View Full Version : Anyone remember much about carbs?

My 66 has a 302 with a 2bbl. The carb is an Autolite 2100 and is a whopping 287 CFM.

The car runs well and has great throttle response but can't get out of its own way. Someday, I'll pull the engine and do a mild street build but in the meantime I wondered if adding an aluminum intake and a 500 CFM carb is worth the trouble.

A newer design dual plane alum intake plus a decent carb is a good upgrade. Be sure to buy one that is easily adapted to linkage for your auto trans.

That was an upgrade I wanted to do on my 2nd 67 Cougar. My first Cougar already had the 4bbl and I noticed the difference, not so much when you are driving leisurely, but when you stomp the pedal way more acceleration.

What I remember about carbs is that they are basically a gasoline toilet.

Grew up with them but EFI is way better.
Rebuilt more than a few carbs in the past including lawn mowers.

A 600cfm 4 barrel carb and intake in your case would be a big improvement.

Check with some old time style garages or rod shops for guys still into carb work.
Some still know the older carb guys that are still around, usually working in their garages at home on new carb installs bought for hot rods and street cars.
Found a name from Jim's Speed Shop here in London a year ago, but can't find it now. Call store old guy is chatty & friendly.

My vote would be a holley sniper kit.

Al if you decide to go with carb rebuild the GHMA guys often use Vic Matkars carbdr1@yahoo.ca

Although we still rebuild / install a number of carbs every season, second Ross's vote for Holley Sniper. Done a few of them now, excellent results with all of em plus retains the carb type look under the hood.

Just installed a sniper to a jeep - that 4.2 ltr 6 runs mint and sounds mean with the Headman Header - you will need to upgrade to an electric fuel pump - install the o2 sensor - remove mechanical fuel pump and plug opening - a little pricey but will run awesome - no tuning necessary but it can be tweaked with the right distributer

Rick have you noticed that when you do a sniper install on a car with a big cam, that you lose some of that nice choppy lope sound at idle? I've read some reviews about this "issue".

Did a 2bbl kit on a Scout, worked like a champ there as well.
Going seeing you on the forum Mr, been way toooo long.

These retro fit injection systems sure look sweet and definitely the right call for a restomod build. For me , they're a bit spendy for a classic cruiser, especially once you add the supporting bits and pieces. Besides, part of the reason I bought a classic was because I get a kick out of the old school quirkiness of it. It sure is heck isn't for the performance. Lol

Thanks for suggestions. Seems a nice dual plane intake and good aftermarket carb will be a fun and worthwhile project.

Hmm, now what to do about the exhaust side of the equation.....

If you're going to stay carb, something like a 500 cfm Edelbrock would get the job done for your application and usage. They are usually bolt on and go after you set the idle speed and mixture, tend to be less fiddly than Holleys.

Yeah the last few years have been down and up for me. We'll need to catch up when this Covid business is all over.

Sine the 04 cobra, I bought a 96 cobra which was full of gremlins (it was Shawn Hyland's test mule - I didn't know lol). I sold it a year later. I went stangless for a couple years, then bought a 1970 coupe in the fall of 2019.

I'll get some pics up when i figure out how to post photos again. Its been a fun little project so far.

Yes, I was thinking a 500 would be a good choice. It might be a tad small if I decide to upgrade the heads someday but crisp throttle response is important to me so it'll probably work well even then. The 2100 has great off idle throttle response now but then ... crickets.

Good to see another classic in our midst. I think a build thread is in order.

If your thinking long term with emphasis on throttle response (with decent mileage tossed in for free) look to a Holley 600 or 650 spread bore. Well worth the effort to make it work, yes speaking from experience with several including Dad's previous 68 390 Galaxie 500.

Hey Al, this milder combo we built backed by an OD trans.
Roller 5.0, F cam, dual plane intake topped off with 600 electric choke Holley plus a set of headers.
Works equally as well behind an auto or stick car.

Even with a very driveable combo, lots of old school sound.
