View Full Version : Low Fuel Light on S550

I find it very annoying on how early the fuel light comes on, I'm assuming all 550's are the same and it's not just a Shelby thing but comes on just before 1/4 tank which seems excessive.. I mean the 350 goes through gas quick, no question, I'm not complaining about that... just how long the light stays on the dash for, I'd rather not fill up everytime it gets close to 1/4 but the light drives me nuts, is there anyway to disable it?

I know most people will say you should fill up at a quarter anyways but...

I believe the tanks are saddle style all the way from 05 up which means at a 1/4 your actually at an 1/8" in each n should have long since put fuel in.

is the light using a mechanical level sensor or computed mileage?

no idea

find stated tank capacity.

go fill when light comes on and see how much you get in.

do the math

already done

60L Tank

Fill up 43L

Leaves 17L

= 28% (1/3) ish little less (if I'm doing this correct?)

I've only done this once though but the results should be very similar each time with in just a few either way assuming gas station is somewhat close/similar distance each time...

Probably not going to do the Black Tape mod but thank you lol

Was just curious... dunno

Weird looking gas tank.
Never saw one like that before.

I drive old junk, that's probably why.

I don't believe it is fuel level based on the new cars, but when the computer thinks it is 80 or so km to empty.

Case in point on some of the cars after a track day the light will turn on at just under half a tank. The rest of the time it is when the car is just under 1/4 tank.

Thanks Fab, not the message though, I'm talking about the actual Orange fuel light that comes one down below on the screen

Curious I’ve been told that not a good idea to run with low fuel in tank cuz debris in bottom of tank , any truth to this ?

Full can of SeaFoam added a couple or three times a year keeps the bottom of the tank pretty damm clean.
While picking up debris on bottom of the tank is less of a issue (vs internet hype) biggest reason for running above 1/4 tank is to A ~ ensures pump does not suck air on a turn or braking (while a consideration for your daily driver, on a boosted ride can mean difference between a blow up or not from lean pop), B ~ fuel in the tank helps to keep the pump cool n happy.
I've posted this before but worth saying again, on commercial duty vehicles we are seeing several times the normal fuel pump life adding an ounce or two of two stroke injector oil to the fuel on a semi reg basis.

I don't think you want to be running your car at anything lower than just under half anyway. For a road course car if the gas is sloshing around you don't want your pumps starved for fuel with body roll etc.

E85 burns 25% more than regular fuel as well, gotta keep it topped up.

Buys a Shelby doesn’t like gas stations :stickpoke:

Even with the baffling in the Cobra tank, aim for using top 1/2 ish on my own car. Keep in mind, most tanks have little to no baffling.
