Wanna loose wt or just plain get in shape. Impractical to meet n do as a group, how about sharing your starting point and keeping us up to date on your progress. For some it's gonna be fast, for others, not so much. Key is to make a date to start and keep at it. My start, next Monday. Will weigh in and update from there. Yours can be anytime that works for you.
Crapola food n pop, prepare to get kicked to the curb.
Exercise my long lost friend, coming for ya buddy.

You got the ballz to do it in the forum?

Good idea for a thread. Some of us are motivated to mod out rides when we see what others are doing. This might have the same results. I started a diet on Feb. 28 that was designed specifically for rapid weight loss prior to surgery. The good news is I don't require surgery now and as a bonus in 21 days I have lost 21lbs. Starting weight was 228.8 lbs and as of this morning I weigh 207.6lbs. I am 6'1" and my goal is to get down around 198lbs and build back muscle not fat. The next 10lbs to lose will be the hardest for me. Good luck everyone and it should be interesting to read about everyone's experiences with trying to lose weight.

As some of you may or may not know....back on Feb 16, exactly 2 months before my 43 birthday, I had a major heart attack. I'm 5' 9" and weigh 199lbs.
(I think more muscle than fat ...meh) When I entered the hospital that day, my blood pressure was 252/157. (not a typo...normal BP is 120/80)
So as you can imagine, I've made many lifestyle changes. Quit smoking, was never much of a drinker. a case of beer lasts almost a year. No more pop, no more coffee either...the odd decaf....and a lot more fruits and veggies.
I've gone from never taking pills ...to 11 per day now. Currently my BP is around 156/112. Still extremely high. This is why I'm eager to start this diet.
I personally haven't tried this yet...waiting to get approval from my doctor. However ,I do have a couple of coworkers that have been on this diet.
Both have lost about 21 lbs in only 10 days. During those 10 days, everything they had was juiced. No solids.
Enjoy and Good Luck.
Joe

1 step ahead of you. The wife keeps taking jabs at a second chin that's deveoloping. Started on Monday. 162 lbs to start. Cutting out pop, junk and eating after dinner. A little bit of exercise won't hurt either. Head aches from lack of caffeine are subsiding at this point. Actually felt pretty good today. Here we go!

TZ, sobering reminder we all need to keep better care of the machine that carts us around.
Good to hear your on the upswing, keep pluggin at it.

I can't be positive my wt gain is directly related to Warfarin or just my being anxious every time I feel a twinge in my leg which translated into my backing off on any real exercise. A day or two after the leg clot diagnosis, docs still aren't sure if the episodes I had were in fact 5 or 6 mini strokes or part of another issue.. One had me unable to move my arm, hand n fingers, second one saw my vision impacted.
Time to get back to living life larger.

the biggest problem I seem to have is that I treat myself to KFC or BurgerKing when I am feeling down. unfortunately, with the way work has been for me lately I have been treating myself A LOT. but the worst part is that the stress from work is making me drop weight despite how I have been eating. I either need to adjust my eating to start losing weight for the right reasons. or I need a new job. either way, i'm not in the best situation lol.

This hits home for me. You were extremely lucky. Lost my best friend to a heart attack, he was under 40.
I had not been into the doctors in ages, so I immediately went in for a check-up. Turns out my blood pressure was the high end of normal. Not alarming, but a couple of diet changes (watching my salt) and I brought it down to normal.

If anybody cycles or is interested in taking up road cycling, I'm always looking for people to ride with.

At my lightest ever I was 149 last year in the middle if summer. I'm 5'3". I quit smoking back when I bought my Stang August of last year as a promise to myself and the wife and kids that I'd quit when I bought myself a Mustang. Well here comes Xmas and on New Year's Eve I rang in at 170. I started my diet and the gym on the 13th of January, cut out all sugars and junk. I went online and found a bmr calculator that tells you how many calories your body burns based on your age, weight and height doing absolutely nothing. I then cut 1000 calories a day between food and exercise. Burn 7000 calories a week and you loose 2 pounds. I'm down to 153.6 as of yesterday (I could've been under 150 but went to Cuba and gained back 5 pounds 6 weeks ago. Lol) I feel good and I can see some muscle coming through.

I've struggled with same thing family, work , personal and SAD , I have found that exercise and positive results will trickle down to you wanting to eat healthier . 2-3 times a year I go into my cave and don't want to come out . I am really looking forward to this and maybe having the support will be a great motivation .

SVOMACH1, Find out what your bmr is and eat 500 calories less than that a day based on your daily physical activity and drink tons of water. You'll lose a pound a week. If you can manage to go to a gym and burn another 500 a day or burn 300 more and eat another 200 less then you're at a total deficit of 1000 a day and you'll lose 2 pounds per week. Trust me, you'll be under 230 by May 24 weekend. It's working for me.

Water is really important so drink 4 + bottles a day. And forget everything on the Nutrition labels and look only at the calories. Don't forget drinks have calories and lots of them so take that in account. If your target is 2000 calories a day and you drink 2 beers, a couple double doubles and a coke then you've pretty much killed half of your calories for the whole day in just liquid. It all counts.

How do you find out your bmr ( and what is it ha ha )?

Old Fart

Here's one site... http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

Sterlinghorsegt
03-20-2014, 10:03 AM
Google bmr calculator. There's a bunch of them. It tells you how many calories your body burns while at rest. For example, my body at rest burns 1650 calories a day, I work construction so I'm on my feet all day so I can eat 2200 calories a day to maintain my current weight. So I want to cut 1000 calories a day between eating less and exercising. After I'm at my goal weight, I go back to the calculator and find out what my new bmr is (because body has changed, so has bmr) and the I eat what it says without cutting anything and I'll be able to maintain my weight. I can then even eat a little extra to compensate for the calories I'm burning at the gym.

Harris Benedict Formula

To determine your total daily calorie needs, multiply your BMR (http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/) by the appropriate activity factor, as follows:

If you are sedentary (little or no exercise) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.2
If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.375
If you are moderatetely active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.55
If you are very active (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days a week) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.725
If you are extra active (very hard exercise/sports & physical job or 2x training) : Calorie-Calculation = BMR x 1.9

Total Calorie Needs Example
If you are sedentary, multiply your BMR (1745) by 1.2 = 2094. This is the total number of calories you need in order tomaintain your current weight.
Once you know the number of calories needed to maintain your weight, you can easily calculate the number of calories you need to eat in order to gain or lose weight:
- Calorie intake to gain weight (http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/calorie-intake-to-gain-weight.php)

At times it seems as if life is unfair, or that we're getting the short end of the stick. However, everything happens for a reason. We could be here discussing funeral costs.
Instead, we were given warning signs....Now it's up to us to see what we do with it.

And I'm IN.

Been waiting since early January for our new gym to open up, but there have been some construction delays and still gonna be a couple weeks by the sounds of things. Wife and I have been paid up since we registered there in December so I'm ready to go.

I've been pretty steady at 195lbs 6'0" in recent years but I do a lot of sitting in my everyday life and not much calorie-burning.

I try to eat healthy choices for the most part, but there are things that I can cut out somewhat (sugars, carbs, etc) and need to drink more water with more excercise.

My goal is to be in the 175-180 range by mid-summer.

Okay I'm all in but first a little history.

Lost my Dad when he was 56 to a heart attack. I was 17
Lost my Mom when she was 60 to a heart attack. I was 22
Lost my brother when he was 49 to a heart attack. I was 37

So in 2007 I was 41 and tipped the scale at 340 at a pint sized 6'4"
Decided it was time for change. I lost 85 lbs and was approaching my goal of 235 when I slipped. Not a lot at first, just a little here and there but it added up and here I am 7 years later at 330. I'm one year younger than my brother was when he signed off.

This thread is very timely because last Friday I promised myself, my wife and my 2 daughters I would reach a healthy weight and stay there!

Funny place to find this kind of support but I'll take it.
Thanks TMC

I'm in for this as well. I need to lose 20 pounds. I have been nervous to work out since I hurt my back last year but now I think it's an excuse. I just need to get back into it slowly. I used to love working out. I know one thing that will be hard for a lot of us in the summer is cutting out beer but is has to be done(with a couple here and there)! 2 years ago I got up to my current weight and then stopped drinking beer and eating chips during the week and cut back on the weekends. I lost 15 pounds in under 2 months. I need to follow my own rules again!!!

Look at it this way: If you eat at McDonalds 6 days a week, then eat nothing but salads and veggies at home on the 7th day.....you're gonna get fat.

Let me start by saying Arboc's diet is very effective and you lose about 5 lbs a week. Its through a Doctor and it monitored. Its very low calorie and restrictive. I personally cant handle eating 1000 calories a day. I become moody and I snap at people all day. I lose my patience instantly. I did lose almost 30 lbs in 6 weeks

Keep in mind this is a slower cutting diet.

I have been at me diet and exercise regiment for 3 weeks . I am 6'3 and I started at 262 lbs. My BMI (which for the most part is BS to me) is 185lbs. I am working out in the gym 4 days a week, 1.5 hours a day. My rules of thumb are no sugar, don't care about salt (until later), clean natural carbs (sweet potatoe, brown whole grain rice and instant is fine), real chicken, real steak (fat removed), fish, Green vegetables only with one exception. No corn, carrots, or green peas as they contain natural sugar. The most important rule of all is nothing processed. If it goes though any type of machine or treatment, do not eat it. I eat real oat meal with some sort of fruit ( 1/2 cup) for breakfast. The remainder means consist of a small fist full of brown rice and a fist sized chicken breast (or equivalent meat), green veggie, 3 times a day. in between meals I have 2 protein shakes that have 170 calories. total calories ingested are about 2400.

My workouts burn range in calories burned from 300-600. I average them out at 450ish. This put me at approximately 500 calorie deficit a day or 3500 calories a week which is one pound. I generally lose about 2 lbs a week due to extra cardio

Cheat days are better off eliminated or saved until you do a night out. You feed your body sugar and your pleasure center in you brains starts telling the body "more of that please". If you eliminate it, you body will stop craving those things.

My goal is around 200 lbs and under 15% body fat. I may not be able to hit this but its a goal. I am at 257 lbs currently. Honestly with working out muscle weighs more than fat. I go by body % of fat instead of weight. I started at 34% body fat. This means i have to lose about 20% body fat or 53 lbs.

Guys remember these are not diets, there lifestyles. You must adopt your eating and exercise habits for the rest of your life. As soon as your stray too far the weight will come back. This doesn mean you cant go out with with boys to wing night. What it means is that you have to limit how many nights a week you abuse your diet. No one way is right for everyone.

03-20-2014, 10:33 PM
In the past 5 years I've fluctuated from as low as 163 to as high as 230. I've bounced around and tried alot of things. Right now I'm at 195. I was at 175 last October when I quit smoking. Gained a shitload and now I have to lose it again in the next 6 weeks before a trip to Cuba. Hopefully this thread will motivate all of us. If I could share any advice on this subject it would be : drink lots of water...force yourself. If you think you've had enough water, have another glass. Cheat every once in a while, but jump back into your diet. If you slip and lose track, pick it back up as soon as you can. The longer your off the wagon, the harder it is to get back up. Hold your self accountable. The best thing I've found is the app "fitness pal". you enter your target weight and current weight, and it tells you your target calorie intake. Then you enter what you eat every day. You'd be surprised how much less you eat when you see a running tab daily.... and lastly, set your goals small (ex. 2lbs by Friday) if you have an unrealistic short term goal, you'll likely get frustrated and give up.... baby steps. Just remember, time flies. week by week, lbs by lbs... you'll be down 20-30lbs in no time. good luck to all. Lets do it!

lean protein guys. Cut the carbs and sugar.

I eat oatmeal every morning (real stuff not the prepackaged full of sugar ones) with a bit of protein on top. If i have time i make an egg white and spinach omlette.

Lunch is usually some almonds and a sandwich (nothing crazy)

I eat normal dinners for the most part but avoid fatty meats. Fish 2-3 times a week, lots of chicken, some beef as well. Dont fry everything dont put a ton of cheese on stuff.

And most importantly get off your asses and work out!

Stop drinking double doubles, pop or juice!

Being diabetic, levelling off your sugar levels is good for both you and your families health. As you know, levels either high or low can take you to places you'd normally never go. In Kath's case, pump made all the difference in the world. She feels better, looks better and it's just plain made her a happier person.
Can't start looking after yourself a moment too soon. Do realize we all need to do it on our own terms.

I'm not too bad at 185 and 5'8" but dropping a few pounds produces a noticeable difference in things like just bending to tie your shoes so I know there is a fair amount that needs to go. I think I'll shoot for a goal of 165-170 or so but change the mass to more lean muscle.
Keep in mind that your weight may fluctuate 2-3 pounds over the day, so weigh yourself at the same time each day such as the morning when you first get up (and after you pee, naturally, to drop a couple more ounces) and use the week as your measuring tool and not the day cause shit happens or not.

So Monday I'll start altering the diet and add in some exercise.

I started with a trainer in October. I am now seing him 3-times a week, and in a good week I do an additional 2 days of cardio.
When I started we concentrated on mobility excercises. I could not even reach straight up over my head, nor could I twsit my torso around. And I was weak.
Now, I can reach up high, twist around sideways, and I've grown. We are now doing intense resistance training.
LAst time I was measured at the doc I was 5'9 1/2", having shrunk an inch. This past Monday I was 5' 11 1/4" on the same scale.
My posture has improved and my stride has changed to what it was 10 years ago.
My blood pressure is completely normal.
My PSA has dropped from a high of 4.6 to 2.9
My diabetes is getting better.

Oh. By the way, I'm 63 years old. I was never in my life into excercise or sports. Now I'm realizing I only have so many years left, and I don't want to wind up in a walker with an oxygen tank as companion

Unfortunately, my weight is static around 255. I cannot seem to discipline myself to lse weight. I need to get down to around 215.
This thread may help motivate me.

158lbs @ 6'0 here. Been like this since just after high school.

I made it up to 174 with Whey Protein but no exercise/weights/training.

Actually really pleased with the results even though I was taking it for other reasons.

220lbs @ 5'11"

Been slowly creeping up in weight. Spend 8 hours a day at my desk, find myself unmotivated after I get home. Looking to get out and start cycling this year, at least an hour a day, just something, anything I guess. I visit my doctor every 4 months, get full blood work done as I am what they call "high risk". My father had high blood pressure, my mother has diabetes, and I take medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol. I have a good doctor and I think that makes a big difference, he works with me not against me. My blood pressure and cholesterol are in perfect range, yes I take medication but as my doctor says it's better to maintain a healthy level than it is to bring down an unhealthy level. Hoping to shed some pounds this year and get more physically fit.

To anyone who doesn't make regular trips to see there family doctor, I highly recommend you do.

Focus more on vegetables. They fill the hunger gap without the fat/calories.

carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumber, green pepper....you'd be surprised how much extra you can shed in a week just by filling a large margarine container every day with these items and munching on them throughout the day. Heck, even fill a small container with some sort of dip to make 'em more tasty. ie: ranch dressing

Big thing to remember, set realisitic goals, otherwise you fall off the wagon if you don't reach them. Start small, like 10lbs in 14 days kind of thing and just keep resetting your goals. its like running....i just wanna get to the top of the street. done. now i want to get out of the block. done. other side of town. done....etc. make your goals achievable and keep looking where you want to go.

good luck my friends. don't be afraid to tell us whats going on. good support base in here.

5'10'' about 190-195lbs. Want to get back down in to the 170 range. Trying to cut back on eating out junk as its my biggest problem, both for weight and spending unneeded money. Its nothing for me to go out 3-4 times a week and have a burger, mexican, schwarma, etc.

Want to start eating healthier and just lose the gut, used to work out 4-5 times a week but once I got out of university and in to an office setting I basically fell off hard.

Plan is to try and replace the burger and fries with a cold cut sub or left overs, cut out the cola for water or juice, and start hitting the treadmill and bike more.

I know its not a huge drop or anything, but I'm really tired of what I let myself become.

the biggest problem I seem to have is that I treat myself to KFC or BurgerKing when I am feeling down. unfortunately, with the way work has been for me lately I have been treating myself A LOT. but the worst part is that the stress from work is making me drop weight despite how I have been eating. I either need to adjust my eating to start losing weight for the right reasons. or I need a new job. either way, i'm not in the best situation lol.

This describes what I do a lot. Rough day and feeling down, go to lunch at Taco Bell. Stressed out, go to KFC.

For those of you looking to loose some serious weight, couple things to consider.

Don't just jump on a treadmill or bike. If you do cardio every day without building muscle, eventually it's going to get to the point where you will stop loosing weight as it'll get harder for your body to do. Not saying don't do cardio but also include some weight training.

You need to build muscle as well. The more muscle you build, the better your metabolism will get and the weight will drop and continue to drop.

Drink lot's of water, a gallon a day is good. Also the more water you drink, the more full you will feel so you will eat less.

Eat more frequently in day, 5-6 meals a day but smaller portions.

Hope this is helpful for anybody looking for some tips.

Oh and why isn't GhostRider in this thread??? Can somebody that lives closer to him please kick his ass and get him in here?

Gunna have to go to GNC and get me some protein again, start working out. Gotta stop being lazy and use what little time I have before 9pm to hit the gym.

Jibb the key to gaining weight isn't going to your local nutrition store and buying protein powder. You need to eat more. A lot more. I can tell you from experience.

5 years ago I weighed 165lbs @ 5'11"... Started going to the gym and weight training. Did a lot of research. Still learning to this day. Today I weigh 215lbs @ 5'11'' tall. The reason I was able to gain that much isn't from just lifting weights and gulping back a post workout protein shake. I had to eat and eat and eat! Sometimes forcing myself to eat. It's no longer eating for pleasure but it's eating for purpose.

Just ask Dave next time you talk to him as he's seen my progress and knows what I looked like then and now.

Get the pasta and rice into ya! As for protein, lot's of chicken, pork, fish, beef.
