View Full Version : Worthwhile gains going to Long Tube and swapping intake?

Current set up:
Stock 93 bottom end. SVO Heads, Possibly E cam, non ported Cobra intake, Vortech with power pipe making 8lbs of boost.
Exhaust is currently MAC shorty unequal headers with Magnaflow Catted X pipe (4 cats total) with MAC Cat back.
Set up made 385rwhp and 406tq on Misener's dyno just over a year ago.
My thouhgts are to make a little more jam by making the motor more efficient rather than upping the boost.
Thought about starting with something like 1 5/8" BBK long tubes with a high flow catted X or H pipe (2 cats total). Would I be out to lunch thinking ill gain 10-15rwhp and hopefully not lose much tq? Next on the list would be the intake, either getting the lower ported on the cobra, or swapping to something like an Edelbrock Performer or TF Street heat. I think that would be worth another 10-15 as well.

Thoughts?

any restriction on air going in or exhaust coming out hurts performance

heads...cam...intake always helps...

as far as the hp numbers goes is purely speculating without a dyno

I would consider intercooling and/or water meth

then upping the boost

my car was a different animal when I got the water meth on it

Exhaust swap may get you 10-15, intake I'd say 5-10 since the cobra flows pretty well already. It's really tough to speculate though, the only way to know for sure is to do it and see. FYI though, long tubes are a pain to install and make the car a pain to work on....they also hang lower and it looks like you have a good drop so that ,as be another issue.

Thanks for the info guys! I might still do long tubes with a catted H pipe then maybe up the boost a little and re tune. Probably just leave the intake as it.

by your sig...looks like the car is flirting with 11s

with a few changes 11s shud be no problemo

With practice it'll get there for sure. I only went once this year and first time ever using a tire that actually hooks! I am sure as it sits I have an 11.7 to 11.9 in it!

Im currently running similar set up as yours..tfs heads gt 40 tubular stock bottom end with long tubes at 7psi im making 406 at wheels...looking for 10 pounds boost any suggestions what pulley to swap too? And 12.1 is not bad ...i ran 13.1 at 114 with a street tire leaving off idle lol

Not sure what pulley to go to, but if you figure it out let me know lol. With a sticky tire you'll shave off a second at least. I was in your situation and dropped a second going to a 15" ET Street radial.

A buddy at work is getting 10 pounds boost from 2.95 charger pulley and 6.87 crank pulley....so might try that...he is running similar setup but ford crate motor and meth kit also ,putting down 495 to the wheels.I will try sticky tire when i retune just worried about breaking stock axles...etc

That power level and a sticky tire will break stock axles in no time, but really only if you're launching hard, off idle launches make for slow times but probably will keep the axles in one piece.

Cheaper to upgrade before busting one. We have however all heard of the guy that gets away with it for years (stock axles + sticky tires) but for that one guy, several that either took out the entire rear end or even worse, crashed.

^I could clearly see how twisted the splines were on the axles from my '01 Bullitt, it ran high 11s with 5k launches though, lol.....I'd bet one more run and it woulda broke one or both.
