speaking with some peeps, tried the new Double Barrel Reserve and the Confederation Oak Reserve. The former is a nice whiskey with a great balance of Bourbon flavour from the barrels they bought to mature this in. The Confederation Oak is an interesting story. They harvested 150yr old trees from near the distillery to make the casks. It was easily the smoothest whiskey I have had in a long time that wasn't an 18+ year old scotch. As I was trying it the woman says that it has won accolades for being the smoothest whiskey, but that the latest lot - Lot "E" - was not as nice as some in the past. It was the E that I was sampling and it was fantastic. She actually recommended that if I really wanted the best available at the moment, that I should try to find a lot D at the LCBO instead of getting the lot E they had at the distillery store. So I bought the Double Barrel Reserve there, and headed home.

But I wasn`t content and my WAD was in full swing, so today I headed to an LCBO in Richmond Hill (Yonge & Stouffeville RD) that showed online that they had some of the Confederation Reserve in stock. Sure enough it was the lot D that they recommended at the distillery. Sitting next to it were a few bottles Makers Mark 46, a special bottling of MM that has since run dry. It is difficult to find, and if you do I recommend you grab some. It is remarkable stuff and now will never be available again. Then in line I saw the Crown Royal abomination ... Apple flavoured. I bought it because I wanted the green bag.

I drove past the maker's mark distillery two weeks ago. Should have stopped in to check it out...

Nice haul Matt. Thanks for the info on the different lots. I am really enjoying my bottle of double reserve. I will look for the oak and pick that one up too. Not sure if it's a good idea to setup up a mustang cruise to the 40 creek distillery this season with the drinking and driving theme but it might be a good destination.

I have been thinking about that and one of the reasons I wanted to meet with them was to talk about group tours. the end of the tour includes 3 samples that are 1/2 oz each. So 1.5 oz is a bit on the high side for some peeps right before leaving. If we stay responsible and only taste, not drink the entire sample it'd be fine, but I bet some would want to have a DD with them.

Working in the Maritimes until the end of the month. Slipped over to see some friends in Charlottetown PEI tonight and had this micro brewery Gahan Iron Bridge Brown Ale at dinner, liked it so much I picked up some to cart back to Ontario when I drive home. Love my dark beers!

Okay with effing snow in New Brunswick today, and getting stuck between Saint John and Fredericton on a plow furrow, my Iron Bridge Dark ale didn't make it back to Ontario.

This was taken from my hotel room in Fredericton, lot has been plowed twice today. Shout out to Marcel, a trucker from Montreal who helped unstuck me, well he really had no choice I was blocking the exit ramp! The people down here heed the warnings, as he was the first person in 1.5 hours I saw on the highway, every one hunkers down and stays home. Not like the Big Smoke!
