From everyone I have talked to crossfit = injury at most clubs. Take it slow if you are coming off a bad back.

Seems to be the consensus, gotta slowly ease into it. thanks...

I am starting crossfit in the next week or two (depending on the weather as cycling season winds down). I did a few classes a couple weeks ago to get my feet wet and enjoyed it immensely, but can definately see how injuries can occur to those trying to lose weight and get back in shape. With a bad/ healing back, you should be very careful

Quit drinking coke and soft drinks for 2 weeks already and going strong. Still gotta deal with random cravings by food association (so used to having a nice cola with a steak, burger or pizza). How is everyone else doing? Any food eating habits any of you just kicked?

Coke is killer for me. Starting fresh in the new year. There are too many temptations right now. Going to stop drinking pop, eat better (and less) and workout everyday. I should hit my goal by Spring.

That's the number I want to hit again also or even dip below it. Last time I weighed myself a week or so ago I was at 223.5. Starting up again after Christmas and hopefully stick to it this year. Picked up a pretty much mint Bowflex Exceed Plus today to add to my power block dumbells.

Thats the spirit! Also I find it easier to stop one habit at a time. Start with going child turkey with cola and substitute it with water. Once you feel confident enough, make a slow but dramatic change to your eating habits. I find it to stressful to stop cola then reduce food consumption.

I'm going to regularily post here from now on to help some of you stay motivated. I'm comparing this achievement to the hard laborous work I put into getting my mustang. If you have a goal and you want something, sacrifices have to be made.

I want to look lean again and in order to do that I have to cut back on sugary stuff and of course, overeating. Its important to go easy on it as it is very easy to say "fuck it" and indulge on food.

Nothing tastes better than looking thinner!!!

Alright its about time I join you guys here, I'm 27 have no excuses, being off work I've been depressed and am getting no physical activity and its showing.
Ive started trying to get my meals in order the first step is breakfast smoothies.
Ive had one daily for about a week now and love them. Water vegan protein powder (2serving of veggies and 20g) and whatever fruits I'm feeling normally a mixture of apple, banana and mixed berries.
Next stop is to kill my cola addition, I know its shit but it tastes so good.

Welcome! If I can stop cola anyone can loll It was difficult but it may be easier for you since you are relatively free. If you can, hitting the gym will help since you are consuming protein powder every morning so it's good to utilize it. Stay strong!

More good reading.

You just started a weight loss routine, your first two weeks you’ve dropped 10 – 15 pounds and your doing awesome! And all of a sudden your in your third week the scale doesn’t seem to budge. You still feel great and clothes are fitting better, but your weight isn’t going down. What the heck is going on? http://joefitness.com/wp-content/uploads/digital_bathroom.jpg (http://joefitness.com/wp-content/uploads/digital_bathroom.jpg)

The culprit: The scale.

Like I mentioned in my 25 fat loss tips post (http://joefitness.areavoices.com/2012/03/30/25-fat-loss-tips/), the problem with the scale is it’s inability to tell you the whole story of your weight loss. When you step on the scale it tells you every going on as a whole. It doesn’t tell you body fat changes, what you ate, the amount of water in your body, swollen muscles, and a number of other things that effect your weight.

Using the scale to measure your progress is okay, but don’t just depend on one measurement. Here are a few better ways to measure your progress:

Performance Goals
Instead on focusing on the fat loss result, focus on what produces the result. Make it your goal that you will go to the gym 3 days a week or eat like a diet rockstar for 6 days in a row. Maybe it’s to bike around the city limits or to finish your first 5k! Whatever it is, track it, improve it and you will see results!

Dress Size / Waist Size
One goal of weight loss is to look better right? Well why not measure your progress with clothing! My favorite clothes to use is jeans. They tend to be unforgiving and you can definitly tell when they are fitting looser! Whether it’s a dress or a pair of jeans, pick some clothing and track your progress weekly.

Pictures
Before and after pictures can be an amazing tool when it comes to tracking your progress. Once a week take a picture of your progress and watch your body transform!

It’s not all about the number on the scale. Just remember, a scale is just one measurement that tells you the whole story at once. Pick a few ways to track your progress and watch your success!

We get drilled to death on the TV etc that eating healthy n loosing wt is all about the scale. As such, we are judging the win / loose column on it vs what really matters, how you feel and how you look. In my own case, see's me get discouraged n I drift back to the same old same old. Scale says I'm doing ok but clothes n how I feel say I'm definately on the right track.

I still check the scale but I'm not letting it sway me. I have to admit it makes me feel better seeing that weight drop on the scale. Been off the good eating habits a bit but hitting the gym pretty well. I could do better, as always. Work really stressed me out so it didn't help to keep me steady. yup scale doesnt tell the full story. muscle weighs more than fat. and building muscle burns fat. so if you are doing it right, there will come a time when fat loss does not equal weight loss, because you are building muscle mass.

Mixing it up with a comeback to the gym (yesterday). Nothing tastes better than being slim.

The more portions the better. You just need to control portion size. When trying to loose fat, cut portion size but eat 5-7 times daily. Drink lot's of water especially before eating. This tricks your body into thinking it's more full. And exercise plays a big roll. Your body needs to build muscle to burn fat.

This is a lifestyle change peeps, not a diet change. If you don't want to put in the work, you won't get the results.

I love food too. 5 years ago I weighed in around 165lbs @ 5'11". Thought that was pretty normal, but I look back thinking that was probably a little on the slim side. I got into hitting the gym and trying to put on muscle. I learned the only way to gain size is to eat like a beast. I had to force myself to eat sometimes because I knew that's what I had to do. Now my body knows how much I eat and I don't have to force myself, I'm just hungry all of the time now. Last summer I weighed in at 230lbs. Most of which is muscle. I'm very happy with my progress. Now I'm around 220-225lbs. But if I just sat around and ate the way I do I'd probably be 300lbs and obese. I train pretty hard, lot's of heavy lifting. I know my goals and I know that they are not achievable by sitting on the couch.

Make sure its lactose free if you have any intolerances as that might cause bloating and digestive issues. Make sure you drink plenty of water in conjunction.

You can always try soy protein as an alternative. And it is always important to select protein with the least amount of crap in them. When selecting flavours, vanilla or chocolate are the best choices unless you can get a flavourless one.

The best alternative is to not use protein supplements and eat real food when you can.

Well, bow flex just arrived today. I now have a bowflex, treadmill and heavy bag. There's no more excuses. Time to stop being fat. Gonna hit up Herc's tomorrow for some supplements and information.

Currently sitting at a depressing flabby 260lbs. The heaviest I've ever been.

Look forward to building the new me tomorrow. Right after I assemble the bowflex lol

It kicked my ass!!! I'm gonna be really sore and regretful tomorrow.

Not as strong as I used to be. Not even close. If I ran into myself 10 years ago I'd kick my ass lol

i use Vega Sport, no whey or soy. Was recommended by my trainer. Great stuff but expensive. Gluten free, no sugar ADDED.

Think I saw that Vega sport at shoppers. Expensive yes, It's like $75 a container! I've never had issue with whey protein so I'll be starting back on that now that my gym is ready to go.

I think Vega sport tastes too gritty. I found a tasteless pumpkin protien that I really like. Pairs well with smoothies and other meals.

Have fun with your new gym! Looks awesome! :)

Haven't posted on this thread for a while.

Congratulations to all who are working toward their goals.

My progress:

January 2015 - 247 lbs

April 15, 2015 - 216 lbs.

Still about 10 or 15 to go.

Accomplished through a complete change in diet. I have dumped breads, pastas and all starches. Replaced wheat flour with almond flour for baking. Lots of veggies and meats (I'm no vegetarian).

Additionally, I had an upper respiratory infection that knock me out, but (not in the best manner) I lost 12 lbs in four days.

Can you post a pick, a friend and I were talking and she mentioned that pumpkin protein
I use Vega protein and greens in my smoothies and it doesn't integrate well and comes out tasting chalky (and thats after going through a 1000W blender)

I like the brand Omega Nutrition. This product mixes well with almost anything. I put it in smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, stir-frys, baked goods, sauces, ect. There isn't much taste to it besides a slight nuttiness. It's good stuff and priced very well.

Organic Garage in Oakville sells it.

only 9.5g?? seems low. I use Promasil or Hexapro, they are 22g and 25g respectively. or is this intended to be a food additive rather than a 'shake'.

Gabe

Note the portion size, that is only for a 15g portion. The mix I take is 41g scoop equates to 22g of protein (more or less 2:1), where this is 5:3 or 24.6g per 41g scoop

Hey Rick, anything stopping you from adding glucosamine To your diet? Great for joints etc....

With all the rucksack marches and miles I have logged on my feet, I always felt it necessary to add glucosamine into my daily vitamins. Not only helps with joints, but good for muscles too.

Appreciate the suggestion. Swelling from the knee down is a clot in my right leg, doc is hesitant to operate as they have no idea what caused it and feel it may cause a larger issue. Meds I'm on (rat poison) can't make big changes in my diet etc without it going off kilter so it comes down to small changes and monitor only. Foot swells so much, keep wrecking my shoes. :)

I just started a low carb diet. I have 3 Co workers that placed a bet at 50 each that I wouldn't lose 30 pounds in two months. My brother in law is betting me 200. Hellava incentive to do it! Just had only 700 calories for the day. Ate bok Choy and salsa salad, 200 grams of chicken breast , an orange and a small yogurt. Also worked out a bit in my room. Now I'm gonna go free running /walking around my neighbourhood

700 calories... One meal for me :encouragement: Have cut back a little on training, just means I hurt more after each session now. Still strong though. Atlas stone record of the year so far for me, #350 stone over 50" bar. #320 stone over 50" bar for 3 reps. Hit a #300 bench press for a single. Hit a #160 circus dumbbell with each hand. #245 log overhead press. #445 squat for a single. Not bad... Progress has been slow to say the least but I also weigh 10lbs less than this time last year and I'm not eating as much. Wife likes it though lol. Did some grip strength training last night after hitting curls for girls. We did farmer handle holds with 2" handles. Then we timed ourselves. #200 per hand held for 1:01 with 2" handles. Ya my hands hurt after that. Little tender today.

Hope everyone is staying on track or at least not going off track too far. Keep it up, it's worth the lifestyle change. Your body will thank you down the road.

So from my understanding losing weight not only requires exercise but more so a change in lifestyle and eating habits. I spent a month watching my calories using the My Fitness App on my phone...... I did really well, I did struggle with what foods to eat.... and after a month started slacking with recording my daily intake of foods. I'll admit it was good, I was able to discourage myself from over eating, late night snacking and junk food all together. Looks like I'll need to start again. Physical activity is another task all together!! One at a time.....

That's good! I used my fitness pal (I still use it a bit) but I can't follow through most of the time. So far I've been weighing my food portions, mind you, I'm on a very intense diet and it's not for everyone.

I say 80 percent of losing weight is lifestyle change in the form of eating habits.
There is no way around it unless you work out rigorously and burn thousands of calories per workout. Most of us don't have time to work out at such an intense level nor the energy especially after work.

I recommend slowly limiting portion size and fighting yourself from over eating bad foods. Don't eat out more than once a week. Try to go for a brisk walk for 25min a day. Walk before you run :)
