So I just got these in and they really freaking stick out. Offset is 25mm.

Is this normal?

Rims are 17x9 03 cobras

Offset sounds right for that car, are there maybe spacers behind the wheel you're forgetting about? Maybe they sent you the wrong offset? You can measure the backspacing yourself, take a straightedge and lay it across the back rim face, measure the distance to the hub flange, should be around 6".

Its the new stances out look, you need to stretch a 195 tire on that 9" rim and lower the car to scraping then you'll get all the respect at ertefa meets lol

Not sure about Latemodel but AM was very good when I had a bent wheel from them, I shipped it to them at their expense, they sent me a new one totally free of charge. Did you order the wrong wheels, or did they screw up?

How to Measure Wheel BackSpaceThe easiest way to measure backspace is to lay the wheel face down onto the ground so the backside of the wheel is facing up. Take a straight edge and lay it diagonally across the inboard flange of the wheel. Take a tape measure and measure the distance from where the straight edge contacts the inboard flange to the hub mounting pad of the wheel. This measurement is backspace. The photo below shows three wheels with 2",3", & 4" backspace.
Items required to measure wheel backspace:

Tape measure

Straight edge

Wheel w/o tire (preferred)

Measure and post Backspacing and I can tell you whats up.
As Dave said, suspension hanging like that may be making it look worse.

Thanks rick that explains it very well. I am going to measure it tomorrow then head over to your place. According to the website specs the backspacing should be 5.95 inches

the dish has nothing to do with it...you could have a huge dish with the proper backspacing that will still fit...

for example:

9" dished wheel for the front

10.5" dished wheel for the rear

If it's their info that's wrong I'm sure they'll do something to make it right, usually big online companies have good customer service, hopefully you get some kind of restitution. I'd be down to buy a pair for the rear of my '97, then maybe find some stockers for the front...

Im so confused. What other year would they be for that needs less offset. All the newer stuff has more offset.

Just put tires on the car and drop it on the ground

Harbinger
04-25-2015, 10:05 AM
Probably looks odd because a tire wasn't on it. I'm dropping by ricks today to compare it with a stock cobra rim. I'll also mount a tire to check it out. Problem is all 4 rims are deep dish style. They never put it on the title just the mini info for the rim on latemodelrestoration.com which kinda mislead me

Is this the set you bought? http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/item/WK-10267953D/03-Cobra-Wheel-Kit-Machined-17x9-94-04
If so, I see no reason they should not fit unless they were made wrong or boxed wrong. This sounds to me like its 100% their problem, the set says it will work on your car and it doesn't, plain and simple, don't blame yourself.
I really doubt mounting a tire and dropping the car will change the way it fits much, I mean it will drop in a little but it's not just out at the top due to increased camber from having the suspension hanging......
Also, make sure you check all 4 wheels, in case they aren't all the same.

Never seen ones like that. I don't think that fraction of an inch is causing your problem, but I find it intersting that that doesn't allow much contact area between the hub and the rim. According to MM, the wheel is held on to the car by the friction and clamping force of the wheel studs and the hub.

This isn't latemodels fault but the should come good for it. Poor manufacting QC ... Skipped a step.

Ponyryd
04-25-2015, 10:34 PM
I highly doubt that's the problem, but possible I suppose. It looks to me like it should have been machined well beyond that little lip, like down to the next level so there's a full ring of contact all around. If they don't do anything I'd say you're perfectly safe grinding that little lip off yourself if you're sure it's the problem.

Well I just read the entire thread. All I can say is that should be flat but it is still not enough to make it stick out that far. That looks roughly about 3-5mm? But your wheel is sticking out 1 inch plus.

I believe I have a negative camber in the front do you think that may be the cause of making it sick out that much?

Just to clarify: I didn't pay attention and realized all the rims were deep dish (this was my fault.). Further more, they seemed to have stuck out too much but it could have been because the tire was not mounted or the camber. Last, the back of the hub needs to be machined evenly, that is the biggest reason why I want a full refund.

Other wise the rims look wicked.

I'll keep everyone posted on my interaction with latemodelrestoration.

Ponyryd
04-26-2015, 10:23 AM
If it was just due to the camber it would be sticking out at the top only, this sticks out everywhere. Would be pretty easy to do a test fit with a jack under the lower control arm....that would put the wheel about where it would be with a tire on and sitting on the ground. It is tough to tell with the suspension hanging and no tire, and maybe my eyes are fooling me, but it looks very wrong.
Deep dish or not the should not stick out like that, you can run deep dish on all 4 corners and have the wheels fit perfect. Actually I'm quite sure Rick had DD all around on his cobra before.

SteveEH
04-26-2015, 12:18 PM
From the looks of it, when you put the tire on, and get it mounted and everything, the rim/tire wouldn't stick out that much, I think that those "few mm" could be the cause, even if they are minimal, they can change the whole rim/tire look. Hopefully you get a refund and shipping charges paid for. I know I was told to go through DaSilvas for anything from LateModelRestoration, I was told they will make it right, even if it's a few more dollars.

If your still in doubt, jack the car up under the lower control arm and try the rim on. Measurements say it'll fit just fine, even better if you have that c hair machined off the mounting face.

I might do that l. I did mention a few of the Toronto club members thought the raised portion of the back hub was odd. Sent them an email with pictures of what I was talking about including the one of my wheel sticking out. Hopefully I can get a refund. I still think the entire back part of the wheel Hub should be evenly machined. It poses a structural strain on the wheel itself.

Well, I see 5-10 sets of wheels a day at work, they very, very rarely make contact all the way around, especially steel wheels, if you look at the imprint on a rotor or drum after you take the wheel off you'll see what I mean. They are designed like that, and for a reason I'm sure, I don't have a factory Ford wheel to look at right now but I bet they aren't machined totally around, there is always a void or two here and there.
Don't get me wrong, mom not saying it's right, just saying it's somewhat normal.

I am getting ready to order a set for our vert ...I'm interested in what happened to that "look". For the record though my factory 2000cobra Rs do stick out a bit on my sn95

Cobra R wheels are 9.5" which puts em just that much closer to the outter fender edges.

I have Cobra R's for my car now, with 235's up front and 255's out back they fit inside the wheel wells. By a finger up front, little more out back.

this is my point exactly...that is way too small of a tire for that rim...of course this is just my opinion but...

I run 275's on my 9.5" wheels, granted they are slicks so they are actually wider than a regular 275 street tire...so for a street tire I would have no problem going with a 285 on there...

there was '93, '95, & 2000

are you sure you don't have a 5 bolt?

the OEM 2000 Cobra R wheel was the only one that came in a 9.5"

I have no idea. I cannot imagine they ever made a factory 17" Cobra R wheel in 4 lug. I attached a couple pics, maybe that will help. I figured out the issue between b1lk1 and GR.

b1lk1 only stated he had Cobra R replica wheels. GR assumed they were 9.5 in based on the original Cobra R wheels.

Most Cobra R replica wheels come in 8 and 9 inch wide applications for 4 lug. 235s can fit on a 9 inch just fine. It's a tiny bit stretched but not VW brooooo stretched.

That being said mine are 9 inch all the way around and 255s are perfect fit.

not that it really matters but...plus he said they were OEM at the start before we figured they were reps

anyways, doesn't matter...I still say it needs wider LOL even if was only an 8...

now that being said...you need bigger tires too...lol

275 is about perfect for most street tires on a 9" rim, that's what the cobra came with from the factory and you know Ford isn't going to put anything big on...heaven for bid!!

Lol why not right ? Nah I'd feel so bad doing that to latemodel. They were more than helpful.

I'm taking the rims to tiremag off of keele. Gonna have them machine that crap off and then slap those babies on my STANG after Rick makes her good as new (new clutch, clutch cable, and oil pan). Steve from tiremag looked at the rim and said "why did they do that ?" pointing out the raised portions of the hub surface.

It was interesting to see some of you saying it should be fine but others taking note that it looks to be off. I think the majority vote is that the rims were a bad batch, poorly made etc. Latemodel even removed those rims from their website. I really hope they didn't have alot of those rims laying around as it would suck BALLS to have to return it all to the original manufacturer.

I think what Intmdtr is saying is that the OEM backspacing has wheels sit too deep in the wheel well. A lot of guys will run spacers or will go with wider ones (I run 10.5" out back). If you do not machine the ones for the rear, they may look better.

There is nothing wrong with your rims, I have this exact same set of rims from late model except I had the centers painted Black. Mine also have the lip on the inside hub, I used them last year for two months and about one month this year, I check the torque often and they stay tight with no issues at all. I am running 315/35/17 and they sit flush with the rear fenders. I will try to get a picture from the top too show how the rims sits to the fender.

I'd remove it completely, I think they are garish and I only barely like the Cobra style wing at best. I'd rather see 4 rubber plugs where the holes are than a wing, but I realize I am a very small part of the population that feels this way.

You got me too. I'd rather have plugs and be wingless. You can always put it back on without having to mutilate the lid

maybe stainless carriage bolts would look ok to fill the holes?

I have seen people use push pins (Christmas tree clips) and elevator bolts to fill the holes. Also seen electrical tape and aluminum foil tape cut to circles and put over the holes as well.

Might be hard to find but you could attempt to find a spoilerless trunk lid? Not sure how hard those are to find for the 99-04's.

Got the holes filled with plastic plugs from lowes (great customer service btw). The Homedepot around dufferin and steeles, had horrific costumer service...Nobody knew anything except for one asian employee, but even he had a bit of an attitude problem at first.

My FR500's that I got from American Muscle are similar, but not as raised as yours. They are maybe close to 1/16 raised off of the face. Never ever had an issue. I see that you had the issue fixed, just wanted to add to what I found tonight when I took my wheels off to detail them.

The spoilerless look is a nice clean look. When I got my GT back in '03, it was one of those mods I did that summer. Used some plugs to cover the holes, then over the winter had the decklid professionally filled, and repainted. Never looked back since.

A guy at work just got some new wheels that have the same thing, not as pronounced, but there is a definite raised portion. I'm also fairly certain my saleen reps were the same, I'm sure it's just how they do them for some reason, and yours were just really bad.
