Are upgrading the rear brakes on a GT to Cobra spec as easy as ordering Cobra Calipers, Caliper Brackets, Cobra Brake Lines, and Cobra Rotors? Or is there more that needs to be changed like the axle mounting flange and what not.

I want to put

Significant gains with the Cobra fronts. Rears are nice but honestly, hard to tell the difference in braking power vs the stock GT stuff. Biggest advantage, Cobra rears use a vented rotor so they tend to run cooler longer.
Huge bang for the buck with bolt on Cobra fronts.
Nice visual upgrade bolting on the Cobra rears.

Not sure who still sells it, at one time there was a rear upgrade option that utilized a larger solid rotor and caliper bracket, stuff was a bolt on.
Might have been Baer, also might look at North Race Cars or Full Tilt Boogie.

Rick,

Would I be better off just doing Cobra Front swap and then toss a quality set of Stoptechs vented rotors in stock GT size on the rear? I mean visually I wanted the larger diameter rotor outback as well, but if its going to be a giant pain in the ass to swap more than just brackets I may bag it.

Cost is surprisingly similar in either route.

^^ that's the route I went and love the upgrade. SS lines and good pads.

Cobra size fronts/stock sizerears 99Chrome?

Yes... Stock rear calipers with slotted rotors & Mach 1 fronts. I need to use spacers on the fronts for the Billet Specialties 15" drag setup.

Do you have pics from the side of that setup with your 18s on?

Stock size rotors will only come in solid, too thin for vented. Cobra and GT pads are almost identical, cobra ones are just thinner to accommodate the thicker vented rotor. If it was mine, upgrade the front to Cobra, set of SS line all round, decent matching pads n rotors for the stock rears and done.

Yea looking in to that as well. But seems like somehow it costs more....

Keep in mind, some of the pads that come in "kits" are anything but premium.
If they were OEM Ford, PBR pads that came in em are a terrific street pad.

LMR sells them with a Stoptech Semi Mettalic.

I did the M2300M Cobra kit on the back of my 2003. It came with everything except the pads and calipers. Easy kit to put in, the only part that was a bit of a pain was removing the axles to get the old brackets off and to get the new ones on.

If you like i have pictures from the install and i can do a write up for you if you like.

rear calipers are the same in either scenario I believe - iron Varga single pistons. The 11.65" rotor offers app 10% more torque than the GT rotor setup, according to MM.

I would do it if its gonna be all the same $ other than the bracket. No such thing as too much brakes. I would go with EBC red pads front and rear, slotted and drilled rotors if its only going to see street use.

Have a look at this:

Sorry bout dat.

-front brakes, direct bolt on with no mods

-rear requires Cobra caliper flange brackets.

* * * 94-04 GT/V6 Upgrading to Cobra Vented Rotor* * *
Using these to upgrade your GT/V6 Application to the larger diameter, vented Cobra Rotor, a factory cobra caliper bracket must be used. This bracket bolts to the axle housing and is what holds the caliper in its correct position over the rotor.

Well that pick makes me not wanna change parts.

Rick, when they say bracket they mean just the bracket from caliper to axle flange, or they call the flange the bracket too.

ZR
04-01-2015, 03:22 PM
Yes, bracket that bolts on the axle flange.

Lol, very informative thread.

I had GT rears on my Green Bullitt for drag wheel clearance, before I sold it I put the Cobra brake rotors back on and the difference was instant, much better feeling pedal, plus the bigger rotor obviously looks better.
I had the old rotors for the rear still, just the GT ones, they were slotted and drilled, not sure what kind but you're welcome to them if they're still in the stockroom at Protech. Here my f/s thread http://www.gtamc.com/showthread.php?110987-Bunch-of-parts-79-04-performance-and-stock&highlight=
The avi pic looks awesome btw.
