^^^ are you snowed in?

Was yesterday, even Mcd's and Timmies closed shop here, had some Nutrigrain bars, pretzels and some apples from the hotels breakfast room for dinner. Treated myself to a 10 oz Rib Steak tonight to make up for it.

I always ask for local brewed and have to agree about selection, the Hilltop Pub must have had 7 or 8 different types of local ales, etc. on Tap. Nice to see them getting one over the big brewers.

First time I had a Guinness, many moons ago in Dublin, it was cold, it's only in England you get the more temperate Pulls of Guinness, they probably do it just to piss the Irish off. LOL

If you do The Tour, the samples are cold.

Further, the nitrogen filled widgets in the cans (I hope whoever invented those was made a KNIGHT or something Elevated because the idea is so brilliant) to simulate the Draught Experience at home, need to be cold to function properly.

Never understood the allure of warm fcking Beer, I drink beer to be refreshed.

been there, done that. gone are the days of correct temperature beer. New laws were passed all across Europe and the UK that affected the pasteurization process. some pubs would still have the kegs being pulled from a cool celler. Some even had 2 taps for Guinness - 1 was the old stlye kept at around 50 degrees, the other the new "Extra Cold" that was closer to 38. Around the time that I moved back home it was harder and harder to find a pub that still have the original on tap, everywhere was moving to the Extra Cold variety - even in Dublin at the tour (the original was no longer available the second time I visited). While pasteurization laws did change, the main focus behind Guinness Extra Cold was that it appealed to lager drinkers and those previously not keen on stout. the colder the beer, the less the taste buds can sense, so cold stouts and heavy ales were marketed to the broader beer drinking market. And it worked, especially in North America.

Beer was meant to be "room temperature", but this is from back in the day when the room was in an old drafty castle, so the rooms were in the 50 degree range, not 70 like our homes today. Once poured the drinker would hold the glass in their hands to warm it a little more. "Warm" is wrong. This isn't about warm beer, it is about 'chilled' vs 'cold' - with chilled being warmer than cold, but not actually warm. Its the difference between warm (70+), chilled (50s) and cold (just above freezing).

The widget is a tool created to release nitrogen into the beer to create the correct head once the can/bottle is opened. Back when it first came out and up until the late 90s, if the can was opened when not cold, the nitrogen expansion would cause the can to overflow before it could be properly poured. In the late 90s the widget was modified so that this would not happen and the can could be opened with the beer now chilled not cold, the way it was intended.

Yeah, same thing with red wine - served at today's room temps means it's typically too warm.

Not4you

Yes. And the convention of holding red by the glass in your hand vs holding white by the stem was to warm the red (since it was served cool - medieval room temp) and keep the white colder.

Most of the new ones are simply your Dad's whisky with sugar/syrup/flavouring added to them. Pretty much anything new out there now that is "spiced", or honey, or vanilla, or maple, or this apple one, are all just with additives. Some taste nice. This apple one isn't too bad. The Forty Creek "Spike" is actually really good with Coke. Crown do the best maple IMO. Knob Creek and Canadian Club are far too sweet. They are a nice way for the distillers to increase share since they are nearly all incremental sales - regular whisky drinkers won't replace their standards with them but they will attract current non-whisky drinkers to the category.

If you are looking for decent drams that have some unique flavour, look for single malt scotch or other whisky that is matured in specific casks that add flavour notes. Collingwood matured in Maple wood casks and The Balvenie Caribbean Cask matured in old Rum casks are two I highly recommend.

Where did you get that?

Of all places, the Shell gas station @ Yonge + Green lane. I bought the last two bottles they had last night. I did a little research on it and it seems that the Company changed hands and of course, "doesn't taste like it used to". Having said that, it is not owned by Coke or Pepsi which in this case is a blessing. Well having never tried the "original", I will go on record as saying that it's a top shelf DRAUGHT-style root beer.

An absolute treat. Though I have yet to find a solid local retailer, I am looking. It is available online through several outlets, but I'd like to find a place nearby that keeps it on the shelf.

Hopefully you can find a bottle or six...

So polished of the 12year old Small Batch and picked up this Limited Edition, I kept a shot in the 12year old to try them back2back before the 12year was done.

The Limited has an incredible amount of flavour and a strong nose, but it is not as smooth as the 12 year old, which also has great flavour too. I would buy the 12year old Small Batch again, over this new Limited Edition.

Same here. I was raised on CC and CR.. Did a blind taste test one night of all 3. For sure I thought I was gonna pick the CR but I picked the 40 and been drinking it ever since. I still buy the odd CC and CR but the 40 is my go to..

All the raving on this site, usually by BB, about 40 had me try it just fairly recently. My Makers 46 is collecting dust and I now have a collection of 40C bottles to choose from. I still prefer scotch but as a change of pace 40 Creek, specifically the Confederation Oak, is my go to.

I'm with you on the scotch. It's our preferred drink in our house. But since we only drink 18 yr old we don't have it too often... Mainly because I only buy it a few times a year at a hundo per bottle.. Lol

don't limit yourself to 18 year. There are plenty of excellent 12+ yr that are just as good. Older is not always better.

I have yet to find a 12 year old scotch that I'd put on the same level as an 18. Ive tried many a scotch out there under 18 but they just didn't cut it for me. I am open to suggestions though...

Not4you

Age is far less important than flavour profile. So it depends on what you like - peaty vs sweet etc. If you only like the peaty/smoky stuff, you could love a 12yr Ardbeg, but absolutely hate a 21yr Balvenie. Make your selections based on taste before year.

What do you prefer for taste profile?

HyperGT

I am a pretty big scotch drinker - I Only say that because I think you are missing out.
While an 18 is great, it is not my default go to evening drink...i do agree they are special and i have 10 or so bottles of 18+ on the shelf.

That said here are some great ones, for the evening drink that are 8/10 , all ones I have currently.

1. Macallan 12 - rivals most 18's
2. Talisker 10
3. Jura Superstition
4. Johnnie Walker Green - amazing tast and value, very hard to find
5. Aberlour 12
6. Cardhu 12

Try them, everyones pallet is different (i dislike the most expensive peaty scotches) but these are worth drinking if you like smooth.
Edit love taking about scotch at 9am on Sunday, lol

we should have a tasting party. everyone brings one bottle to talk about (tasting notes etc) and we cover off a spectrum from peat to sweet so that there is a range to taste from.

of course, everyone will need to bring their own DD too. lol

LCBO - it's done in small batches so not always available. Maybe do a search on the LCBO website to see if any stores have it and where. First had a radler in an outdoor beer garden in Munich and found out it's a popular spring/summer concoction in Germany (usually mixed with lemonade or grapefruit). Ever since then, I make it myself in the summer by mixing German wheat/weiss beer and lemonade but also keep these on hand since it came out - it's awesome and flavoured with real grapefruit unlike a couple of the other competitor versions released around the same time (I think it first came out last summer).

Proud/surprised to here from him that he is appreciative of the way we have brought(bringing) him up. he has brought many situations of his current friends situations to topic. Which are not so good.
We, as a couple, refused to bring our kids up with "stuff". We instead have tried to instill values. It has been a hard road as most of their friends were just given things without some sort of education from the parent/s.
I am glad to hear that our words are not falling on "deaf ears."

This was last night actually - had to do a dish for a team thing at work so dish of choice was a vegetarian biriyani. Washed it down with a complementary white wine.

Hey HyperGT - are you going to drink those bottles or are they being saved in a collection or for a special occasion? If you're tipping them back, call me, I'd love to try something like that!!

Oooh very nice! Heathrow?

thanks!

No cannot get those at the Airport, at least not the 79 for sure.

Matt, wont be cracking open the 79 but for sure the other one. Have a 1970 Highland Park (bottled by Gordon & MacPhail) that is already open. Happy to give you a taste- it is pretty unique.
