91 Fox body...

if the SPOUT connector is laying on a spark plug wire...

can this cause the TFI module to run intermittently...killing the system?

beauty question..right?

Highly doubt it.

Highly doubt it.

ignish just dies in the ol beast at times...it even backfired out the exhaust

ran great up to about 5000 rpm then BAM!...

its NOT a missfire...like a bad wire or plug...just cuts out...then back on

salt & pepper shakers?...bad TFI module?

I always keep a spare known to be good TFI on hand for testing.

yep...lemme know when you need a couple...

hate chasing down intermittent problems...Ill find the culprit & post it up when I do

initially I thought the MSD went south...so I bypassed it...

its NOT the MSD...runs fine when I hooked it back in the circuit

Weird stuff like that, start with checking / cleaning all grounds first.
When I drove a Fox, had a spare TFI + tools in the glove box.

My car did exactly what you are describing.
Put in aftermarket TFI from 2 different manufacturers and it did the same thing.
Seems only the OE Ford module actually works right.

OEM Ford or nothing.

hey Ricky...this is interesting

somewhere I saw a small box said Car Quest or NAPA or something on the packaging...containing a TFI module

when the part came outta the box it said Ford on it...think it was the black one...not the grey

whats a new one worth?

I had intermittent dying on my engine too. I would be driving along, it would cut out , then come back on. Sometimes shut off then I'd have to restart. Pip sensor inside the distributor was going and when the distributor was pulled Rick noticed that the bottom of the distributor where it turns the oil pump shaft had started to crack, that was an MSD distributor. Replaced with stock Ford distributor and new Ford Pip and no more issues. TFI was fine.

New Ford TFI from a Ford dealer is $300+. Same Ford one from Rock Auto is about $160ish

think it was the black one...not the grey

That won't work on a Fox.

Interesting, I think it might depend on which TFI. For my 1991 manual transmission, Motorcraft DY 1074, which is not listed on Rock Auto right now.
The two receipts I have for this part # are from Ford on June 7, 2011, price was $162.13 + tax = $183.11 and my receipt from Rock Auto on Oct 1, 2013 was $116.28 and landed at $150.75. I bought this last one from Rock Auto when dealer said the list price on these units had been raised to close to $300. Ford often raises the prices on old low volume parts.

I actually don't see that DY 1074 listed on Rock Auto on any more and it looks like there is a Ford replacement # of DY 1284 which is only $60.51 at Rock Auto.

DY 1284 now covers both Manual and Automatic applications.
