Getting tired of my flow master mufflers (American thunder). After 12 years on the car they seem louder or I’m just older. Looking to replace mufflers only since tail pipes are ok and tangled around the pan hard bar mount anyway. Something that sounds nice but easy on the ear drums.
302 tick flow top end, long tubes and catted X pipe.

Borla XS are going to be some of the quietest.
Disliked Magnaflows on my former GT and current Cobra. Many report no drove, they droned like crazy on both cars.
Currently have American Thunder cat back on the Cobra, while it's getting louder as the miles go on (including a hair of drone now / could be cats deteriorating from spirited driving) still well within reasonable.

American Thunder on the 05 with long tubes and currently no cats (for testing only / have Gesi cats to go on), sounds like death out the back.

Car sounded amazing Brad sitting there idling at the track. I wouldn’t change a thing.

I have the same setup on my car, but yours sounds better. Trade?

+1 for the Dynomax, always loved how they sounded behind a SBF. Had them on my 87, also put a pair on my 68 Cougar with a pretty much stock 289 and it sounded great. Nice mellow tone that opened up when you got on it.

Im glad mufflers getting louder with age is a thing. I do like the sound it’s just too much sound.

Do they have to be on the car? Or is in the trunk acceptable?

I have Flowmaster 40's on my car and Mike (CDNFYRFYTR) noted that the car was pretty loud when we met up on Saturday (shampoo exchange) - I don't notice it any more so that may be aging ears or they're shot from the drone...lol.

I have a pair of Borla XS (fox body 2.5" offset) that were cut out of my car if you want to try - I don't remember how much of the tube was left on the muffler though (not sure if this would be an issue to re-weld flow tubes). It was cut off at DaSilva's several years ago to install the Flowmasters and I held on to them thinking I might try them again but never got around to it. Didn't have a lot of mileage when they came off as I was experimenting with sound. I might still swap out the Flowmasters at some point but just to get different exhaust sound versus quieter so the Borlas probably won't fit the bill.

Swapped out my flows after 25 years of drone for a set of ultra flows. Couldn’t be happier drone gone and better flow, I’m almost positive I picked up some power over the swap.

Not to hijack but I'm not loving the Magnaflow straight through mufflers I have on the 66. With no cats or resonators I find the system sounds too much like a straight pipe especially for a Sunday cruiser.

Would the Dynomax Super Turbos be a good choice for my application? I want some muscle car sound but a tame one.

Al as mentioned I had them behind the mostly stock 289 for my 68 Cougar, it had a factory style 2" H-pipe dual system. Mellow for cruising, bellowed a bit when you stomped on it. No cats or resonators on it, but the H-pipe and tubing diameter can change the tone and volume.

My system is a Magnaflow system. Stock manifolds bumped out to 2.5" front to back including an X pipe.

2.5" is going to make it louder regardless of what mufflers are on there ...

The X pipe will give it that raspy kinda sound. H pipe would clean it up.
