Okay TMC, Ol Paint needs new shoes and I want to hear about your experiences with the following tires:

Michelin Pilot Sport S4
Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position
Firestone Firehawk Indy 500
Yokohama Adavan Apex V601

Thanks

I've heard nothing but good things about the Indy's including their price.

In that list you're comparing apples to oranges a bit. Those particular Michelin, Bridgestone, and Yokohama models are top tier rubber, the Firestone are a category below.

As mentioned the Firestones are great value for the money. Only real downside I noticed with them is the noise level on older road surfaces.

Here's a comparison test on the Tire Rack site that includes the Michelin and Yokohama:

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testDisplay.jsp?ttid=248

Also consider the Continental ExtremeContact Sport which is another top tier model, and in the bigger sizes is often $50-$75 less per corner than a Michelin 4S in the same size. I'm likely to go with a set of these on whatever I pick for street wheels for the 2017. If price is not an object, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S are still the ones to go with.

cheers
Ed

For pricing comparisons, TireRack prices for the Firestone, Yokohama, and Bridgestone are less than $20.00/tire difference. Yes, I know U$, but it would not be a crazy difference even with exchange factored in.

I want some real word street and track experience so that rules out the Doucheby owners. ;)

I think that you'll find a bigger spread in pricing between the Firestones and any of the others if you get quotes from any Canadian sellers.

Firestone’s $1080 or $1045 all in with install when I bought mine, then $75 rebate
255/285

Good value for the money
I liked them way more then my Continental DW it replaced.
Couldn’t get those Continentals off fast enough.

Next set maybe top tier :)
Rather have a new car

Great tire for the price! Buy a second set with the price difference lol- or go away for the weekend.
I’ve run these at TMP and in less than ideal conditions from minus temps to heavy rain - car is more or less a daily once driving season hits. Used them long driving to Miami , Washington, and New York .
Oh oh maybe I’m due for a new set:)

Does well at TMP too. I think Brad’s Dad was on a set last track day, also a red s550 Rick was behind the session before that.

Yes Brad's father has the Firestones on his S197, he likes them. Says they make a fair amount of noise when pushed on track but hang on well.

Don't have to worry about that, my newest helmet has earmuffs built in so driving on track is a rather serene audio experience for me now. :)

My brother in law has Indy's on his boosted 05. No curvy experience but I can tell you they hooked hard when he launched in a straight line.

I didn't notice them being loud but that's because he runs long tubes, no cats and S type mufflers. He likes it loud!

I put a set of 4S' on the Corvette last summer. They screamed like crazy the first couple times at the track, but got quieter after that. They don't do anything that great, but for the fact I can drive them on the street in a torrential downpour, and then on a dry track, they hold up pretty well. However, I preferred the factory run flat pilot sports.

I think it would be hard to get used to ear muffs for me in the car, the helmet already tones it down 'a little' but I feel like a need to hear the car to tell what it's doing...

Ed has a lot more experience and especially in real scenario race setups and I can see where that would come in handy for his endurance racing too... I go out for 10 or 15 laps at a time and it's bearable, he goes out for hours at at time!!

I'm sure like anything, just take some getting used too!

I've driven it, not as hard as he does, but it does hold on very well. For being a street tire at the price point it is, no complaints here grip wise.
The outer shoulder design does lead to some uneven tread wear tho which could lead to some road noise.
Would look into a tire with a more solid/wider outer tread block design
