This looks great for a Maverick! Never imagined that I would say this but I say yes.

Personally I've always liked them, once the stance and wheels are right they look killer.
That's a beautiful ride. Perfect colour for that year of car.
Sung Kang just assisted with a Maverick build for this years SEMA called Underdog. Tim Weir use to have one. I wish he kept it. Its powered by a 2.3L ecoboost engine. Badass.

That is a cool build indeed.
The brown one needs new wheels (yuck!) and there are several major fails on that white car. WTF is up with the mirrors? lol
There's a dude who drives the wheels off his blue road race oriented 347 powered Maverick during Mustangs at Mosport. Original owner, real nice dude. Have a pic somewhere....
I think the Hot Wheels look amazing on the golden Maverick! Really suites that generation of car, imo.
From the choice of wheels, the flares, and the mirrors, I'd say that the inspiration was from the modded Japanese cars of the same era as the Maverick.
Example, an early Nissan Skyline:

^Im with Don on this one, the wheels on the Gold one look great, not a fan of the white ones wheels.
