Amazing stuff

The Monday night launch and rocket landing – December 21, 2015 – helps further the goal of bringing down the cost of space travel. It was the Falcon 9’s first launch in six months following a launch failure last June, and the first-ever upright landing of a rocket used to deploy satellites to space.

The upgraded 23-story-tall Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 8:29 p.m ET (0029 UTC on December 22). The Falcon 9’s second stage and payload separated from the first stage a little more than two minutes later, at an altitude of about 60 miles (100 km).

While the second stage fired its engine and headed to space, the first stage also relit its engines for the return to Earth.

The engine burn slowed the rocket’s descent from supersonic speed, as the main stage of the Falcon 9 returned to a landing site about six miles (10 km) from the launch pad.

The company's first two launch vehicles are the Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 rockets (a nod to Star Wars' Millennium Falcon)

I never heard of this guy until recently, but the more I read about him, the more fascinating it is.

Elon Musk (born June 28, 1971) is a South African-born Canadian-American business magnate, engineer, inventor and investor. He is the CEO and CTO of SpaceX, CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors, and chairman of SolarCity as well as co-chairman of OpenAI. He is the founder of SpaceX and a co-founder of Zip2, PayPal, and Tesla Motors.

SpaceX has successfully test-fired the new Raptor rocket engine that will launch the company's planned interplanetary spaceship, according to a series of tweets from the company's CEO, Elon Musk. The engine is being developed to help propel a powerful reusable rocket to Mars and beyond as part of SpaceX's Interplanetary Transport System.
New engine uses liquid methane.
Exciting time to be a rocket scientist.

You recently heard about him? Came to fame with Paypal. He also proposed building "tubes" that would transport people between cities like those that you shot documents through between floors inside buildings (before email).

Bringing this back because SpaceX just re-launched a recovered Falcon-9 rocket yesterday.

http://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/spacex-launches-its-first-recycled-rocket-in-historic-leap-1.3348301

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket recovered at sea from its maiden flight last year blasted off again from Florida on Thursday in the first successful launch of a recycled orbital-class booster, then capped the feat with another return landing on an ocean platform.

At it again: he's now expected to launch his car into space.

When Falcon Heavy lifts off in 2018, it will be the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)---a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel--Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost. Falcon Heavy draws upon the proven heritage and reliability of Falcon 9.

Its first stage is composed of three Falcon 9 nine-engine cores whose 27 Merlin engines together generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft. Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit. Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars.

What a time to be alive. :D
The guy sold $10 million worth of flamethrowers in 48 hrs.
That's quite brilliant.
I cant wait for the youtube videos :D

Apparently, some customs agencies are saying they won’t allow shipment of anything called a “Flamethrower”. To solve this, we are renaming it “Not a Flamethrower”.
Or maybe “Temperature Enhancement Device”

Elon Musk’s fire sale of his Boring Company “flamethrowers” raised $10m, selling out all 20,000 units, despite warnings from the Home Office and US politicians.

Not bad for a test launch.

Was wondering the same thing.
Watched it live and when the signal was lost from the ship (a normal occurrence) they never went back to talk about it. Thought then is that it failed.

It looks like it failed!

So a rocket full of solid rocket fuel exploded into millions of peices in the ocean?

Is they’re any talk of the environment impact of this? Or are we all just ignoring it because Tesla.

By no means was I trying to underscore the importance of this accomplishment, he did what NASA can do for 1/11 of the price and in relatively short time. Once he irons this out Elon Musk owns Mars.

So a rocket full of solid rocket fuel exploded into millions of peices in the ocean?

The Falcon 9 uses liquid propellant (liquid oxygen and kerosene) in it's Merlin engines. It uses all it's fuel during the re-entry and landing maneuver. It likely only had a 100 lbs of fuel in reserve when it crashed.

5.4MarkVIII
02-07-2018, 05:46 PM
Oh that’s even better. Becasie of course he said it crashed becasie one of the engines failed to relight.

Which would indicate that there was in fact more kerosene on board didn’t get used

So yeah. We are just ignoring the environmental impact becasie Tesla?

That’s exactly my point I’m being taxed extra for the sake of the environment I’ve been lectured by people for my big truck and past non fuel efficient cars and these exact same people praise Musk as some god of the eco friendly while the guy puts moremshit in the air than everyone on this forum combined will in their life time.

If I have my boat out and knowingly take it out with an oil leak I can be charged huge. Hell if I get caught refilling from a jerry can on the water I can be fined huge

People are freaking out about pipelines becasie of the risk of an oil leak. People boycot oil companies becasie of oil leaks and this guys crashing rockets full of fuel into the ocean and no one gives a rats ass.

I’m just cracking jokes at the hypocrisy of it all.

I agree a bit with the hypocrisy of all the Tesla fans loving the space launch. The amount of fuel burned each rocket launch is insane. I'm not saying it's not worth it, but it seems to be a forgotten point.

On a different point, does anyone know where the Tesla is actually mounted on the vehicle? I was under the impression the Tesla was buried inside, but the video/pictures show it out in the open. There is no way it went through the atmosphere unshielded, so what's the deal?

I believe it was in the big round point at the top of the centre rocket. Once in orbit the shield peeled away to expose the car.

Yes the pictures show it fully encapsulated, so the shielding must've peeled off like Mellow Yellow said. I'm surprised there aren't more videos of that floating around though.

What's interesting is that the rocket landing target is in the ocean. If all systems are go, it changes direction at the last minute and lands on solid ground. If something goes wrong (like this time) it continues into the ocean.

im sure the math involved in mind numbing. getting to space is about having just enough fuel to get your weight to space. the more weight the more fuel, the more fuel the more weight, its like a looping paradox.

i can imagine that just a one or two minor inefficacy's on launch and it would seal the deal on posable landing.
