I'm not sure which section to post in but I'm currently trying to change the spark plugs on my 1997 ford escort that I picked up for a daily driver. They are really tough to get out and I don't want to break them. Is there something I should be doing before trying to remove them? Any help would be appreciated.

If tight I'd use the 3v plug removal technique. Crack them 1/8 turn then put a little deep creep on each one. Let it work for a while and repeat until they come out.

On top of the above, run a can of Seafoam through a tank of gas before you attempt the removal.

^That won't help on an Escort, likely it has a Mazda-designed engine, so no spark plug stupidity like so many Fords. Just do the first thing suggested, work in and out with some penetrant and you'll be fine.

^Escorts were built on the Mazda "B" platform but used Ford motors. The 1997 2 liters were slightly bored out versions of the 1.9s found in earlier generations.

I've got a couple brand new gasket sets for that thing sitting around here.
You can have them - free - pm me.
