View Full Version : Neighbor harrasing me

I have a neighbor across the street from me that is incredibly annoying. She is in her 70s and she lives alone and has way too much time on her hands.

Every time I go outside, she goes outside and pretends she is raking her yard(her bag is always empty) and stares at me to see what I am doing. This happens multiple times per day, everyday, without fail. I have a stock 2020 F150 Raptor and when I started it up at 5pm in the afternoon, she screamed at me that she is going to call the police and report me. I almost feel uncomfortable going outside because it feels like I am being stalked. She also complained about my Mustang recently even though I don't store it at my house and haven't for many years. I am not sure what her deal is.

Additionally, she has done the following in the past:
-Reported the cats that I feed to animal control because I feed them(they do a great job of killing rodents :) )
-Reported to the police that I am operating a rooming house. The police came to my house and I told them that they need a warrant but for the sake of not wasting their time, I shown them my house and there is clearly no rooming operation here
-Reported to the police that the car in my driveway, that is plated and insured, has been sitting in my driveway too long and its junk
-Gloated about being happy her husband died and he is glad she is gone
-Reported her neighbor to the police because she claimed they were very loud and disruptive at night....and also said that they own Ferraris(they didn't lol). She was legitimately racist.
-Tried to get all my neighbors to sign a petition to complain about the LOUD exaust on my bone stock, ecoboost, Raptor
-She reported me as being some sort of a drug dealer to the police....because I guess it must be hard to wrap her mind around people owning multiple cars.

...and so on...you get the jist.

So, what would you do? I have been ignoring her and not giving a fuck but I feel this B is crazy

Plant drugs in her house and call the cops and say she’s dealing ?

If you've documented everything, then contact a lawyer and sue her for harassment and/or deformation of character.

Had a few annoying neighbors at my old house. At first, they got on my nerves, but I realized that if I ignored them, carried on as normal, and even laughed when I knew they could hear me, they settled down. My mother-in-law is 93 and has been alone for many years. She acts similar to your neighbor. Complaining of dogs and cats in her yard, who is parked in front of her house, leaves that blow into her yard, etc. Like you said, she has too much time on her hands. If it was me, I'd just smile and wave each time I saw her, keep doing what I'm doing and don't worry about it. She can call the cops all she wants, but if you are doing nothing illegal, then so what?

I feel for you man. Not sure what i would do. Tough situation...i would probably get in trouble...i told neighbor i was going cut his tree that is over my pool, he threatened throw a rock at my car...i called police and they told them that my right to cut tree over my property. Then day of cutting tree he called police on me and asked police to stop me...police told me to have a nice day...in my younger days i would have got in trouble...

Yes tough situation. Neighbour is being unreasonable. I’m not sure fighting back or trying to muscle a response is a good idea it will likely make things worse. It’s already clear she is willing to lie (sounds like knowingly lie) to the police to get them to your house. At this point it might be considered harassment. A lawyer could help with that. People have suggested ignoring and smiling. Killing with kindness can be a good strategy but I really understand your discomfort of working on your own property.

in the fall drive around and gather leaves from trees and in the middle of the night spread them all over her lawn so she has something to rake when she is giving you the dirty Harriet stare down....maybe order pizza at 2 and have them delivered to her house by mistake - sprinkle cans of tuna on her lawn cats like tuna... good luck man this it what happens when some people get old...I'm worried cause I think I married a cross between Mrs. Kravitz and Nancy Grace...glad we can't see our neighbours but we do have one knob...

The High Commander is not that bad... lol - just me being me

I have the same deal but it's an old guy. Every time I'm outside he goes outside and waters his garden of overgrown weeds and stares. Or he will sit on his porch and glare at the entire neighborhood from 12-8pm drinking beer and getting increasingly abrasive. He tells me I'm supposed to be opening the sewer grate in front of my house and cleaning out the storm sewer so his house doesn't flood during rain which is insane and also not a homeowners responsibility. He has hit my truck, and others cars when we park on the road in front of our houses because "its our fault for parking on his street". He's also sprayed his hose in the windows of multiple people driving by claiming they were speeding (they weren't). Each time the police are called he goes full Dr Jekyl and plays the "I'm just an old lonely man, I don't know what you're talking about, so sorry" or tells them its because of all the nasty "speeders" on our street and he's tired of kids being hit (no kids live within 5 houses of me and no kid has ever been hit by a car on our street). I want to move so fucking goddamn badly because of him honestly there are times I see him outside and I nearly black out from uncontrollable anger. I've warned my gf that if he ever sprays me or the mustang with that stupid fucking hose I'm going to jail 100% that day. Honestly it took me way too long to even type this post as I kept visualizing what I'd do to him and feeling my blood boil.

Shitty neighbors sucks, lawyers is really the only avenue you can explore at this point which is costly and zero guarantee of any change.

Buy some Borat and Ali G outfits to do your gardening work..she can stare all she wants then.

I'm surprised the police don't treat her calls about you as nuisance calls now after a few false starts and speak to her about it themselves.

Bad neighbours are awful, and yours sounds really bad. I'm lucky that my worst is a retired guy with a manicured lawn and garden who likes to tell everyone what their gardens should look like. I've been taking out overgrown stuff and replacing it with various native plants, seeds and bulbs. He isn't the biggest fan but screw him, I like native plants.

If I were in your place I'd become a 2 stroke enthusiast. Start repairing old boat motors, scooters, small equipment.

Your neighbour may have some dementia occurring. My mother inlaw lived in her own home until her early 90's, and the last 7 or 8 years she was just out right mean to the family that shared the driveway with her. The driveways were so narrow that you had no choice but to step on to the neighbours side, and she would wait until he was in the driveway and she would poke her head out and tell him to keep to his side. In the winter the poor guy couldn't win, if some of the snow blew over to her side she would be out brow beating him. Until this time she was a model neighbour, letting his kids park on her side (she never had a car after my father in law passed away.
When she went to a home we apologised for her irrattic behaviour, thankfully he understood what had been taking place.

We had a couple really bad neighbours next to our store for awhile.

Scream at customers for parking in “their” (one of the clearly marked public) spot, kind of bad neighbours. The leave bad reviews on your business page because there was a truck parked in a clearly marked public parking spot kind of neighbours.

Trust me I understand the stress.

My advise just go about your business.
If they are that bad to you EVERYBODY knows how bad she is.

Next time she calls the police offer them a coffee and thank them for their time. Trust me by now they know

As bad as it sounds give it time and she will literally just go away.

Update:
She is now watering her lawn at 9pm the moment I go outside, while its dark. She hires gardeners to do her yard work and basically goes outside to pretend she is doing something while she, very obviously, is looking at what I am doing. Then she circles the perimeter of her property the momenb I open my garage and starts saying: what is he doing??? As if I can't hear it.

Bitch is cray. lmfao. Oh and she has only one window facing my house and that light is on and I can see her sitting on a chair to see what I am doing...so....yeah. -facepalm-

Some good advice offered by others here; just ignore and/or kill her with kindness. Have you ever spoken with her? It does sound like she may have some mental issues.

I try my best to keep peace with my neighbors. When we first moved into our last place (there 17 yrs.), the neighbor directly to the north of me thought we had called the humane society on them because they left there dog chained up in the garage. Told him no, and that was thankfully the end of it. We were cordial after that. The neighbor on the other side of me....couldn't have been better. We chatted regularly and helped each other out whenever needed, i.e. do you have tool X, Can you help me with Y, keep an out on the property when either went away/collect papers, etc.

We are about to move into our new place here in Calgary and I'm hoping and praying we have good neighbors again....

Hope things settle down and you can enjoy your neighborhood again.

Had a slight run in with the neighbour. So far nothing pre than him giving me an angry phone call but I am a little pissed by it.

We have a shared fence line. My side is the long of my small bush property. My side is well ma in trained with dead fall cleaned up a trail walking trail that follows the longs of said fence line.

His side is about a 20 foot water shed between the fence line and a field. Over grown. Full of dead fall and brush piles. Has never been maintained other than two clear spots one at each end.

The fence line itself is a row of trees directly on the line. Confirmed by survey and stakes. The trees are Ash and years dead standing. Every time the wind blows branches and trucks of trees fall down.

We are two years at this property. Last spring we ran into the wife at a local event and got chatting. I asked about the possibility of hunting since we have dear back and forth across the line daily and about me cleaning up the dead fall on the fence line. She said yeah don’t think it will be a problem. Art (the previous owner of our property) used to hunt and clean up all the time, turns out this was the reason for the clear spots in either end.

So over the last few months I have taken it upon myself to clean up fallen trees. It started with a couple that fall onto my side. And while I was cleaning I took all the good wood. Dragged all the brush to my burn pile and cleaned up the tree from both sides of the fence. I have also taken down a couple that were broken and leaning. Since there were a danger by the path that my wife and kids walk daily.

Today he called all pissed off demanding to know why I have been on his property taking HiS trees. I calmly explained the conversation we had with his wife. And said I apologize if I miss under stood her.

So I reiterated that I wished to clean up the remaining dead trees from the fence line. And he demanded I don’t touch HIS trees.
I said that the only ones I’m concerned about are the ones directly on the fence line that are dead and dropping pieces. They are jointly owned due to being on the property line and are a hazard. He said again those are his trees and if I wish to discuss them we need to meet there and he will show me the property line

I know the property line I have stakes and a survey. I also know that by Ontario law trees on the line are jointly owned and both parties must maintain and be called if any work is going to be done. (Which I thought I had done with his wife)

Not sure my next step. Debating sending a notice letter telling him I’m putting up a fence and then having the entire line of trees removed and a fence put up directly on the fence line.

Or since they are “his trees” sending him a letter requesting clean up for safety reasons and if he ignores it then I can report it and have the municipality come in, clean it up and then send him the bill.

I'd meet him at the trees and try to diffuse and then discuss future actions. He's mad for some reason. Find out that reason and address it (if reasonable). My first "guess" would be firewood, and him thinking you were stealing his fuel. Having survey paperwork at the ready might be useful too as he may have the wrong idea of where it is. Unless you plan on moving, making peace is the best option.

Did just that. Took some time to cool off first and then met him on the fence line. He had talked with his wife and actually apologized for being “short”
Apparently on the other side of his field he owns the bush. And the neighbor on that side had been coming in and cutting down trees.

I told him that wasn’t my intent. Everything I took was either down or broke and hanging posing a hazard. And I offered him all the wood back since it sitting on my wood pile.

He told me to keep it. Left on good terms but made it clear that the dead stuff needs to get taken care of and if he dosnt want me doing it then he needs to.

I’m get that the problem is. I deal with that crap on a daily basis Threw work. Sucks to get it on the weekend too. I don’t like feeling guilty for something I got permission to do.

Looks like he stood up the “good” fence and re strung new fence on the spots that the PO had opened up.

He has also made it clear since out last talk that he has no intention of cleaning up the dead trees “my property my business” was his response ignoring the 10 inch round, 20 foot long tree top that has landed on my side of the fence. Directly across my walking trail the last storm we had.
The fence sections he “fixed” he just threw the old fence wire and rotten posts on my side of the property line.

Kinda gives me an idea what it’s gonna be like moving forward.

I suppose from here on out I can itemize clean up and send him a yearly bill. Ontario law states that he is responsible for ensuring his trees are maintained and don’t pose a threat of injury or damage to a neighbours property. Any clean up from his trees he is liable for.

Worst part is he is a “realtor” so he knows all this. Or at least should.

Sending a bill will make friends.

Look up the "Benjamin Franklin effect". Goes the opposite of what you think. Getting him to give you a small favor will make him more amenable. Performing a favor has the opposite effect, making a person feel indebted and sometimes even resentful.

Ask for help starting an engine you've unplugged a coil wire from or something that offers low effort, low time commitment and successful outcome. Compliment him with "you've got the magic touch" when his twist of the key made the difference. People skills aren't just for work.

Being friends is easier than being enemies, and more fun.

I own a stacked town home... so someone lives under us.
Since the first day, this lady (asian lady) and her husband harassed us about the noise. The day we moved in, we were taking stuff up the stairs... she says her son is trying to study and cant study because of the noise... absolutely un-fu##king believable. We've never had this kind of issue anywhere we've lived.

To accomodate her requests, I put a nice thick rug with additional sound proofing under it, put soundproofing under the couch, my tv stand and even in my kitchen cabinets! Even then, i'm getting complaints from her for our noise levels doing regular every day things!

I had my parents and in-laws over one night, no drinks, no music - nothing... we were sitting in the living room having tea and conversing - this lady starts banging on our door saying we are too loud and they're trying to sleep (this is at 9:30pm! on a Friday)
She complained to the Condo Board numerous times as well and they said there was no issue with our noise levels... I even had our older condo super send us a reference letter stating she had never had any noise complaints from our unit.

She called YRP on us twice when we had company over during thanksgiving! The officer advised us we did nothing wrong and that our noise levels were perfect... the officer had stood outside our front door for 15minutes and said he didnt hear anything from our unit.
That was the last straw. After the officer left, I plugged in my subwoofer, cranked it up as loud as it would go and put it directly on the floor to give her something to complain about.
Every time after that, I pretended like I had a roach infestation and walked while stomping my heels.
They moved out after 2 weeks.... its been 2 years, they've gone through numerous tenants and they're finally selling the home.

Its been staged and been on the market for 60 days, no luck. Part of me feels bad for them... but another part of me says fukk'em

lacking clarity

What i got from that was:

Asian complainer moved out following your declaration of war with subwoofer and tap dancing. The complainers then rented to numerous tenants and are now trying to sell unsuccessfully?

If I got that correct I would feel zero sympathy. They made their bed.

My suspicion is that only one of the couple was the issue.

I have great neighbors on both sides. North is 72 year old widow who's drive I clear and house I maintain. South is a younger couple who's furnace I fixed and shared some of his really good tequila. South neighbors are newish. Prior owners were a 30's couple I also got along with. The neighbor wife got into a tiff with woman 2 doors to the south. Result was they sold at a small loss. Months later the husband contacted me and we had some convo. I thanked him for selling to the new neighbors who are great.

His reply "we weren't so lucky with our new neighbors".

My assessment is the husband is a doormat and tolerated (enabled) princess behavior which is only feeding the beast. Society encourages this as well. Just look at all the videos of restaurant freak outs and other out of pocket behavior. Vote for equity, higher taxes and ever growing entitlements and that's what you get.

Neighbours can make or break a house. I'm lucky. One side older retired couple, say hi and chat every once in a while. Other side 60ish couple and her daughter (mid 20s?), his son was there for a while too but moved out. Borrowed his table saw once, lent him my chainsaw once. Otherwise they largely keep to themselves but are pleasant. Heck, the daughter had a pool party and it wasn't any louder than normal conversation. People behind us are great, his youngest is a year older than my oldest so they play together. Also he grows his own and shares which my wife appreciates. Across is a younger guy, no issues at all. Diagonal is an architect who also runs a construction company who did our designs and is doing our renovation when we finally get permits. Except for nosy Dave on the other diagonal it would be perfect.
